Nice to see you again Archae! Thanx for dropping by :)

Any chance there's a DanNeely over @Einstein? Huge fan of his from the AnandTech forums (though I don't comment over there, just binge-read). I know he's a BOINCer... be nice to have his insight @SETI too :)

----

@Jason

When you say "throttling"... You mean from Turbo down to normal/reference clocks right? Or have u seen reports of clocks going down into the triple digits?

Some things I saw briefly, such as JayZ2cents, seemed to indicate down to base (but have to watch that one again to be sure, as was preoccupied). Another seemed to indicate right down to crash inducing levels, though I suspect they were punishing the card somehow... will have to find and watch them again to see the conditions properly.

[Later:] eVGA SC 1080 with ACX 3 cooler apparently $50 cheaper, and didn't appear to be throttling. Both founders cards,

ASUS custom 1080 available June 4, USD $619.95, USD $639.95 for factory OC:

http://pcdiy.asus.com/2016/05/this-is-the-asus-strix-geforce-gtx-1080-pascal-on-another-level/

I suspect that 4 June date (mentioned at bottom of article) set by manufacturer agreement, and is when we will see multiple custom 1080's actually being sold.

Looking at the eVGA website.

Founders Edition uses Nvidia stock cooler,
1,607 Base & 1,733 Boost clocks.

SC Gaming ACX 3.0 using their dual ball bearing fans,
1,708 Base & 1,847 Boost clocks.

Interestingly they haven't bumped up the memory clock at all over the Founder's Edition; still 10GHz, 320GB/s bandwidth.

I must be getting old- I just can't see the point in having LEDs all over your video card (or memory modules etc). Then again I never could see the point in doing burnouts in a car even when I was young.

Only one model left as I type this; the other four are back to email notification.

ASUS is releasing new models 6/4, so I'm sure there will be many to choose from in a week.

I'd want to get a pair of 1070 Hybrids from EVGA, time will tell on this.

All now on Notify, though this is interesting, EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW GAMING ACX 3.0 - P/N: 08G-P4-6286-KR, it shows the Base/Boost (clock) specs as TBD/TBD. Must be so fast that they had to bring in new hardware to test it! lol

Was anyone realy able to put one 1080 to work on S@H?

If yes, please share with us the host so we could follow their real performance.

Weelll, I managed to snag one of those that I had linked to in the previous post, that I am going to be putting into my new 48 thread machine that I'm finalizing the assembly of right now. It should be up and crunching this morning, sans any GPU, as I am going to do the video install fresh with nothing previous to interfere with it, hopefully it will all go smoothly. It is shipping via 2 day, but I have no idea what the actual shipping date is going to be, though I heard mention of June 4 somewhere, so that would be good, though of course, earlier is always better! :-)

I am going to be installing BOINC and SETI on it in a little bit, does anyone have suggestions about anything special I should know about, seeing as it will initially have no GPU crunching, but soon will be crunching on a 1080? Optimized apps a good idea for the initial 48 core setup? Hold off till the GPU is installed and just run stock? This is new ground for me, the high core count, and obviously when the 1080 arrives, that'll be new ground for everyone. Love to hear some suggestions about the best way to configure this one.

Well, maybe in a dozen years or so, somebody might send the kitties one as a hand me down....LOL.
As most of you know, I spend most of my money just keeping what I have here supplied with electric juice.

It has been suggested that I shut down everything for a couple of months and then afford to upgrade./

And maybe I should.

You know Mark, that actually honestly might not be a bad idea, for a few reasons. Summer is coming, and I believe you mentioned somewhere IIRC that you scale back your crunching in the summer somewhat due to the heat (me too), as well as all the credit and especially processing issues with the new WU's. Maybe if you had a little down time, got together some newer hardware with the $ you'd be saving on the electric bills, possibly by the time late summer or early fall rolls around, some of these kinks might be worked out? And your power bill might even go down a little with the more efficient hardware! :-O hehe

Just a friendly suggestion, though I can imagine the thought of it, after the dedication you've put into this project, might seem like you'd be ripping your left arm off (maybe?), but it may be a pleasant distraction for a little while, plus it's always fun to get new toys every now and then. Just a thought from the cheap seats. :-)

The first numbers of actual crunching times of the 1080 final apears, at least on E@H.

Just not sure they are so impressive as expected.

Not surprising, I suppose. Think that it may have been over promised in the marketing, or maybe just needs a bit more optimization in the drivers and the app?

Apps say Beta Cuda55 ? probably some debug code and hard synchronisation in there.

Einstein has a fairly optimized app to begin with. (that Beta cuda 55 we are all running)

I looked at his complete times.

It is relatively faster than 980Ti, gives about a 3 minute decrease in time to complete.

What we need is a test here at Seti.

Too early to say, but 4 WU in 8000 secs is only 10% faster than a 390X running 1 at a time, far away from the promissed bost on performance, something else must be happening.

Maybe 4 WU at a time is too much due the I5 CPU who actualy feed the GPU. Who knows.

Possible. Also founders card is known to throttle in some situations, and Cuda55 is not going to be aware of the Pascal Architecture at all. Probably they need to use 7.5/8 and 64 bit for this (assuming not a thermal or bottlenecking issue elsewhere)
