Well, instead of over-running the GPU Wars 2016: GTX1080 thread with my new build info and questions, I thought it would be more proper to start a new one with my experiences with both a large number of cores (48) and the new EVGA 1080 FTW. As I just put the order in to EVGA last night, and honestly don't know exactly when they will be shipping it, initially this thread will be about the 48 core build, and the things I run into in the process. I'd expect the 1080 to hopefully ship sometime next week, but it will get here when it gets here, I'm not going to sweat it. I'm interested in how this system runs when running 48 cores at once, as it is only a 2.2ghz proc, though it speeds up to 3.0 in certain situations. I just couldn't justify the cost of the 2.7/3.6ghz version, they were like 4x the cost if I remember correctly. And this is just a V2 version, I wouldn't even want to think about what the V3 or V4's would cost... Well, this is my newest addition, and I'm going to see how it produces for me with just the optimized app (using SSE3 this time, and AVX when I install the new card), feel free to check on in on it's progress as time goes on. Oh, and one thing I noticed right now, as it is using SuperMicro's OEM coolers, is that the temps are running between 43 and 54, with the vast majority running between 45-50. That is one of the benefits of running the 2.2 CPU (Coretemp says it is running at 99.4 watts currently, while crunching on all cores), it is 10-15w lower power draw than the 2.4, and I believe 35 or so watts lower than the 2.7. This is good, because I tried installing Speedfan, and it installed properly, it just doesn't allow me to control _anything_ unfortunately. I may ping SuperMicro next week, to see if they have any software controls which allow me to optimize the temps a bit by spinning up the fans. |

I may ping SuperMicro next week, to see if they have any software controls which allow me to optimize the temps a bit by spinning up the fans. I'd check the BIOS for fan speed control settings. Grant Darwin NT |

Interesting machine, but it doesn't seem to do much yet. Only one task finished, and waiting for validation. Well, it was only just born. Give it a few hours and it should start popping out 12WUs/hr (or more). Grant Darwin NT |

Yep, just a little sprout at this point. One interesting thing this board has is 4 PCI-E 16x physical and electrical slots, so potentially it could grind on 4 GPU's, but as was talked about in the other thread, the issue might be saturation of the memory subsystem. Well, it will be a fun experiment as it gets going. Looking at the 3(!) tasks that have been reported so far, the run times vary between about 50 minutes and 2 1/2 hours. No idea if this is good, bad or indifferent. |

well so far your times are about 3.5 times slower than my i5, lucky you have 32 cores. |

All WU's so far have finished early with -9 result_overflow. Add another one to that. Can you determine if all these results are coming from one CPU or both? I'd re-check you CPU temperatures, for both CPUs. Got a multimeter? I'd check the power supply voltages as well. I'd also run an Extended Memory Test. Click Start, type mdsched.exe in the Search box, and then press Enter. Choose whether to restart the computer and run the tool immediately or schedule the tool to run at the next restart. Windows Memory Diagnostics runs automatically after the computer restarts and performs a standard memory test automatically. If you want to perform fewer or more tests, press F1, use the Up and Down arrow keys to set the Test Mix as Basic, Standard, or Extended, and then press F10 to apply the desired settings and resume testing. Probably they really were real overflows. It's now coming in WU's run full time. Yeah, I just noticed a whole pile that completed came through. If that's the case, it looks like in the next few hours i'll be spitting out quite a few noisy WUs as well. EDIT- It's just odd that they all bailed out just before they finished crunching. It's finally got some Credit! 3 WUs validated. Now how the hell did he get 89.94 for a WU that ran for 15.51 seconds when a couple of WUs that ran for around 11,000 secs got 96 & 97 and then 113 for another 11,000sec runtime???? Grant Darwin NT |

Looks like normal AR tasks are running just a hair over 3 hours with the SSE3 app. Is that running all 48 threads or have you limited it to running fewer? Yippee for me... :-/ Oh well, it is 2 gens back (or is it 3, I thought I read that v5 is now out), plus it is their slowest model in the 12 core lineup. And I do have 48 cores (somewhat) hard at work, so we'll see how it goes over the next week or so till the vid card shows up. |

Nope, it's that you're kind of like me, and just find this a fun pasttime. :-) Plus, it's something a little out of the ordinary, and something brand new, at least once that video card arrives and is installed. Some ppl like to gamble, some ppl like to read books, others like to dive into video games. It's all about what you find interesting in life, I guess. :-) |

Oh, and the temps all look fine, and looking at the pile processing now, some are at 75% with a little under 2 hours of processing time, others are around 48-52% mostly at 1 hour 20some minutes, with a couple at 1 hour 40some minutes. And looking at my list, it appears that I just started my first Guppi task on here: 5/28/2016 9:01:27 PM | SETI@home | Starting task blc5_2bit_guppi_57451_23161_HIP63121_OFF_0014.19967.831.18.27.61.vlar_2 It is 22 minutes in with 8.7% completed, so about 4 hours looks to be a good estimate if it progresses in a linear fashion. |

I would have expected to see a much larger difference between the Run Time & CPU Time with 48 running. Looks like normal AR tasks are pretty solid between 2hr59min & 3hr6min. You could switch to the AVX app tomorrow to see how it runs. Unless you want to get more data on how VLARs run, but they normally track the same between the CPU apps.
