First link has photos. Second link also got a video from a BBC reporter, made a few months ago.

Not sure if this deserves it's own thread. FAST mentioned in a few other recent threads. But it appears FAST is now completed, about 2 months ahead of schedule. There will be a long period of testing and fine tuning. Article does mention search for ET but no specific details.

That bit about the "lucky" villagers being relocated, lol, I wonder if they really feel that way. Could be true. Anyway, I hope this new telescope will observe interesting data for many years.

And only chinese scientists will have access to data/instrumentations/etc during the next 2/3 years. After that, they said "The telescope will then be left to scientists worldwide, who will be able to carry out remote control and observation".

And..."China insists its programme is for peaceful purposes but the US defence department has highlighted China’s increasing space capabilities, saying it is pursuing activities aimed to prevent adversaries from using space-based assets in a crisis."

So, we might expect FAST to be used also for SETi@home?!

If the Chinese were more smart than narcissistic , then maybe. My Chinese friends are skeptical and say the government are still corrupt, but at least clueless enough to throw some money around. [that money being debt from other countries, but digressing into economics]

From what I saw in images, the "source feed cabin" is rather small and I doubt it could contain the SETI receivers. Also, FAST focuses to a point and not to a line like Arecibo. I read that the first 300 meters are really parabolic, not spherical.

At the beginning the project's admins said that the first 2 years of activity was ONLY for China's scientists, now seems that is open for everyone....

Probably they have realized that they still have something to learn, after the Jade Rabbit failure on the Moon and the Tiangong-1 out of control. China is pushing ahead in science and spending 2% of its GNP. I know that Roberto Battiston, the head of the Italian Space Agency, is in contact with the China Academy of Science.
