Well, something weird just happened an hour ago, and I'm not exactly sure what it was. The system was running real slowly, windows wouldn't change when alt-tabbing, just weird stuff, somewhat non-responsive, but seemed different than the normal lagging of the GUPPIs. After a boot, and then getting a white screen, and having to do a hard boot with the power switch, it came back up, and seems to be normal. But.. There are some weird messages in the startup screen:

It looks like it somehow killed a number of tasks when it rebooted, and it throttled back my downloads for about an hour or so, but then I just saw the message while putting this together that it received 100 tasks, so hopefully back to mormal? Bummer for sure, and not sure why those tasks were nuked, as they appeared to be running when I was watching it during it's weirdness. Well, I'll have to keep an eye on it, and won't run anything else but BOINC, and Emfers program. Strange stuff.

If anyone has thoughts as to why it nuked those tasks after rebooting, please feel free to chime in. I don't recall this happening before, and of course this rig has by far the most CPU cores I've ever had on one machine, so losing a chunk like that, although apperantly only temporarily, is something I'm hoping to avoid in the future.

If you look at your tasks page, you can see that 108 WUs errored out. That would limit you to 1WU per day. As each WU validates, the limit is raised (can't remember what the count is). Since you already had heaps of WUs pending validation, it didn't take too long for enough of them to be validated, and for the daily WU limit to be larger than the server side limit (100 WUs per device).

I'd check your system log to se if there is anything in there around the time you had to reboot the system, and in the hours preceeding that.
Something caused the system to become unresponsive, and when you did the hard reset a big chunk of your cache errored out (looks like 100 CPU & 8 GPU).

Might be worth running chkdsk on your drives, and maybe a memtest as well.

EDIT- I was having a lot of issues with Windows update sucking up CPU time prior to upgrading to Win 10, although it usually just resulted in some CPU WUs stalling due to not getting any CPU time.
Might be worth running Process Explorer to see if there's anything going on there as well.

Well, other than my massive pile 'o errors on the 9th when things went a little nuts with the reboot situation, I've only had a few that are showing up in emfers history tab since then:

That doesn't appear too bad, but do these error codes indicate a possible reason for them? Too high an overclock perchance? But if that was so, why just a few since that fateful nite a couple days ago? I would have thought they would be more consistently failing if so. Thoughts?

For my 1070 running Einstein (yes, a different case) in my overclocking work the primary symptom of excess memory clock seemed to be unrequested system reboot. The primary symptom of excess core clock has been computation errors. In my case these generally were detected as such during run time and early termination resulted.

In my years of toying with clock rates on GPUs, I've seen error rates as low as one every few weeks (that one was running stock--dropping it a little fixed it). When you are near the edge, a butterfly in China can nudge you over the edge just every now and again. If you push up a little, and this is really clock rate related, most likely the rate will go up--but the symptom may also change.

But I lack recent SETI substantial experience, and don't know whether the essentially zero rate of computation error I expect is the norm here or not.

Just wondering if anyone who has the same/similar cards to these has comparable results, or if I am running them under what they could be doing:

EVGA GTX 1080 FTW:

EVGA 980Ti FTW converted to a Hybrid setup:

Anything look out of the ordinary? I always like getting the most performance I can for the money spent on hardware, so I thought I'd bounce it off the community.

Well, the problem/opportunity I think I may see is the rather ordinary memory clock rate GPU-Z reports your system as running at. It appears likely you are running well under the claimed "10 GHz" GDDR5X speed for the card, which would, I think be reported as 2500 by GPU-Z. You are seeing 2257, so if you could see a means to push it back up to 2500 that would be a plus, and if there is overclocking headroom, you might get more.

On my GTX 1070, which is equipped with "8 GHz" GDDR5, I've used Nvidia Inspector command line with all CUDA work paused to command memory offset (with respect to nominal) for the P0 state with values up to nearly +1000 giving functionality at least in the short term. The excess memory clock failure symptom in my system has been disconcerting--the BOINC applications cease progressing, so power consumption plummets, and the system stops displaying anything, and won't resume in response to keyboard or mouse inputs, so that resetting or powering down are required. That is a bit awkward for exploring the real ceiling, but for the Einstein BRP6 work I run the benefit of running at +800 for memory (which I currently regard as comfortably safe, even with a room ambient temperature probably higher than yours) is substantial over stock. At this moment, my 1070 is running Einstein BRP6 with requested core clock offset for the P0 state of +180, yielding 2012.0 reported actual (varies with temperature, this is for a 74C GPU temp) while running BRP6, and memory clock offset for the P0 state of +800 yielding reported 2304.0 (does not vary with temperature). As mine is a 1070 these numbers are not what you should expect for the 1080 (running killer cooling), but illustrate the possible opportunity.

Memory overclocking the Maxwell2 and Pascal cards for distributed computing is different than for games, and made awkward by the fact that NVI, at least, won't directly set parameters for the P2 state (which is the state in which distributed computing runs), and setting parameters for the P0 state (which propagate to P2) can't be done when the part is running in P2.

Al, one thing I do notice is that you haven't put in a command line for the 1080.

But be careful when running multiple cards, they will each need to support it.

Here is the issue I am running into, which I mentioned previously in another thread, the fact that EVGA hasn't yet created a unified tool to manage both the 10x0 and 9x0 series cards, and if running both styles in one system, you have to pretty much choose the older Precision X 16 to be able to manage the 900 series cards, but it leaves a lot to be desired when trying to manage the 10x0 ones, though it appears to at least somewhat work. Here is a screen shot of my dilemma:

Notice how the numbers aren't even close in terms of GPU clock, and as to memory, well, who knows, Precision doesn't list it. If trying to manage a 10x0 series card, the Precision X OC is a much better tool, but then it does absolutely nothing to the 9x0 cards, other than a polite message saying that it only supports 10x0 cards... They aren't making things easy, and after talking with one of their support people, it doesn't sound like it will be resolved any time soon. So, seeing what you see above, what would you suggest I try setting the memory to on the slider, to get it to a more optimum setting? Thanks!

The power consumption: I think it should be over 60% TDP. I'm running one MB at a time per GPU.

Any thoughts as to how I might be able to boost it up to 60% or higher? Here is a shot of my current running tasks list:

Anything else I can post to help you see better what is going on here on this machine?

Al, one thing I do notice is that you haven't put in a command line for the 1080.

But be careful when running multiple cards, they will each need to support it.

Brent, what command line am I missing? Thanks!

Al,

Do you run SIV64X?

It gives a good listing of memory, temps, speeds, etc

Zalster, nope, never have heard of this before, is it an open source program?

Well, downloaded and extracted it, then ran the SIV64X.exe file, and it gave me the following:

Not sure how important the unsigned driver issue, but it did say that it wasn't going to allow it to install, though looking at the program, it appears that it is running fine on my laptop. Is this something I should be concerned about? It sure does have a ton of system info, as you said. Will install it on my 2 crunchers that are running currently, tomorrow morning. Thanks for the heads up on it, looks pretty comprehensive.

Well, for fun I installed another 980Ti into the system today, Windows complained about it, searched and installed the drivers that were already there (Windows is so bright sometimes...), and then said I had to reboot, as before that, programs like Precision complained that there was no supported hardware.

Rebooted, everything seemed to come up fine, BOINC auto started, and looking at the in progress tasks, I saw this:

Not sure why the 2nd 980Ti is only running one task, and using a different percentage of CPU compared to the other ones.

Here is my startup log in case it has anything that sticks out.

If you have any thoughts as to why it is unhappy with the new card and allowing it to run only one task instead of 4, I'd appreciate hearing them, I'm stumped.

*edit* Ok, this is weird, about 10 mins later I went in and found that somehow it has decided to start doing 4 tasks on all the cards. I looked at Precision, and noticed that my water cooled one was about 100mhz slower than the air cooled one, even though the water cooled was at 38 degrees and the air cooled was at 58. I had to bump up the voltage and the GPU clock offset a bit to get the water cooled one running at the same speed as the air cooled one. That makes no sense to me, I would assume that they are the same card, same chip, same specs, etc, so when I cranked them both up to 110%, why such a large diff in their speeds? I think this rig is haunted, and it's still over 2 months till Halloween... hmmm. Oh, and the water cooled one is now sitting at 33-34 running 4 tasks at 1447 mhz.

Not sure why the 2nd 980Ti is only running one task, and using a different percentage of CPU compared to the other ones.

Because it's using your settings for that astropulse task?

That's why it was using different settings.

Al, not sure why you are getting an unsigned driver message with SIV64. The app has always had a Microsoft validated signature in my experience. You might want to do a SAVE ALL dump and mail the files to Ray. That way he could investigate why your system is giving the error. I would think he would appreciate the dump since your system is so extreme in its computing capabilities. Gives him more data points for development. He releases a major version release like clockwork every month with daily betas. He is about finished up with the 5.12 betas and will likely release it as general release next week.

He is a very good developer and very responsive to problem issues.

I think SIV64 is the "cadillac" of system information utilities. Everything under the sun is exposed by the app. An absolute 'must-have' utility in my opinion.

Not sure, but edited org response, as it now is running 4 on all, but the cards were not running at the same speeds, when the Power and GPU temp targets were set the exact same, so I had to bump one up a bit to equal the other. Strange stuff.

Ok, I will try getting the latest version, then uninstall the old and install the new, and if it comes up again, I will look into sending him that file. Oh, and added SIV to my orig post about this problem, in case it helps.
