We're raising money to support our undergrads to build hardware to search for ET. We'd love for you to help at https://crowdfund.berkeley.edu/project/1704. Perks at the higher levels include a roundtable with BSRC Director Dr. Andrew Siemion, tours of our UC Berkeley labs, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Green Bank Telescope. Or you can just bask in the warm fuzzy glow of helping out our undergrads. Every donation counts!

i think this is great, but in addition you need to set up a permanent fund for the same thing so that your students can come back and new students can join.
now where do i donate i do not have 10,000 yet but i am working on it and will give what i can for this very good cause.

Yes indeed a noble initiative, but there is no way to physically donate any money.

The "Claim" buttons on the right.

Well there's my annual contribution; was waiting for a need... and finally achieved a lifelong goal of being in a peer-reviewed published scientific research paper. Unfortunately I had to buy my way in, but that will have to do. ;^)

And I loved this part:

But we still suffer by association with the tin foil hat brigade, who post shaky videos of unidentified lights in the sky to YouTube, write polemics about how the government are hiding alien spacecraft at Roswell, and circulate kooky manuscripts about how ET built the pyramids.

About time!

Are you kidding, we give you the power of our computers, and you have enough nerve to ask us for money ???
I think this is the audacity

I assume you are unaware that SETI@Home relies mostly on donations to carry out its work.

"There is currently no government funding for SETI research, and private funding is always limited. Berkeley Space Science Lab has found ways of working with small budgets and the project has received donations allowing it to go well beyond its original planned duration, but it still has to compete for limited funds with other SETI projects and other space sciences projects."

That's excellent, John. I remember you were also the final donor for my fundraiser for the GBT GPUs... your generosity is amplified by the fact that your donations aren't tax-deductible as mine are (are they?)

Now that I am certain of someone picking up a "special" star I can see what it is like; I may want one too. :^)

I am not sure if this was meant to be humorous or not. I think it was serious but some forms of humor just don't carry well on forums. It is not like they demanded money, held his family for ransom or anything like that. It was a simple request for donations that could be totally ignored if you didn't wish to be involved. As for thanks for his contributions, we all have supported each other in that, both for those of us who done a small or huge amount. It isn't how much credits you make as how much you involve yourself. Those making 100 credits a day should feel no less important than a person making 100K a day. There is no pay check and we do it for our own sense of contributing to the science.

If he quits it isn't about the lack of thanks or the donations it is about him not getting any satisfaction with the project. IMHO

Off my soap box
Sometimes I wonder, what happened to all the people I gave directions to?

Have donated 250, wonder how my "special" star will look like :)

I have also been trying to donate $250, but all I get is the page where you give your personal address details and then it sayds thankyou, and just sits there. I have tried Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Google Chrome browsers, all get the same response. There seems no way to put any credit card details in. All I can do is donate the money via the usual avenues and If I miss out on a special star then so be it :-(

Had no problem here, after filling in personal info I came to the pay info and used visa, got email confirmation of my donation.

Not sure but as I read it, I will first get the star sometime in may, and then it's too late donating...

For me, "thanks" - it is a little new information about intelligent life, inspite of humanity. You said your words as SETI make you to heavy using of your PC ;)

I noticed that possibly because this campaign uses crowdfund.berkeley.edu rather than give.berkeley.edu that the donation doesn't seem to cross over to our profile... mine still shows the same number and amount of donations as before I donated, and this means that our regular "little green star" probably won't appear or be extended by it (is this correct?)

Matt may have to do some manual fiddling once the crowdfunding campaign completes, but we'll endeavor to make sure everyone gets credit. Thanks Mr. Kevvy for your very generous donation and to the rest of you who have contributed. We really appreciate all donations, however large or small, whether they are of money, or of your computing resources. We couldn't do this without you!

Chris, thanks for trying to donate! Did you succeed in the end? If not, maybe try again, and if it still fails would you mind letting me know the versions of the browsers you are using? Thanks!

Thanks for noticing. :^) Glad it's over the $5K threshold for at least a basic setup.

I see we have passed our funding goal and have 3 hours left!

Way to go, and it looks like 10 people will be getting a fancy star.
