What happened to the SETI@HOME Screensaver?

Why doesn't it appear on my computer screen anymore?

The only screensavers I'm seeing now are EINSTEIN@HOME Screensaver and the WORLD COMMUNITY GRID Screensaver.

Please bring back the SETI@HOME Screensaver.

I realize that with the advent of flat screen monitors (I use my Vizio 32" HD television set for my computer monitor), screensavers are no longer necessary, but I just enjoy watching the SETI@HOME Screensaver, the EINSTEIN@HOME Screensaver, and the WORLD COMMUNITY GRID Screensaver(s).

You are running work on your Intel GPU. GPU applications do not have the graphics application, they never had those here at Seti. When in the past the development team ported over the science application to use Nvidia's CUDA, they decided to only port over the sc ience app, not the graphics app.

This decision was made with in mind that the graphics processing unit (GPU) was doing the calculations and that adding the graphics app/screen saver might make the error rate go up.

All science applications running on the GPU since that time are a continuation of that early app and are without graphics application thus without the project screen saver. If you want to see it, run Seti work on your CPU.

How do I do that?

I didn't know that was an option.

I didn't know there was any difference between the Intel GPU and my computer's CPU, nor do I know that I had any control over either one.

Please explain to me, step by step, how to do this.

My computer is a Hewlett Packard Notebook with a Windows 10 operating system, connected to a Vizio 32" HD Television set, and using a Microsoft keyboard and mouse.

He didn't explain how to get CPU tasks because it was you who stopped them (they are ON by default)
So if you stopped them from being Downloaded you know how to get CPU tasks again.

At some point in time you unchecked "Use CPU" here:
SETI@home preferences

You did only 1 task by the current CPU application "SETI@home v8 8.00 windows_intelx86":

I don't think it's fair to say that he turned them off. Given the other project's he's involved in (and depending on his resource shares), it's entirely possible that they are monopolizing his CPU.

I just looked at my SETI@HOME Preferences, and my "USE CPU" option is not unchecked.

It's strange then that only one SETI@home CPU task was done since you added that computer (4 Jul 2016)

You may try to temporarily (e.g. for 1 h) Suspend the other projects and possibly some SETI@home CPU tasks will be Downloaded.

On 'Projects tab' - select some project (e.g. Einstein@Home) and click [Suspend] button at left:

I wonder where you're seeing that my computer has completed only one (01) work unit?

Do you reckon all the other work units were aborted?

Currently, there are no SETI@HOME work units running, but I expect to receive more work units at any moment.

Maybe the problem is this computer.

It's a new one that I purchased to replace my beloved Toshiba Satellite laptop that suddenly went, "KERBLOOEY ! ! !", after years of faithful service.

On that computer, I was always able to see the SETI@HOME screensaver.

No, he said you've only crunched a single CPU workunit. CPU workunits are the only ones with the screen saver here at SETI. The rest you've completed are all GPU workunits, where SETI has utilized your graphics card to crunch data. GPU workunits don't have a screen saver here at SETI.

When you click on anyone's name, you'll get to their external account.
Click on the "View" link for Computers.
Under "Computer ID" click on the "Tasks" link.
This opens onto a page showing all of the tasks that the computer in question has downloaded (In progress) and returned (other messages).

When you look in the "Application" column, you can see what device was used to run the tasks. And although now all show SETI@home v8 v8.12 (opencl_intel_gpu_sah) windows_intelx86, I'm sure that when BilBg checked earlier this week, that one of them showed it had run on the CPU.

The database deletes tasks 24 hours after they were returned, as when they're all kept the database will grow too enormous to keep. The result data of the ran workunit was stored in the scientific database, that's the only one that holds results from all tasks run over the years. It's several terabytes big.

I'd noticed that when SETI@HOME work units were running, if I clicked on "GRAPHICS", that the B.O.I.N.C. program would indicate there were no graphics for the SETI@HOME work units.

:) Not really, all tasks at that time (23 Aug 2016, 6:02:49 UTC) were opencl_intel_gpu_sah

I looked at:
"Number of tasks completed 1"
"Consecutive valid tasks 1"

(yes, we know that the "Number of tasks completed 1" don't count overflows and similar but in this case is good enough to show that "very few" SETI@home tasks were done by CPU app)

You just can't click [Show graphics] button - it will be grey for GPU applications here at SETI@home
How "the BOINC program" indicated to you that "there were no graphics"?

! Graphics don't come with "work units", it comes with applications.
The exactly same WU - if done by CPU SETI@home stock application - will Show graphics!
