A couple of weeks ago I bought a van equipped with a folding handicapped ramp that allows me to leave home without outside help and with a much better level of safety. Last week after attending a lunch party with some of my former co workers I experienced a problem with the van that I had never seen before. After lowering the ramp I tried to start the van which caused the alarm to go off and the engine stalled after about 15 seconds. After several attempts it finally started after I waited about 10 minutes. At the time I thought it was vapor lock from the car sitting out in the bright sunlight as it was a very hot day. Last night it happened again around midnight. I called a friend who I knew had owned a similar vehicle. He told me to shut everything off after opening the window and then insert the key in the door lock and unlock the vehicle that way. The car then started and ran perfectly. Up til now I have never owned a car with a factory installed alarm system. When I opened the sliding door for the ramp I used the remote control for the ramp so when I inserted the key in the ignition the alarm went off as the alarm had not been disarmed by unlocking the door with either the door key or the remote key fob. So now I know that when the vehicle has been locked I need to unlock the doors before using the handicapped ramp. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |
