What I gave is between my bank manager and myself. Perhaps not. https://crowdfund.berkeley.edu/project/1704/wall |

If I calculate correctly Arecibo has about 10 dB more gain than Green Bank. Looking after modulated CW signals by cross correlation of two parallel receiver channels on the same frequency to get rid of the remaining noise it is then possible to do integration. Instead of integrating during 12 seconds, the time for a celestial object to travel the duration of the Arecibo dish, it should be possible with Green Bank looked on target to integrate up to about 40800 seconds per day, i.e. with Green Bank it should be possible to reach a lot further into space. Also for pulsed signals Green Bank have the advantage after post processing. In both cases of course you have to handle Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) another way. Still I will vote for more time on Green Bank not Arecibo. |

Not to many signing the petition. I bet most people don't know what the Arecibo Observatory does. Maybe add to the description that it also searches for Extraterrestrial signals if we don't get 100,000 signatures. |

I think you're neglecting the tracking capabilities of the azimuth arm on which the ALFA receiver is mounted - and it's the ALFA receiver which is the current source of the Arecibo recordings searched by SETI@Home. According to http://www.naic.edu/~astro/guide/guide.pdf (specifically, table 2 on page 5), Arecibo has a maximum integration time of 166 seconds at an optimal declination around 18â—¦. Not as good as Green Bank, certainly, but not as bad as you suggest. |

Actually no. A star that spins can mean a donation from $250-$10,000 from the recent crowd-funding appeal. What I gave is between my bank manager and myself. And all stars that spin do so at the same rate, regardless of the amount. Was there a specific point that you wished to make? No point, just wild assumption. Grant Darwin NT |

Thank you for correcting me regarding Arecibo tracking capability. But the conclusion stands. To get better sensitivity much longer integration time is needed. That will probably require development of a new receiver, data collection/storage and software for SETI@home, maybe as part of the Breakthrough Initiative. |

G'day Eric, Instead of the US, why not lobby the Aussie Government. We're still spend bucket loads of money on astronomy, even after some cutbacks. CSIRO just built a massive antenna for the Chinese super-version of Arecibo too. I don't know of any site they've shut down either. It might be time they got one in Puerto Rico. If nothing else, it may shame the US Government into picking up its game. ;-) Click here to join the #1 Aussie Alliance in SETI |

G'day Eric, Our own Parkes Radio Telescope is threatened with closure also due to cut backs in Federal money and that is another planned source of data for use here. Cheers. |

Please provide link to the Petition. The link was in Eric's first post. The petition was started on the 27th May and as the 30 days have elapsed and it only received 7,979 signatures out of the necessary 100,000, it has be closed and archived. |

I just picked up on this thread. Sadly, apparently too late to sign the petition. |

I did sign the petition, but not being an American, I have some doubts on my contribution ! JF |

Hi Eric, The sad thing is, the USA is wasting 600 billion dollars to the military and don't have this little amount to keep Arecibo alive! Its really sad ... Cheers Bodo |

Tough to get science funding, especially for something like the search for extraterrestrial intelligence when the chairs of the science committees in both houses of Congress believe that the Earth is 6,000 years old and we were uniquely placed here by a God who made us in his image, which likely precludes that he did that on other worlds since we are so special. When the Chairman of the Science and Technology Committee in the Senate brings a snowball from outside onto the Senate floor as proof that there is no global warming, science funding is in BIG trouble! |

Tough to get science funding, especially for something like the search for Well Well Well. Heard a Few Weeks Ago, dat dere is mO Peoples stating dey Be Atheists dan People sayin' dey Are Believers. Since dere be SO MANY Atheists, and Most, if not all atheists, are Science Believers, then, gettin' up a few millions, tens of millions or hundreds of millions to Finance and Keep Goin' Arecibo, well well well, I'd Say since dat Ain't Happenin', there must be A CRISIS of BELIEF fO deeez Athiests. Or Maybe dey be Cheapskates and Don't Put Money where their BELIEFS are. I Know, leave it to Gubment, since dey Build Everythang; are CREATORS of Everythang; and well well well, let's Not have We The Science Believers, Believe, as Individuals, workin' As One, dey can get Anything Done. Yeah, keep hitting hard, anyone who Believes, People Can Do Anything, ifn THEY BELIEVE. Do You Believe in Arecibo? I Hear dA Believers Sayin' NO NO NO. Or, mO Like, I Don't Give A Shat. C'mon, PROVE Me Wrong, you know, like GOD can be Proved Not to Exist, 'cause I'm Seeing, Real Clear Like, dat da Proof of Arecibo NOT EXISTING, Real Soon, will be PROVED. Nah, Gubment has a SHAT LOAD of Money to Waste. Everythang will be fine. Got Tough? Yap. May we All have a METAMORPHOSIS. REASON. GOoD JUDGEMENT and LOVE and ORDER!!!!! |

Why are you assuming that not buying the 6-day-6,000-year-we're-individually-handcrafted mythos = atheism? False dichotomy. The Fallacy of The Excluded Middle. You may find more religious people reject it than accept it. Perhaps not those holding the purse strings in American politics though... at least so they claim... especially near election time. Perhaps this is why they see SETI as a threat. Might find something upsetting (ie we aren't the end-all and be-all one-and-only... perhaps not even in the running. And the rest of the universe wasn't plopped here to give us, all 0.00000000000000000000001% of it, something pretty to look at. That kind of upsetting.) |

If read a certain way, it almost looks as though your post is trying to challenge people to prove you wrong - and in the end Arecibo would be saved, showing people do care. As it is right now, you're saying not too many people are showing they care, via signatures or money donations. I agree, not too many people seem to care about old stuff anymore, only the 'new shiny' as you call it. Arecibo still has plenty of good use left, even old and rusty, if only people cared or could be motivated to care. |
