I've been away from SETI@Home for quite a while, but found my old account and joined 4 machines on today. Immediately something odd happened (and I'm only posting it here because it happened with 2 of the windows machines). 2 computers are both reporting (on the site) as Computer 7969060 The tasks that almost immediately changed to "abandoned" are currently being worked by the first machine, and I don't think it has any idea that they're considered "abandoned" on the server end. Every now and again I'll reload the page and the specifications for 7969060 keep reverting back to one machine (an AMD processor) and the other (and Intel box). I have *no idea* what happened or even how to begin fixing it. Any suggestions? |

Well, the "original" 7969060 isn't reporting any completed and reported tasks as anything but "abandoned", so in the absence of any other guidance, I'm going to detach it, remove anything I can find referencing a SETI account on that machine and try attaching to the project again. |

Looking at your stats page you have four PCs, one AMD and three Intel based, each has its own ID, and all are showing work in progress. One of the Intel PCs has a number of "abandoned" tasks, mostly for its Intel GPU - http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=7969060... It looks as if whatever the problem was it has now cleared, but I would keep a close eye on that Intel machine that is throwing errors. Yes, unfortunately, um... look again. I detached the i3-4130, found everything that might reference it in regards to SETI on it's boinc installation and deleted it, then re-attached. It immediately assumed the identity of the AMD machine again. (So it now looks like I have two identical machines) I've never seen anything like this happen in ~12 years of using BOINC. |

Great... now it just chucked all of the tasks on the other, other computer into abandoned status. That one is sitting at home, so I can't even actually abandon those for an hour or two. I'm starting to think I'm just going to detach both of them and I'll just leave the couple attached that appear to not freak out every time I try to do anything with them. If anyone knows how to detach a machine and remove all reference to a project (so it can attach as a completely new machine) just let me know. I'm at the end of my rope. |

Well, now your AMD based machine has vanished from you list. This is a very strange sequence of events. One reason for all those abandoned tasks is that there is no ADMD GPU/APU on an Intel processor - How exactly are those two PCs connected, or are you "file shuffling" between them? What PCs do you have - your account inf page lists four? all Intel based. First, stop fiddling around with the hardware and let BOINC and SETI run for a day or so. On each PC use the BOINC "advanced view" to monitor what is going on. Stop trying anything fancy, like copying data files etc between your machines, this will cause no end of problems. STOP detaching at the first sign of a problem, that is a last ditch resort and may have actually contributed to your problems. I never did anything "fancy". The sequence of events is precisely this: 1. I attached the I3. Waited for it to get a couple WUs. Watched them for a few minutes. 2. I connected BOINC manager to the Xeon E3 machine and attached it. Pretty much did the same. 3. Went home for lunch about 90 minutes later. 4. Used BOINC manager to attach AMD machine at home (it's not showing up, but it's the one with an AMD video card, hence the AMD tasks) (I figured out later that at this point it marked all the I3's tasks abandoned and "became" the same Computer number) 5. Used BOINC manager to attach Xeon X5355 machine. 6. Went back to work and decided to see how things looked and what tasks were done. 7. Discovered I only had 3 computers. 8. Detached I3, removed the SETI account XML file, re-attached it. 9. Discovered it had then attached to the same Computer number as the AMD machine at home and marked all of it's tasks at "abandoned". 10. Got very frustrated, detached I3. 11. Went home at the end of the day, detached AMD. These were two computers sitting at two different locations, attached using two different BOINC managers and the only things they shared in common were my fingerprints on the keyboards. There is literally nothing else I did. No files copied, etc. I have no idea how BOINC considered them to be the same machine (it hasn't happened on any of the 3 other projects they run), but it did. Repeatedly. |

Are you using a shared data folder for a couple of your computers? Just now SETI is listing FOUR computers as having been active in the last 30 days: ID: 7969063 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1220L V2 @ 2.30GHz [Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9] (4 processors) --- Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 x64 Edition, (06.03.9600.00) last contact 2 Apr 2016, 8:39:38 UTC ID: 7969121 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5355 @ 2.66GHz [Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 11] (4 processors) NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 (2047MB) OpenCL: 1.2 Linux 4.2.0-34-generic last contat 2 Apr 2016, 5:32:16 UTC ID: 7969218 Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4130 CPU @ 3.40GHz [Family 6 Model 60 Stepping 3] (4 processors) INTEL Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400 (1982MB) OpenCL: 1.2 Microsoft Windows 10 Professional x64 Edition, (10.00.10586.00) last contact 1 Apr 2016, 20:59:51 UTC ID: 7969060 Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4130 CPU @ 3.40GHz [Family 6 Model 60 Stepping 3] (4 processors) INTEL Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400 (1982MB) OpenCL: 1.2 Microsoft Windows 10 Professional x64 Edition, (10.00.10586.00) Last contact 1 Apr 2016, 20:12:47 UTC No sign of an AMD processor (CPU or GPU) in that lot (and a "detached" computer would show up). What you are describing can be explained if you are using a shared data folder for the i3 and the "AMD" - I'm still trying to get my head around what ther hardware of those two is. Two of your computers, the Linux box and the one running server 2012 appear to be running OK. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Are you using a shared data folder for a couple of your computers? No. In fact I wouldn't even have a clue how I would do that. Especially for two machines that don't even sit on the same LAN. I will try tomorrow to re-attach the I3 and then I'm just leaving it at that. I really hadn't planned on attaching the AMD (w/AMD GPU) anyhow, but I mistakenly thought I had the Boinc Manager controlling the Linux Xeon machine when I joined the project. Since my intention was just to have the 3 intel machines connected anyhow, that's how things will (hopefully) wind up. There were a total of FOUR computers attached yesterday and I am happy that two of them appear to be working completely normally. All I can tell you for sure is that every time those other two (very) different machines would update, they were changing the same Computer ID on SETI@Home and I can't think of anything (special, unusual, odd, different) that I did to cause it. If you think I can help in any way by investigating further, I'll be glad to, but I really don't know how to do much other than install BOINC on various machines and get them running. I've never done anything beyond some basic troubleshooting over the years. |
