. . OK, if at 60 C or below you are still getting invalids then there is something else at work as well. I am not familiar with the needs of the GTX560s but I think you may have some driver issues to resolve. Maybe Wiggo can help you there .. he runs 560s.

Agreed.
What's the CPU temp look like?
Are you pushing a marginal power supply too far? I just had that happen, added a second 750ti to a box, had errors all over the place, replaced the PS and not a single error since. Was within limits, PS must have just been tired and 12v was weak.

Like me replacing one of my GTX 750Tis with a GTX 1070. Load on the PSU was still less than 50% of it's rating. 3 days later it was dead, and that horrible dead electronic device smell...
Did an autopsy & found one of the chopper output transistors split apart. Cause- the incredible amount of dust that had accumulated in the PSU heat sinks over the last 5 years. With the GTX 750Ti it probably would have lasted another 5 years, the extra load of the GTX 1070 was enough to push it over the edge.

Something to keep in mind when cleaning out the accumulated dust from the CPU & GPU fans and motherboard heatsinks- unless you've got lots of compressed air to blow back though the PSU, it's going to accumulate a similar amount of crud as the rest of the system unless you pull it out & physically disassemble it & clean out the dust that accumulates in there.

I have a question. Is there an ETA on when this silliness with the 100% CPU usage (when crunching on GPU) is going to end? I have a GTX 970 specially bought to crunch, instead of the CPU and now my brain hurts every time I see the full CPU core when crunching on GPU.

If you're planning on using the GTX 970 to crunch instead of the CPU, then it's no loss the CPU supporting the GPU is it?
You can run the SoG application without making full use of the CPU core, however it does a lot more work with the full support of that core.

EDIT- i'm pretty sure that by default the current SoG application supplied with the Lunatics v0.45 Beta 4 application minimises it's use of the CPU.

Just add -use_sleep to your comandline text file if you are on OpenCL.
This will reduce CPU usuage significantly but also reduce speed.

Yes, I count my blessing that I have a compressor in my shed, with a tank and blow nozzle. Amazing what 100 psi can dislodge! Not fun trudging through the snow in winter, but ...

. . Sorry to hear about your loss. But you make a very good point about cleaning the PSU as well as everything else.

Hi Songbird,

. . May I ask what you are running?? Stock? Lunatics? And CUDA or S0G? There are tweaks to release the CPU from the monopolistic grip of SoG if you want to.

. . For the GTX970 if you are running SoG, in the command line file in your BOINC data directory "Projects/Seti@Home" called "mb_cmdline_win_x86_SSE3_OpenCL_NV.txt" (there may be _S0G after the NV if you are running r3500) [you can edit it with a text editor like Notepad] add "-high_prec_timer -use_sleep" you will then find your CPUs are no longer wholly monopolised.

. . Yes Grant the default in r3500 should be -use_sleep but it doesn't hurt to have it in your commandline to be sure :)

. . Actually r3500 maximises GPU utilisation very well.

. . I would find that useful occassionally, but the pressure packs of compressed air can do a reasonable job too.

. . Just have to find someone who stocks them :)

At 58 C, it's not clear yet if I'm still getting invalids or not. GPU temperatures higher in early mornings than later in the day, though.

Afterburner usually shows fan speed at 100%, not changing when the computer's loudest fan switches to a higher speed.

It looks like time to try harder to look for dust inside the power supply.

. . If the fans are running at 100% all the time then it is doing everything it can to maintain the temp, so 58 is about as good as it gets unless you pump more airflow into the case. But 58 C should be fine for continuous operation of a GPU.

. . It sounds like pulling out the PSU and opening it up is the next step. I hope it solves the problem for you.

I opened the power supply and blew the dust out. No major concentration of dust there, so I also blew out any other dust I could find.

The 560 fan is at 100% but rather quiet, so I suspect that the loud fan was for something else. GPU temperature about 60 C.

CPU temperature is up to 77 C, so is there a similar program to provide a fan profile for the CPU? CPU tasks from other projects running on all but one of the CPU cores.

Rather open air path inside the case, with fans already at every place air should go out.

Probably at least 30 hours before I can tell if the invalids are gone.

I'm running lunatics 0.45 beta for SoG.(MB8_win_x86_SSE3_OpenCL_NV_SoG_r3500.exe). I did the command line thing. CPU dropped significantly. It's better but still nothing like the CUDA apps from before.

Thanks!

Hey Songbird,
Stephen will be able to help you with the specifics of the GTX970.
On my GTX750Ti: 4/gpu with cuda50 app is slightly better than 2/gpu with NV_SoG app (especially since there is no lag with cuda50).
On my GTX1060: 2/gpu with NV_SoG app is MUCH better than 4/gpu with cuda50 app.

My guess is: your GTX970 will be better off with 2tasks/gpu with NV_SoG ...if there is no lag and you need to use your rig at the same time

Keep in mind that all these differences are with running MrKevvy's app to optimize your CPU & GPU queues.

. . Hi again,

. . OK you speak of fans everywhere air should go out. But do any of them blow air into the case? You need to think of the case as an air stream like a wind tunnel. The optimum cooling is an air stream (usually front to back) bringing in cooler, denser air from in front of the case and expelling hot air from the rear. This achieves maximum air flow over the devices and maximum cooling. Maybe you need to change the flow direction of one (or more) fans. If there is no fan at the front of the case but there is a place to mount one, consider doing so. And I would put the most powerful fan at the front to maximise the air pressure within the case. But that is my way of doing things :).

All the fans (top and upper rear) are blowing air out. The inlets (near the bottom front, and a long thin one at bottom rear) have no good place to mount a fan.
