That doesn't read like "significant research". I don't even see any cited studies, surveys, or testing methodology. It was written by a single author so I'm inclined to believe it's his opinion, and I think it may be confirmation bias of those that agree. Even the commenters are arguing with the author and telling him he's wrong.
Try Ogilvy on Advertising ISBN 0-394-72903-X pages 96 to 101. The caption on page 101, David Ogilvy wrote:
This charity raised money for starving children by running advertisements set in reverse - white type on a black background. When I suggested that they test black type on a white background, they raised twice as much money.

I think the head of one of the most successful direct response advertising agencies might know a thing or two about typography.

What does advertising got to do with website design?

What does typography have to do with website design? Did you actually say that?

No, I said advertising. Advertising != typography. An advertising expert who knows a thing or two about typography doesn't mean he would know about website design. Though to your credit your example carries far more weight than the others provided in this thread.

...and of course let us not forget that website developers the world over change things for the sake of changing them. Despite the protests from users.

I'd be happy if my two sig blocks were displaying side by side, as they used to be.
And if email notification of PMs was working again.

I mentioned a simple fix for that back in December (Message 1834656), but my suggestion was never picked up. The default "display: inline" attribute is being overridden by "display: block" in the "upgrade".

If you're using Firefox, you can try a little experiment. Right-click on your first sig image, then choose "Inspect Element". You'll see a "display:block" attribute in the lower right panel, with a check box next to it. Click that box to deselect that attribute and the default "display:inline" will take effect, which should move your sigs back to a side-by-side position. Of course, they'll only stay that way until you reload the page. :^)

Well they are working for me. Have had several over the last few days.

I use Gmail so perhaps it is your mail provider?

They will also show as a notification in BOINC Manager. Even when the preference is to send only to account (no email).

I am on sbcglobal.net.
Got a couple of PMs in the last hour. No email notification.
I believe I am NOT the only one this is broken for.

It's never worked for me, and I've tried individual, as well as daily notifications.

It has always worked for me.
The last one I received was on 4/15/2017 7:27 AM.
Something went south after that point and I have not received one since.

And I got an e-mail at 18:57 today.

So what is different about our respective e-mails? What changed back in April?

Well, my email domain is btinternet.com

I posted some thoughts about the areas that may contain useful diagnostics in a post at BOINC - BOINC message 78107. But they're all server-side, so only accessible to project server admins - not to us mere volunteer mortals.

Another thought after that post - outgoing emails may be blacklisted by the next SMTP server in line, because of all the spam recently. That should also be logged via an SMTP failure/rejection message, again in the server logs (Sendmail, not BOINC). If different mail providers subscribe to different blacklisting services, that might explain why some ISPs let the mail through and others don't.

Seems it is BOINC. It may have been an update to sendmail in a Linux update. The other possibility is the UNI blocked port 25 outbound as part of some security update/upgrade.

I received an email today for a PM sent to me a few days ago. Very random, and like I said, I've never gotten email notifications in the past.

Others were having problems and it was reported over at the Boinc forums.

Eric has said there was a DNS problem.

I was one of the ones who reported missing emails, both from the SETI sites (including Beta) and from the BOINC site. The delayed BOINC messages arrived yesterday, and the SETI ones have appeared overnight. So it seems that a significant problem (which affected some, but not all, of us) has been identified and fixed. I'm surprised to hear that it's been attributed to DNS, but I haven't got any better insights.

As I said over on BOINC, I thought it could be a bad (malformed) A or MX record, part of DNS, that caused some very picky email systems to reject receipt, but I was guessing.
In any case I thank Eric for getting it sorted and getting the delayed e-mails out.
