Nice piece on Yuri Gagarin going away:

Thanks for the link! Interesting read.

A wonderful gift to Yuri.
And to everyone else at SETI, and everyone working towards a better world, and finding something else outside of our little blue dot.

Best wishes from Portugal.

I'm terribly sorry to read about your kitty. Surely ultra advanced aliens somewhere out there, don't have to live with such awful things happening. Maybe someday, we'll get really really really lucky, and such aliens will radio us an advanced science which yields immortality. I can wish anyways.

Thank you for your kind thoughts.

Does the "_OFF_" indicate an observation taken off-target to give an induction of the local background?

Yes, the off targets are nearby spots off of the primary target. There are still stars within the field of view of course, so we might find something in an OFF observation. In the near future we will be replacing the OFF positions with a catalog of secondary targets.

It looks like there isn't any astropulse for the breakthrough data? Is that due to the data itself or is there another reason?

The VLARs go out to ATI GPUs, but are held back from NVIDIA. If I could find a way to send VLAR to only NVIDIA OpenCL and not NVIDIA CUDA, I would...

Here's to hoping someday someone can figure out a way to make that happen. In the meantime, looks like the need for some CPU heavy rig building.

I'll have to look at it that if the work that my NVidia GPUs do frees up CPUs and AMDs to do the work to make The Great Discovery, it's still worth it... I'll be happy if anyone makes it. :^)

Is it possible to label all the VLAR GPU workunits for Nvidia as requiring a full CPU core as well as a GPU? That should make sure these workunits get all the CPU time they need.

Also you might want to look at the messages clients send to the server when requesting GPU workunits for an Nvidia GPU - I'd expect some difference so that servers would know not to send OpenCL workunits to the older Nvidia GPUs that can handle CUDA but not OpenCL.

Astropulse hasn't yet been implemented for the GBT data, but will be.

To be able to run VLARs on my Nvidia GPUs I'd live with a "health warning" as suggested by Mr.Kevvy. Although I suspect some would just ignore the warning and moan like crazy.

Enstein@Home, rather than using app_info.xml to set the <count> parameter, has it in the project preferences as follows:

GPU utilization factor of BRP apps
DANGEROUS! Only touch this if you are absolutely sure of what you are doing!
Wrong setting might even damage your computer! Use solely on your own risk!
Min: -1.0 / Max: 1.0 / Default: 1.0

This seems to mitigate the moaning, so a similar caveat would certainly be sufficient here where there's less chance of overheating/hardware damage.

(My Linux machines have both CUDA and OpenCL. If they were given GUPPI VLARs, wondering how it is determined which of the two would pick them up.)

When I was running GTX470's 3 WU per card 1 VLAR would give slight stuttering, 2 VLAR's almost froze the machine and 3 WU's would crash the machine and trash the WU's.

Raistmer's SoG is looking promising, although it does need almost a full CPU core for each work unit.

However, since the only reason I am running any CPU core for work are the VLARs, then I am upgrading from the CPU to the GPU which then takes the run time from ~1 hr down to about 14 minutes.

So I don't mind "trading" that core for the GPU as I know I am getting better efficency out of that core now.

I think Mr. Kevvy is right, it should be an option to for the person if they want to run the VLARs on their GPU.

Since the core is going to get used anyway, why not use it the most efficient way to crunch those VLARS?

My 2 cents.....

Awesome! Just a quick question. Any way to get back our own custom screensaver wallpaper if we had added that?

I thought I had arranged things so it would still use custom wallpaper if you had it. Did I screw that up?

System memory use looks normal, and other concurrent and subsequent tasks seem fine. Unclear to me if it's complaining about the just finished Guppi, the just started Guppi (which finished and uploaded normally) or the just started MB, which is currently continuing to crunch normally ...

The *guppi*.vlar's or also the normal .vlar's go to AMD/ATI GPUs?

The normal .vlar tasks lasts 4 times more, the *guppi*.vlar tasks lasts 3 times more - than a mid-AR task (on one of my four FuryX VGA cards) - (I'm a SETI-Beta tester).

If the AMD/ATI GPU PCs have good luck and get just this *guppi*.vlar tasks, their RAC will decrease /3, if also the normal .vlar tasks then the RAC will decrease /4. Not funny.

One of my FuryX calculate a (*guppi*).vlar task, in this time the card could calculate (3) 4 mid-AR tasks.

The nVIDIA GPUs don't get (*guppi*).vlar tasks...

It's not about Credits (only).
I (the most members here also) use the RAC for to compare (members/PCs/teams).

This would be like the AMD/ATI VGA card user do the 'dirty work' and the nVIDIA VGA cards are protected for them, that's like cherry-picking.
Fairness, equality?

If it ever would work, that the SETI server send the (*guppi*).vlar tasks to nVIDIA's OpenCL app and not to the CUDA app, the APR (average processing rate) of the OpenCL app will go so down, that the server 'use' just the CUDA app for the PC... with the result that no (*guppi*).vlar tasks will be send to the PC - or?

It's not possible to send the (*guppi*).vlar tasks just to CPUs?

I'm disappointed, I have set SETI in BOINC to 'no new tasks'.
I don't know when, or if I will set it again to 'allow new tasks'.
I'll follow the process and decide then...

I'm very sad (a hardcore SETIzen). :-(

Hi everybody, i have just joined seti@home project hopefully my little PC can help out.

Love to hear from people? i am based in the UK near Manchester not to far from
Jodrell Bank Radio telescope.

Don't know what i am really doing with the seti program yet or how it works correctly, i just leave it to run when away from my PC, so some help would be appreciated?

Many thanks

well your GTX750 could likely use some tweaking to get more out of it.
I will leave that to those that are more familiar with the card.

I have a Geforce GTX 750 OC. Every time I allow SETI@home I get about 30 GPU tasks for it on my Windows 10 PC and they are done very quickly. If I connect to Einstein@home I get 3 GPU tasks, all crunching Parkes data, and they last longer, but give me 4400 credits each.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, each project individually determines what constitutes "work" and how they choose to award credit to reward that work. All you can do is to develop your own benchmarks to see which projects and applications "pay better", if that's your motivation for doing this.
Like with credit, the applications being run and the data being crunched are also unique to each project, and may be more or less efficient on either CPU or GPU than those of other projects. It seems to me, as a relative newbie, that SETI attracts the most interest, and thus presumably the best talent when it comes to developing applications. Presumably, best talent = most productive applications.
Hope this answers your question?

Welcome Darren

Take some time and read the posts especially from Project staff like Eric.. Your Boinc Manager will handle things pretty well until you get a grip on things and fine tune

Hang in there chances now with the new data sets and sources are better than ever..
