I've just recently returned to the SETI@home group and so have V.8 of the BOINC software installed.

However, I have just realised that it seems to be taking full control of my PC!

I've just returned from being away for a few minutes and found that the computer appears to have been reset! It was only running the BOINC software - the other tasks I had left, including email, internet and iTunes, were closed.

This is a pain, as it means having to restart and return, especially to web pages, that I had been using/searching for. But I can't find anywhere to stop BOINC doing this.

Or am I just seeking someone else to blame and, indeed, the PC had actually reset?

But it means that background tasks, like TeamViewer, are also closed so that I don't have remote access to my PC.

Someone please explain before I withdraw from the project, again!

I've just recently returned to the SETI@home group and so have V.8 of the BOINC software installed.

The version numbering of both Seti and BOINC have nothing to do with each other. Project science applications have their own version numbering separate from BOINC.
BOINC is at present at version 7.6.33 maximum - but it's still a development version.
Seti Multibeam is at version 8.
Seti Astropulse is at version 7.

Or am I just seeking someone else to blame and, indeed, the PC had actually reset?

Seti will heat up the hardware a lot when it's running at full blast. Both CPU and GPU will be under a constant load.
This means that you need to take good care of the hardware, clean it regularly from dust bunies building up on the inside, and making sure that fans are still working, that there are enough of them and that heat is dissipated from your machine in a well maintained fashion.

Running work on the GPU will go faster, but at the cost of a lot of extra heat. When your system lacks the necessary case fans to remove this extra heat and get cooler air in, the result is that the machine overheats and can reset itself.

By default BOINC will run work on the GPU only when the system is idle. It will run work on the CPU at all times.
You can change those settings in the preferences, but in the end it won't change the fact that your machine will reset when it heats up again.

That can be solved by cleaning out the dust, adding more fans, adding water cooling, limiting the amount of CPU cores that can do work simultaneously with the GPU, not run work on the CPU at all or not run work on the GPU at all, etc. Or by not running Seti, that's of course the easiest and most cost efficient option.

Thanks, Jord, but it's not a heat issue. I left the computer for 10 minutes to have breakfast and, when I returned, all the previously running tasks had been shut down and only SETI was running!

I have a somewhat similar rig, ID: 7799625 , quad core/Islands GPU card, it was somewhat hard to get right. First I used the "Computer Preference's" tool under the "Options" part on the BOINC Manager and only let it run 95% to keep it from going over the temp that kicked it off. I then noticed that I didn't have enough power going to it so I put a 500 watt power supply in it and re-adjusted the percentage until I got it to where it wouldn't reset. I also installed the AMD APP that was right for it-not sure if that influenced it or not. Cooling seems harder to control when the power is not high enough (enough for everything) on the quad core. Cooling wise I run it 98% on all 4 cores and the temp varies about a degree where as it was fluctuating 9 to 11 degrees and resetting about every ten minutes from lack of wattage. Might be something to consider.
