Message 1850784 - Posted: 23 Feb 2017, 15:18:00 UTC - in response to Message 1850778.

The New Yorker dated 27th Feb 2017.

Today is 23rd Feb 2017.

Evidence of time travel?

No, just an attempt at buzz

I actually missed the interpretation of the cover for the newest issue. A friend told me it represented the large number of females nominated for the Oscar this year.

Do you have a carbon monoxide detector?

Just like with a lot of things, No I don't, I can't get everything with what I get.

See if your local fire dept. will provide you one for free.

Vic...
Do you have a carbon monoxide detector?

Just like with a lot of things, No I don't, I can't get everything with what I get.

And I don't run the gas range when I'm sleeping.

And yes the back end of the home where one of the bathrooms is at feels like its near freezing there, brr.

You need to get one ASAP to protect yourself and Grace.
You live in a somewhat confined space (as opposed to a home with much more square footage), have a furnace that tends to be unreliable, and sometimes resort to using an appliance as a heating device.
No matter if you don't run the oven whilst sleeping. It is not designed to be used for heating.
Carbon monoxide can knock you out before you realize it is happening during the day as well.
I have a couple simply because my furnace is very old, and if something would go wrong with the heat exchanger, it could release exhaust fumes into my house.

I understand you have to do what you have to do, but please get a detector as soon as you can.......check with your closest fire department. Some have programs to help you buy one or even supply one free of charge.

The staff may be volunteers, but it is still worth "banging on their door" to see if they can provide a carbon monoxide detector/alarm.

Going there would be a hardship right now, I have about a quarter of a tank left, I do have a limit to My income, do you and others think I have lots of extra income?

If you and others do, have I got news for you, I do not..........................................

I get "Why don't you do this or that", like constantly from you guys...

I am not made of money, or is everyone too dense to ack that????

And Vic, you cannot reach the fire department by phone to ask about the alarm?
Or perhaps they have a website with email contact?
Was it Yermo?

Well, at least you asked them. Being a small volunteer department, I can understand not having funding for such a program.

There are also some available on ebay for $10.00 or less, if you care to look.

Meow, Vic.

Vic, we KNOW you aren't made of money, but you are not helping your case by the way in which you go about things. Every time someone suggests you try something to get you out of your current hole you throw it back in their face with some excuse or other. This time it was no fuel in you car, when you had already contacted the local fire department about getting an alarm.

and Vic - one simple google got this:
https://www.facebook.com/events/286750801669725/?active_tab=about
The American Red Cross is working with coalition partners to help reduce death and injuries from home fires by 25% in 5 years. The Yermo/Calico FD is teaming up with the ARC to bring this program to Yermo to enhance public safety the education and installation of free smoke alarms. We are also looking for additional volunteer groups to help make this happen. Learn more about the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign!

So kick that door (well, not literally) and see what happens.

I don't have the money right now, and I may never have the money, not for a few years..................................

$10 for a Carbon monoxide detector , ain't YOU'R or anybody's life worth more than $10 ???
thats about £ 7 / £8 in "proper " money

I don't think using your cooker to heat your home is very sensible at all but get a detector for fu#ks sake even if you have to go " without" a few things for a couple of weeks . And i'm not meaning essentials before you say .

If you did end up getting Carbon Monoxide poisoning i'll bet you will be posting and moaning about it after you recover , BUT then there's a very good chance you wouldn't , you would be DEAD . That's the bottom line and the RISK you're taking EVERY time you use your oven for heating your home .
Life is what you make of it :-)

When i'm good i'm very good , but when i'm bad i'm shi#eloads better ;-) In't I " buttercups " p.m.s.l at authoritie !!;-)

Gertrude, get the pills ready :-)

Sorry Vic, Chris is right. Nobody is dictating to you but just providing advice which is your choice to accept or ignore. Since an incident over a decade ago, I had one installed. So it cost me, but isn't it better to be able to wake up in the mornings? Btw, the shop in the report was directly opposite our home. Not too happy about the photo, but have a good excuse, police woke us up at 05:10 so no chance to shave but at least everyone in the area had the opportunity to freshen up on their return to their homes.

It so easily could have ended up a disaster area.

Anyone interested in a writing gig?

It's dream job hiring time! We’re looking for talented writers in Los Angeles to come to Newegg HQ, test the latest hardware and write about it! That’s right, we got a load of hot gear and no one to touch it. Content includes reviews, overviews, benchmarks, video scripts, guides, snarky commentary and more.
We need word jockeys with a passion for motherboards, CPUs, PC building, water cooling, geek stuff and more geek stuff. Really, if you have niche hardware-specific skills, let us know. And if you’re already a PC journalist in the biz, we really need to talk.
To get the gig, you need to live in LA, have transportation to get to the ‘egg mothership and be legally employable. And, yes, you will be well compensated for your writing/nerding skills.
Writing gigs include occasional freelance (articles once a month or so), regular freelance (multiple weekly articles) and potentially full time gainful employment with bennies. We’re also growing our Newegg Studios video channel so multifaceted abilities are a plus. And if you think you’re cut out to be the next internet hardware star, don’t be shy, send us a link.
To apply, send us a hot writing sample (doesn’t have to be about hardware), your hardware experience (prove your PC geek cred) and standard vanilla resume.
We do have multiple positions but we can’t hire everyone. For the right people, this is definitely dream job territory so let’s make it happen!
Email your info to glorious@newegg.com

I'm closer and am from Los Angeles originally, but even though I can write, building hardware is not as easy as it used to be for Me.

As to the CO Detector, I think I have a line on one, someone said He'd send Me one, so I pmed the guy.

That would be a kind gesture.
I was NOT trying to berate you, Vic.
Sometimes you take kind advice as somebody trying to tell you what you HAVE to do.
You are not the only one who sometimes is blind to what is right before your eyes.

Most of us realize you are not a man of unlimited resources.
We do, however, sometimes try to nudge you in the right direction.
We Setizens try to look out after one another at times.
And that was all that I was trying to do when you said you were using an oven range as a heater.
Every fire department in the United States recommends and encourages that every home has at least a smoke detector and if possible, a CO detector. It's not that my suggestion for you was anything new.

Part of being prepared is being aware.
Any residence that is connected to the power grid has the potential for having an unexpected fire.
Not a high risk, but the possibility. It happens every day, and that is why there are fire departments and why I build fire trucks. I was building one just yesterday for a very small town out west. Population less than 5,000. And they had ponied up enough resources to buy a small pumper truck. Basic, but capable. Estimated cost? About $400,000 for that one. Just a guessitmate, but most pumper trucks run at least that.
Moral of the story, Vic? That fire truck, do the math, cost everybody in that township $80.00 apiece. Because when it happens, as the saying goes, 'It's all about little Suzie'.

You post all the time about your trials and tribulations. Ad infinitum. So, please do not be so haughty when others post suggestions for you to get around a few of them. We are just trying to help, and I know a few posts may be ignorant of your means to do so. I think we all mean well.

I hope that in the future you may see some of our posts as not trying to 'tell you what to do', but rather as folks who would rather have you around longer than not.

Meow, Victor.

It's ok that everyone knows it's me.
I think shipping products to your address that contain lithium batteries is going to be difficult. I wonder what other options are open?

I don't think it shall be a problem.
I get things from ebay with batteries all the time.
They simply are labeled 'ground shipping only'.
If you have any trouble, advise me, and I shall get Vic a proper detector.
I had already thought about doing so yesterday.
These things ship everywhere without trouble or question all the time.

You would not see them on ebay or Amazon if they could not ship them anywhere or everywhere.

Vic,
Your CO detector is on its way, For some reason Amazon would not ship to you that detector, but when I added the multispark thing, that was ok to ship. Hopefully you'll get it soon.

Back in I think December I noticed there was a closeout on LED lamps at Stater Bros Market, $3.59 for 7w and $3.99 for 9w and 10.5w lamps, I bought all the GE LED lamps that they had. I still have a 9w and a 7w to install, one requires a new ladder since one location is out of My 6'1" reach.

And how much has this spending of your limited funds on new lamps saved on your electricity bill?

Or put it another way. In which year to you expect to get a return on your investment?
