Very odd. Had to reboot and then found that no CPU tasks were running. There should be four plus my NVIDIA tasks. Only NVIDIA is running and I cannot download new CPU tasks and still none are running. I have changed no settings anywhere that I know of. According to my account data, computer Starbug currently has some 570 tasks, none of which I can see on my computer. BOINC knows there are 4 CPUs available. There appear to be piles of Version 8 files waiting. Why on earth does BOINC think I have a limit of three tasks? What have I done and what should I do?

Which computer are you talking about? The one with the graphic card?

If yes, you have over 216 errors on that machine.

Something has happen to it that is causing it to throw error.

Probably need to check that computer and make sure it's not overheating or that it's clogged with dust bunnies

I'd also test your hard drive for errors.

Cheers.

Many thanks for the advice. Hard disc thoroughly checked and nothing wrong whatsoever. Happily, I have now downloaded a pile of v8 tasks and they are so far checking out OK. When I have a chance I shall crack the machine open and give it a good blow and suck and see what it looks like then.
One though, however. I recently started using AVG Zen for all virus and disc functions. I am not sure if it really cares for Boinc. I suspect it tries to check every operation for safety and maybe that is causing occasional jerks in operation.
Anyway, keeping fingers crossed.

One suggestion, if you are comfortable with it. Many times you can exclude programs and/or directories from the scan or allow the program to work unimpeded, making it a trusted program. Not sure about the one you are using, you might want to hit their website and give it a look over, this may help you with it's confict with BOINC? Just a thought.

Yes, AVG has and Exclude directory option.

I have BOINC and BonicTasks excluded, so it doesn't look at all those reads/writes that happen.

I am always lost in (genuine) admiration for all you people who know how to do things. I am a mere mortal who wants to be able to use this darn machine!
Anyway, for now things appear to have returned to normal. Tasks are being run and completed and the Gods are allowing me as many tasks as I need.
Thanks once again for all the advice - some of which is completely beyond me but is still very much appreciated.

As TBar suggested, the explanation can be found in 1073741205 Error Code (Unknown Error). The errors result from a BOINC problem that's sometimes caused when the BOINC client and its science applications are still running during a system shutdown. It primarily seems to be occurring on Windows 7 systems. The simplest workaround at present is to ensure that you exit BOINC and the client applications first, before performing a system shutdown or restart.

The latest beta version of BOINC, 7.6.33, appears to address the tail end of the problem (though not the root cause), thus managing to avoid (in most cases) causing the tasks to get the errors you've experienced, but that version hasn't been released for general use as yet.
