'Planet Nine' Can't Hide Much Longer, Scientists Say

Planet Nine's days of lurking unseen in the dark depths of the outer solar system may be numbered.

The hypothetical giant planet, which is thought to be about 10 times more massive than Earth, will be discovered within 16 months or so, astronomer Mike Brown predicted.

"I'm pretty sure, I think, that by the end of next winter — not this winter, next winter — I think that there'll be enough people looking for it that … somebody's actually going to track this down," Brown said during a news conference Wednesday (Oct. 19) at a joint meeting of the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences (DPS) and the European Planetary Science Congress (EPSC) in Pasadena, California. Brown said that eight to 10 groups are currently looking for the planet. [The Evidence for 'Planet Nine' in Images (Gallery)]

The mysterious 'Planet Nine' might be causing the whole solar system to wobble,

"More evidence for ninth planet roaming solar system's outer fringes"

However, there are a few known Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) that are unlikely to be significantly perturbed by the known giant planets in their current orbits. Referred to as "extreme KBOs" (eKBOs) by the authors, all of these have extremely large orbital eccentricities, in other words, they get very close to the Sun at one point on their orbital journey, only to swing far out into space once they pass the Sun, on long elliptical orbits that take these strange mini worlds hundreds of AUs away from the Sun.

"We analyzed the data of these most distant Kuiper Belt objects," Malhotra said, "and noticed something peculiar, suggesting they were in some kind of resonances with an unseen planet."

If there is another unknown planet out there and if it conforms to the recent definition of what constitutes a planet then it should have cleared away objects in its orbital path leaving the opposite of a ring in the kupier belt and maybe they can find that.

My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events.
