Your suggestions are totally doable, the problem is with development time to write code to do all that, debug and test. Perhaps if they could get a student in website design to help out, they could help the project by coding a new site and they could use their work in a portfolio to build their resume.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
I kinda thought the technology was up to the task.
There MUST be classes at Berkeley on website design of some sort..................

Many companies now have a "mobile app" to complement their main website.

If there is time to redo this "main" site, why not have a "mobile app" to complement it?

Not a gripe, but an issue perhaps caused by the rollout of the new web page schema.

When down for weekly maintenance, the Account page (home.php) no longer gives a "down for maintenance" message, but rather attempts to connect to the database servers and splatters errors due to the db being off line. Looks like the "is it down?" check got lost ...

I couldn't see to find other threads where issues with the recent changes to web pages were noted, so hopefully posting it here will get it to the right place without raising the ire of He-who-must-not-be-annoyed.

Try adjusting your font size. I had it even worse in Dolphin on my phone, with everything in a single one word column. I still have that when everyone is quoting everyone else. But the original problem was easily fixed, by changing my font size down from the 140% it was at to 125%. The forum index now fills out without me having to resize the window, posts now show lines of 5 or 6 words, in portrait mode. I also stopped using 'auto-fit pages', which seems to stop the site from trying to load outside the boundaries of the screen. It gets even better when I set text-size to 90 or 100% as well.

qbit wrote:
No real mobile mode, no option to post videos, not even automatic link recognition
The CSS recognizes if a mobile device is being used, versus a non-mobile device and fills out the screen in such a way that you don't have to zoom in or out to be able to read things on the different devices. The old forums required that the user constantly pinch every thread he loaded, to be able to go from minute text to legible text. Do know that the CSS does not recognize you using a larger font size and are effectively overriding its settings.

The forums never had an option to post videos, other than using the BBCode tags to point to things externally. I'm glad we can't post videos, as I personally hate it that I am loading a page and out of the blue someone talks to me LOUDLY, and I have to quickly scroll through the whole page to find the offender and shuts its mouth. Especially with the new HTML5 videos that have autoplay standard on, this is quite irritating. The forums never had the automatic link recognition either, but it does have the BBCode tag options readily available on the post window. Yes, perhaps a bit finicky on a small screen, but not undoable.

Having said that though, the forum source code, just as every other bit of BOINC can be freely downloaded and tinkered with. They can then upload patches to Github and hoping the other developers see merit in it and want to add the new code.

The forum code in itself hasn't changed here, the only thing that changed was that there are new CSS files being loaded, with new colours, fonts and columns. The screen setup, so you will. And that's also why the Seti Server Status Page is doing things differently. All the pages in the forums are PHP, whereas the SSP is plain HTML output. What I assume is that since we're logged in via a PHP page that that data cannot be linked to a plain HTML page (and vice versa) for security reasons. If Seti were using the standard PHP server page it would probably be possible to do so. The other projects use the PHP SP, so they shouldn't be afflicted.

The previous Seti page setup used a third party navigation bar at the top and bottom that did all these things. I have asked David for the source code of those bars and when he sends that to me, I'll look into it how that bar did the logging in part across PHP and HTML pages. Something to help me pass the days this Christmas, if at least I can tear myself away from my new UltraHD 4K LED Smart TV. :)

Edit: removing a redundant 'it'.

So many messages here in this thread (currently 239) - I'm sorry I couldn't read all (with my poor english (and because of this new website style))... - maybe someone other wrote this below already?

It not longer make fun to read the forum.

Black background and white letters...?
This isn't good for the eyes...
It make very tired after very short time.
It's hard work for the eyes...

I read the forum ~ 10 mins and now... - I don't know how to describe - I need to go away and relax my eyes...

Example, why amazon sell the 'Kindle Paperwhite' ebook reader (white background black letters)?
I guess it's very good for the eyes...?

OMG - the website style currently is so terrible.

If it's absolutely needed to have this style, please, please, PLEASE - give us users the possibility to choose different styles!

White background and black letters is the best for the eyes to read.

I have to leave now - I got headache...

EDIT:
BTW.
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. :-)

Sorry Ageless, I get really tired of disussing this, since "they" don't care anyway, so just a short answer: Thx for the hint about the text size, I will try that. And yeah, I agree, autoplay on videos is a no-go, but all forums I know which allow video posting (I think on some it's just for yt anyway) do not have autoplay enabled. And yes, I'm aware it's the same old forum with just a new style. That's what I was complaining about.

Under the new HTML5 there isn't an option to disable autoplay, it's always on. You can try that on Youtube, disable the Autoplay option on the right and load any HTML5 video: it'll auto start. It can only be disabled using a special HTML5 autoplay-disabling plugin, where available.

since "they" don't care anyway
Well, everything I sent to David about the setup and bugs has been taken care of. It works. Whether you like it is something different. In the future additions such as user selectable backgrounds will probably be available. There's just someone who has to code it and add it.

Your 'they' is at the moment one person. Who has his plate full with developing ALL of BOINC. And he does care, he just doesn't respond well to personal attacks over something as trivial as a change to how the forums are drawn. Who would?
So why did he add it? Because BOINC has to go forward, its development can't sit still as then he'll never be able to get funding back. At least with his show card, the Seti project, now looking all snazzy again and ready for a few years more, perhaps that potential donors will fork over their money easier.

OK, that's your point of view. Mine is a bit different. I saw ppl asking questions on the forums, questions only the staff can answer, no response. I saw ppl asking if the project needs some more computer power. ( https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=80434 ) No answer. Three days later I get an (mass)email from Eric telling me that the project needs more power. LOL. So it's not just that "they" don't answer personal attacks, they (almost) never answer/talk to us.

In the Database/file status section the 'Master database queries/second' and 'Replica seconds behind master' as of times don't line up with the column header- and that column header is way, way, way out to the right.
In User accounts, Community preferences, the 'Signature for message board posts' input box and the 'How to sort Thread:' & 'Posts:' selector boxes extend all the way to right of the page.

So it's not just that "they" don't answer personal attacks, they (almost) never answer/talk to us.

Perhaps not through the forums, but David does answer emails if you're emailing in a friendly and polite manner. At the same time, you can read from the reactions in this thread that he was reading the forums at the time of the initial setup. For instance, the original setup was with Slate, that's since changed to Darkly. All of the font sizes have changed, most of the (link) colours have changed. All because of feedback through this thread and people emailing in. So what do you want him to talk about?

As for the SSP, I wasn't far off with my assumption on this, here's what David wrote to me earlier:
The S@h server status is different from other pages; it's generated off-line (as an .html file) and cached. So it can't show login info.

There's a way to fix this - generate the page without a header, then add the header when it's viewed.
I'll think about this.

Which he did and then he fixed it. Someone best start to wash his Petri dishes before the colonies on them grow out of bounds.

It never came to my mind to pm or email DA or anybody else from staff. That's way too personal for me.
And it's not about DA, it's about Seti staff in general. I thought I made that clear by what I wrote. I also wrote that there are questions only staff can answer. I remember, for example, many ppl asking about the ntpckr and the state of the project, is work actually done or not?
Also, I think the forum should serve as a knowledge base and therefore the input from staff would be valuable.
And finally, I think it would be nice to just have "us", instead of "us" and "them". But maybe that's just me, beeing too naive, as usual;-)

And now I'm really outta here. No more to say.
