. . . of joining a team, but I really don't know how to go about it. It seems like it would be fun to hang out and chat and contribute to a team effort. So far (one day) I have 5,454 points, although I'm not sure that even after reading the description of Work Units I know what the points actually mean. What do teams do? With whom do they compete?

I suppose this all sounds noobish and that it has been asked before. But reading around a bit hasn't really answered my questions :-)
Any advice or suggestions welcome!

Hi, Jeff.
As no one has answered you as yet, I'll take a stab at it.
How to join a team:
You can join a team from your user profile by clicking a Join Team link in the Community section. There you can select one from a large list of available teams.
Why join a team:
As you note, you can perhaps find some companionship, conversation, knowledge and competition as part of a team. My original intent was to accelerate my learning curve, but team membership did not prove to help with that. The message areas were far more effective in that regard.
What team to join:
All depends. Perhaps a team that shares a common interest (Macs, Linux, etc.), or other employees at your workplace (like IBM), or other students at your University, or, like in my case, other residents of your state or city. Scroll the lists; you might find something leaping out at you. Remember, you can only belong to one team, but you can change membership if you wish as easily as you joined in the future.
Points and competition:
You'll find that points and credit are a bit controversial, especially as to how much you get "paid" for which types of work. I wouldn't worry much about it, except as a measure of how your system is performing in relation to other similar systems. The basic concept is that credit is awarded loosely based on the number of raw computations you perform in the course of processing a work unit (WU). I find it useful not as an absolute, but as a reference that allows me to see the effect of attempts I make to fine tune performance.
I haven't seen a tremendous amount of competition between people or teams, though the Germans have several competitions they sponsor that are open to all. At some point if your system rises to that level of production, the site may award you a tag indicating your performance relative to others, such as Bronze (top 25%), Silver (%5) or Gold (1%), in current Recent Average Credit (RAC).

Hopefully, this gives you a bit of a flavor as to what it's all about.
Regards, Jim ...

Hi Jim--

Thanks so much for helping a new guy! What you wrote makes perfect sense. Hopefully, I will be able to help another wandering noob on some day in the far future :-)

Best,

Jeff

Something to note - some teams are highly competitive, others are highly social, and others are just plain "off the wall" - choose one that looks like a good fit for a few weeks, and if you don't fit try another.
