As I have previously mentioned I am currently living on the Isle Of Wight, just outside the town of Yarmouth.

Everyday I go for a walk along the shore to the town and back again. Today being Sunday there were a few pleasure seekers about.



They certainly don't hang about.

As I got closer to Yarmouth I noticed across the marina an unusual vessel moored at the pier.



It appeared to be a paddle steamer, not a lot of those about.

In fact it was The PS Waverley



The very last ocean going passenger carrying paddle steamer in the world. Fittingly moored at the end of the only operational wooden pier in the British Isles.

As luck would have it she cast off and moved away.



She was on a pleasure trip from Southampton, Yarmouth, Bournemouth, Swanage and Weymouth returning this evening going "round the island"

I like this last picture as the regular Isle of Wight ferry stops to let the Waverley pass.




PS. I would post more pictures but Photobucket is just so slow it is annoying and none of the other picture sites allow me to put all my pictures in folders the same way as PB does.

Well to be perfectly honest I don't know, looking after my dad is not too stressful but he does have routines and I leave myself free to be able to help out as and when.

Unfortunately because of the distance from where this computer is to the router I am not able to get a good enough connection to watch streaming videos for long periods.

However things might change, too early to tell.

As some Setizens already know, I have a family connection with the PS Waverley, and in May 2015 I was privileged to join her for her 40th. anniversary cruise, since leaving commercial service with Caledonian MacBrayne and being sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society (famously, for one pound).

I boarded at her home port of Glasgow



and before casting off, checked the last minute preparations for the engines and forward saloon.





Although she was built in 1946, it was a rush job to replace a predecessor lost during the evacuation of Dunkirk, and they just dusted off the old plans and rebuilt her in the style of the 1920s, the heyday of Clyde cruising.

With all respect to the Isle of Wight, I do think she looks her best in the waters of the Firth of Clyde.

By coincidence, my afternoon walk today also had a nautical connection, with another historic vessel of almost exactly the same age. The Kennet was built for the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (which passes within a mile of my house), and is visiting in preparation for the 200th. anniversary of the first complete voyage between those cities, next month.

Thanks both. I won't bore you with the whole travelogue, but I do agree that she is far more elegant than the modern equivalents we steamed past:





Compared with planes and trains, there is so much more space to move around in - and she's delightfully smooth to travel in, even at speed on the open seas.

Talking of speed, by another coincidence yesterday evening I watched a repeat of a BBC documentary on a predecessor of the Waverley, the Confederate blockade runner the Robert E. Lee. In their day, the Clyde paddlers were the fastest ships available - Waverley has a maximum speed under test of 18 knots at 57 rpm, although her normal service speed 1s 13 knots at 44 rpm. According to the BBC, just two successful runs carrying munitions into Wilmington and Southern cotton back to the UK would make enough profit to completely pay for the construction of the ship and all fuel used: any additional runs before being sunk were pure profit for the owners and (one hopes) crew.

I had heard that the sunsets at Fort Victoria can be pretty spectacular.

So this evening I took a stroll there.

The sun sets at the moment directly behind Hurst Castle on the mainland.

It was quite cloudy but there were lost of breaks.

This was what it looked like when I arrived.




Slowly the sun dropped below the cloud and I got this.

There were quite a lot of people there and it was quite a spectecal.
