Message 1779237 - Posted: 15 Apr 2016, 6:27:57 UTC - in response to Message 1779186.

Inverse.com has published an article about our distribution of Breakthrough Listen data.

writing today about donating your "laptop CPU power" to SETi@home, when most laptops out there have a:
- intelHD or ATi Radeon Mobility HD with OpenCL
- nVidia CUDA based GPU
is equal to sacrilege!

Why?
Not only will they waste so much heat of CPU power...but will also get less performance from the CPU only SETi@home!

Posting those articles, even though it's a good thing about marketing, is a great misrepresentation of the "efficient donation of computational power"! Not to mention that it doesn't propagate some kind of program that regulates BOINC in accordance to temperature of the CPU & GPU (like Tthrottle for example)...

Guys, don't give amateurs to write those articles...laptops costs money & if someone fries the laptop by overheating it (during summertime, which is coming) - you'll get a NEGATIVE REFERENCE about SETi@home!
;)

Hi

There are options. You can adjust the calculation to not load the iron to redness. :)

This is what I did, everything works fine and the PC settings within the normal range.

Volunteers! turn on more brain :))

Hello
The question that bothers me. And the search for extraterrestrial intelligence we can't create problems for yourself and everyone on the planet? when we find when they arrive?

P. S. sorry for bad English. it's a machine translation.

I minus my boinc manager before I close the lap top and it seems to still keep going and no heat coming off of it!

My HP laptop is crunching vLHC@home, Einstein@home searching for gravitational waves and SETI@home on Green Bank data. No smoke coming out of it.

Same for my 2 previous HPs and the Asus I'm using now.

I'm just on BOINC v8 through a notebook.
I only had a task on Breakthrough/Listen, everything's back to normal.

Does it have something to do with the credits or team?

My over 10 years old Pentium M based laptop is also still fine (well except for the hard drive, which has some small issues recently, but that's not because of BOINC but because of soon 52000 hours of being on).

Well, this article is written for "average" users, so they have to keep it simple, otherwise most of those users will just say "it's too complicated for me". And than if you tell them, they will burn their computer it they don't install another program, that monitors the temperatures, pretty much not one of them will try. I mean, an average user does not even know, what temperatures are OK for a CPU or a GPU. And he/she actually does not need to know it, any "modern" CPU/GPU will throttle itself, if it gets too hot. Sure, running close to max. temperature isn't optimal for 24/7 SETI crunching, but that's probably also not what the average user will do.

My 750 TI took 3 weeks to double the 6 years' worth of What I Did Before, going back to a Pentium III.

Now I have a 980 and I should have doubled all *that* in about 1 more month, been at it 2.

It's like, why bother? Each additional thing is so much greater than what was before.

Also, with newer CPUs having low power idle modes, choosing to put "spare cycles to work" now comes with additional cost.

It's like you could shut the whole project down, wait until 2025, and start it up again and be only 4 months behind where you otherwise would be.

It has been a while since I used the "out of box" defaults.
But the concern raised here could be easily addressed by having a default setting on first instal of 50% cpu 50% ram.

If the user is good enough in computer knowledge, they can tweak it from there.

Side note:
It costs me $300+- a month in the winter to heat my house with a furnace.
I have issues keeping the house warm let alone comfortable.

- so -

I run Seti@home on 2 server systems (Dell r900 and Apple Xserve)
I have the server's exhaust fed through a heating vent on one side of my house (reverse air direction).

Furnace shut off and breaker switched off, running these 2 servers at full Seti speed, my house stays a comfortable 70-75F at less than $80 a month.

Hows that for positive Seti news? :-)

well, no...CPU are inefficient about crunching data for SETi@home & GPU gets more job done...we have been down that road before...check out the stats for a number of GPUs & total RACs...

no you can't manage the GPU time for calculations...while BOINC time you can!

but even though my CPU run on 100% & with TThrottle they are doing about 80°C now...posting them to go up to 85°C tops! But even that not going to fry XEON which has a Tjunc on 100°C...

on GPUs that I have, both of them work on 100% load...GT520 on single WU, while GT730 gets dual-WUs...both of them can go up around Tjunc 130°C, ubt they are nicely cool at 60°C!

anyway, need a "fail-safe" if another fan fails on GPU...or sthg else happens, so that my GPU is slowed down to crawl & protected...like it's done with TThrottle?!

I have installed a Geforce GTX 750 OC in this Windows PC and it runs both SETI@home and Einstein@home GPU tasks, getting 4400 credits each Einstein tasks on Parkes XMT data. But CERN programs don't use GPUs and use instead VirtualBox on CPUs. I am running 6 of them, including beta projects on this Windows 10 PC and 2 Linux boxes. Green Bank data so far suck on all 3 of them.

You can believe me both CERN and SETI have computers that can process information for beyond what vollunteers can achieve, but that's not the point anyway.
Everyone's already connected, and the breakthroughs in hi-tech gear is moving faster everyday.

The objective is to create a global network to send signals out into deep orbit, but satellites aren't enough for the distances involved.

We need astronauts, physicists, mathmatecians, and continous research on terraforming, new kinds of fuel that work better in deadspace etc. but we have problems here on earth as well, if you just look to the stars you'll just wind up breaking your neck.

If everyone was a bit less uptight about sharing information, we'd probably be further along, but that's no reason to stop.

The article regarding breathrough data was a great step to make things more user friendly, and connect more dots for SETI in particular. But this is just a small step in a very steep ladder, because as you can imagine, outer space isnt the kind of problem you can figure out in a week. Neither are we as a species. I asked a very simple question in this topic and no one cared to give me a few lights, but I mnanaged. Everyone's so gung-ho to show off their credits and cyber-fantasies. Well, teach people, for a change, it doesn't hurt.

Amd if the sun's out go take a walk, if you grow up in a cubicle you'll forget the world outside of it. ;)

Finally 2 Guppi vlar ended in reasonable times on my Opteron 1210 Linux box and are waiting for validation. Maybe it was only teething trouble. like that for LHCb on vLHCathome-dev.
