That's why I said in the Trump thread, that the jobs, the mainly blue collar workers that support Trump want back, will not be coming back. If the industry does come back it will be automated, and they, unless they get more education, are not qualified. Not even then... The carrying capacity of Earth for humans, AT THE LEVEL OF Somilia is a tad over 6 Billion... We are well over THAT mark. |

So why are we so short of the stuff? Ahh.. But money won't help when the stuff isn't there to buy. |

So why are we so short of the stuff? Which means that the economical law of supply and demand doesn't work when the supply is very low or the demand is very high. How about that for economical "science"? |

It's easy to speculate doomsday based on what we currently know, but I think all the economic worries about automation and computers and robots are not taking into account the inventions that may lie ahead that actually need people, and lots of them. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

if you want to guarantee a basic level of existence... the ancient romans gave everyone a daily allotment of free wheat. free bread and bed for everyone... if you want more it's on you to earn it. giving money could result in a bunch of bums just spending it all on drugs. |

if you want to guarantee a basic level of existence... the ancient romans gave everyone a daily allotment of free wheat. Bread and circuses. Roman satirical poet Juvenal (circa A.D. 100) Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses Maybe governments should give their citizens free meals and a TV set. |

Oh Clyde, I know, and you know, that I know you know the real truth in what you just claimed. Some modern people would be surprised at well received and how well the Roman social order worked for all concerned. Roman civilisation has provided the foundation for our present-day ideas of nationhood. edit: It is easy to see how an attractive idea can be more enticing than a necessary practise.... re-edit: Why tell the truth when a good lie will do. Gorden that is only true if Robots stay like they are now but when they get to the point that they can walk and have some basic Ai then there won't be many jobs or there won't be enough jobs . What you said is the con get everyone to think there is no problem with Robots as there will be new jobs we haven't invented yet . How come so many have degrees now but not all the people with said degrees can get jobs where they can use said degrees ???? man will have to change the way we do things and that will mean get rid of money or bring in socialist ideas like job shearing or some sort of payment . Capitalism wont work. I put it to you that this problem is one of the milestones a civilisation will have to solve to be a space fairing people . |

Totally Non-Capitalist Economies have been repeatedly tried. And have always failed.Actually no they have not failed. They were however unable to wage war to prevent capitalists from conquering them. |

Without Capitalism. So Clyde how do you solve the big problem of Robots ? If Robots start to do the work how are people going to get a job . The rich won't give a hoot and they will use Robots instead of people . So what is your answer to this problem ?????? |

Yes I do but it's beyond yours and others intellect to understand how it would work . But i'll give you a clue . You value the one thing that does not have a value but is considered the most valuable thing there is .. |

As far as the AI and robot speculation goes, it does seem like a growing problem, but the 20th century produced things nobody ever dreamed of, so who knows what's around the corner, and it could be an invention that needs people and lots of them. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

As far as the AI and robot speculation goes, it does seem like a growing problem, but the 20th century produced things nobody ever dreamed of, so who knows what's around the corner, and it could be an invention that needs people and lots of them yes that is true but who makes said products these days . Robots do most of the making already and those Robots can't even leave the factory so when they can then kiss all the jobs goodbye even the Butler and maids will be gonski. There is only one industry that will be able to resist the Robots the longest ..... Health care and mostly Aged health care. Everthing else is up for grabs for the Robots . And No it's not Love Another clue it's worth 1.4 million at the moment and going up based on average weekly earnings (Australian Figures that is) |

I think before anyone answers your question. You need to justify your statement as to why you think those countries were a success. |

Are you sure? Yep I'm not saying it won't happen it will I just reckon they will be able to keep more jobs than other industry will But it will happen . Bicentennial Man comes to mind when he's in the hospital and his nurse is a Robot near the end of it . |
