TB kills three people every minute – the world must wake up to this pandemic

The leading cause of death from infectious disease worldwide, tuberculosis (TB), is associated with immigration in the UK. There, I’ve said it. Now let’s move on because no Donald Trump-esque wall or Brexiteer is going to keep TB out. Perhaps we should ban all migration? Quite frankly that is a ridiculous notion; one that someone with even the most isolationist of stances would struggle to justify.

Some might argue that we could extend our current TB screening policy (people wishing to move here from countries where TB is common are checked pre-entry) to incorporate testing and treatment for the silent or latent form of the disease, but this would not cover the millions of people who come to the UK for up to six months on a tourist visa. Not to mention the ethical considerations. In any case, there is currently no effective way to treat the latent form of multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB). So, to my mind, there really is just one choice – we must tackle TB on a global scale and that means overseas investment.

Zika Count Rises to 215 in Singapore


Singapore reported another big batch of Zika virus cases Sunday, bringing its total count in just a week to 215, and World Health Organization officials said the spread of the virus definitely still constitutes a global health emergency.

Zika's apparent quick spread out of Latin America and in Asia and Africa has WHO officials worried. They have no idea if the virus will spread as explosively as it has in the Americas, and they cannot predict if it will cause a fresh wave of birth defects and side-effects such as the paralyzing Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Two new cases in Spain of potentially fatal Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever

Health authorities in Spain have identified two new possible cases of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), two days after the virus claimed its first casualty in western Europe.

Two women were on Friday evening placed in isolation wards in Madrid hospitals after showing symptoms of the deadly virus which is endemic to the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.

The virus is transmitted to people either by tick bites or through contact with infected blood or other bodily secretions. Initial symptoms are a headache, fever, aching muscles and neck or back, dizziness, plus possible vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and a sore throat, followed by mood swings and depression. Finally, the liver is affected and bleeding rashes appear on the skin, mouth and throat. Severely ill patients may experience kidney, liver or lung failure after around five days of showing symptoms.

No Zika cases from Olympics, says WHO

The World Health Organization has said there have been no confirmed cases of Zika among travellers or athletes at the Rio Olympics.

The WHO said its prediction that the Games would not fuel the spread of the Zika virus was being proved correct.

Zika update:

Mosquitoes test positive for Zika in South Beach

For the first time in the U.S., mosquitoes trapped in a zone where Zika virus is being actively transmitted have tested positive for the virus.

Three Zika-positive moquitoes were sampled in South Beach, where a 1.5-square mile zone has been designated as an area of active transmission of the virus, The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services confirmed Thursday morning. One of the areas with a positive test is the Miami Beach Botanical Garden.

Singapore has confirmed 41 cases of locally-transmitted Zika virus, mostly among foreign construction workers, and said it expected more cases to be identified.
