General Tagge: What of the Rebellion? If the Rebels have obtained a complete technical reading of this station, it is possible, however unlikely, they might find a weakness and exploit it.
Darth Vader: The plans you refer to will soon be back in our hands.
Admiral Motti: Any attack made by the Rebels against this station would be a useless gesture, no matter what technical data they have obtained. This station is now the ultimate power in the universe! I suggest we use it!
Darth Vader: Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.
Admiral Motti: Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader. Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the rebels' hidden fort-...
[Vader makes a pinching motion and Motti starts choking]
Darth Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Governor Tarkin: Enough of this! Vader, release him!
Darth Vader: As you wish.
[He does]

Han: Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.
Luke: You don’t believe in the Force, do you?
Han: Kid, I’ve flown from one side of this galaxy to the other. I’ve seen a lot of strange stuff, but I’ve never seen anything to make me believe there’s one all-powerful Force controlling everything. There’s no mystical energy field controls my destiny! It’s all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.

Stiles: These are Romulans! You run away from them and you guarantee war. They'll be back - not just one ship, but with everything they've got. You know that, Mr. Science Officer. You're the expert on these people, but you've always left out that one point. Why? I'm very interested in why.

Captain James T. Kirk: Sit down, mister.

[Stiles does so, there is an awkward silence]

Mr. Spock: I agree. Attack.

Captain James T. Kirk: Are you suggesting we fight... to prevent a fight?

Dr. McCoy: Based on what? Memories of a war over a century ago? On theories about a people we've never even met face to face?

Stiles: We know what they look like...

Mr. Spock: Yes, indeed we do, Mr. Stiles. And if the Romulans are an offshoot of my Vulcan blood - and I think this likely - then attack becomes even more imperative.

Dr. McCoy: War is never imperative, Mr. Spock.

Mr. Spock: It is for them, Doctor. Vulcan, like Earth, had its aggressive, colonizing period - savage, even by Earth standards - and if the Romulans retain this martial philosophy, then weakness is something we dare not show.

I just discovered a series of books: William Shakespeare's Star Wars, ... the Empire Striketh Back, ... the Jedi Doth Return, and also the prequel trilogy. They are written like Shakespeare play scripts, with stage directions and all that. Most of the characters speak in proper iambic pentameter. Characters that don't speak at all in the movies have lines, some of which it's rather ridiculous for them to (like the wampa that captures Luke on Hoth). Some of them make snide comments about the production of the movies. R2D2 has lines too, although the other characters only hear him say "beep meep whistle squeak."

Even better, the original trilogy has been produced on audio, with full sound effects and music. I would suppose the prequels are in production.

At the end of "Empire," the author talks for a few minutes. Part of it is his dilemma over how to write Yoda, who already speaks somewhat Elizabethan-ly. Leave his lines intact from the movie? Change him to modern English? Revert him even farther back to Chaucer-like Old English? (Hint: none of the above.)

Check your local library. Or Amazon, I suppose.

I'd probably think it was even funnier if I knew Shakespeare better. I listened to "Empire" first (because "Verily, a New Hope" was checked out on the e-reader platform I was using) and recognized a few lines here and there, which I thought he dropped in just for humor. In "Jedi" someone said "a hit, a palpable hit" before falling into the saarlac pit. Then I stopped after Act I when I found "New Hope" for a different e-reader. Listening to that, I realized it's more than just a few random lines: he's taking whole passages from Shakespeare and modifying them to fit the story of Star Wars. Luke's single line in the movie about hitting womp rats with his T-16 back home now falls about in the middle of his lengthy "friends, rebels, starfighters, lend me your ears" speech.

With that, dear friends, I shall now cease to give
More spoilers, for I know they dost annoy.

I'd really like to read at least one of them before listening to the audio, but I'm months behind on my train magazines, let alone any other reading. I like audio books because I can listen to them while driving. However, episodes 1-3 aren't out (yet? I hope) on audio, so I may do one of those.

Okay, I said no more spoilers, but here's a link to the publisher's page for "Verily, a New Hope" with links to a book trailer, an educator's guide, and the other books.

I would love to see these acted on stage, too.
