I went to sign the petition and it says it is closed because it did not reach the minimum requirement of 100,000 signatures. |

I wouldn't worry too much about the closure of Arecibo. The Chinese are bringing a much larger and more up to date version on line soon and one of its tasks will be to search for SETI. Our problem will be getting the US Powers-that-be to work with the Chinese, and to get rid of the effects of the brain-fart that doesn't have us working with the Chinese on the ISS. Together, we could colonize the moon in the next decade and then proceed with the colonization of Mars shortly thereafter. If we don't start working with the Chinese, they'll simply do it all without us, and future generations will have to show their passports to enter the Chinese colonies on the Moon/Mars. |

There is an article on "Nature" magazine of June 30 about fast radio bursts, an unexplained phenomenon. They were discovered in old Parkes data and confirmed in Arecibo data, two telescopes risking closure as old hardware. Tullio |

I've also been wondering if the new Chinese telescope will possibly fill the void if Arecibo is closed. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

I would not bet that Chinese scientists are interested in SETI. See also bobovitz's post in SETI@home Science section. Tullio |

Yes, it will search for life. Not necessarily intelligent life, which is the aim of SETI. China likes to go alone and I doubt FAST will provide data to SETI@home. Tullio |
