How do you know if the software has detected alien radio signals? I don't want to know about the bandwidths etc. I just want to know the simple version of that and what it would look like if the software detected alien radio signals.

Immediately - you won't.

This is because we are taking part in an initial screening of data, to remove the unwanted noise from potential signals. There are at least two more stages of analysis before there is any chance that SETI@Home would announce that a probable signal had been detected, then a few more including very detailed observations of the stellar location would be required. Followed by the World's press arriving at number 47 Acacia Gardens......
