i'd run memtest for 6 or more hours to see if there's a bad bit ...ntoskernel errors are usually hardware related but can also caused by rootkits Greetings Zombu2, I have run Memtest86 overnight several times since getting this new RAM several months ago and no problems have come up regarding RAM. My first post yesterday lists everything I have done to figure this out. The only HDD I have power down is the drive that holds all my data and stuff that I don't want on the system disk. Nothing accesses that drive unless I am doing it. The OS does no access that drive. But, on seeing your suggestion about the minidump ... 050316-19312-01.dmp 5/2/2016 10:09:48 PM KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR 0x0000007a fffff6fc`40009b20 ffffffff`c000000e 00000003`33ce8860 fffff880`01364760 Ntfs.sys Ntfs.sys+148760 x64 ntoskrnl.exe+74ec0 C:\Windows\Minidump\050316-19312-01.dmp 8 15 7601 396,640 5/3/2016 3:21:39 AM ... I see that the "Caused By Driver" shows Ntfs.sys. That is for the file system and that has not been in any previous minidumps. Wait a minute, I just checked and I did have one show up back in November last year. After running Memtest86 and getting booted up I ran SFC and it reported nothing was corrupted. This may sound like a dumb question; I'm just not sure about the format workings of CDs and DVDs. Does ntfs.sys have anything to do with the format of CDs and DVDs? This PC ran for 35 days plus without an optical drive in it. I had my new USB portable DVD writer attached when the BSoD occurred the other night. When I had my internal SATA drive attached, Window$ would lose sight of the drive now and again. This also happen before I rebuilt this PC with a new motherboard and CPU and with the same drive. I would have to futz with the SATA cable to get Window$ to see the drive again; I would move it to a different connector. Well, I have other things to do now, like mow the lawn. :( I hope this helps to get me pointed to the culprit responsible for these BS0Ds. Thanks Zombu2! :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Greetings Grant, The problem may (or may not) be the CPU, but it could also be the motherboard voltage regulators. If they start to fail, all sorts of weirdness can result. What to trust? I use CoreTemp (although I think the current versions come with loads of Crapware). CPUID HWMonitor gives overall system temperatures, and it's CPU temperature readings match those of Core Temp (at least on my system). Grant Darwin NT |

Greetings, Ok, this is weird. I have an "after market" non-Micro$oft solitaire game that I play now and then. I noticed several days ago that the end game animation quit working when I would win. I just won a game and the animation is back. I do not see how this could have a bearing on the BSoD issue. Here's what I'm gonna do for now: I will allow the PC to run continuously. When the solitaire program stops doing the animation, I will reboot at that time. Unless, I get a BSoD beforehand of course. ;) And I will only plug the DVD writer in when I will be using it. We'll see what transpires. :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Has the weather warmed up at all? Possibly heat related? Greetings Grant, The weather has been in the low to mid 40s at night and high 40s to low to mid 50s day time. The CPU has been running warmer than with my old liquid cooler. I believe that is due to the pump heat sink not being absolutely flat. When I first installed it and ran it it was high 60s C low 70s C. I pulled the system to reverse the radiator fan and saw that there was a large section of the center not coming into contact with the heat spreader on the CPU. I cleaned both parts and put a dab of Arctic Silver on and the temps now run from low 60s C to about 71 C. I researched lapping the heat sink to get it flat but lack some stuff needed to do the job. A piece of granite counter top is ideal for this because it is flat. I'm thinking about just rebooting the PC every morning just for GP. I don't think we have a hair dryer. Your suggestion seems a bit intense to pull off not to mention time consuming. Not that what I have already done is not time consuming, just that there seems to be a lot of disassembly/assembly testing involved. There is something else that just came to mind. And this makes me think maybe mother board problem? In the past I have seen a message pop up stating that a USB port has been over powered. I'm thinking this could be board or driver issue. I have not been able to figure out which port is at issue. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I'll contemplate them and see about going that route. Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Has the weather warmed up at all? Possibly heat related? Do you have a spare power supply that you could try? EDIT- do you have a hair dryer? If you're able to remove the power supply from the computer case you can then use the hair dryer to heat up the PSU to see if that has any effect. If no effect, give the PSU a minute or 2 to cool down then try heating the onboard regulators on the motherboard. No effect, give them a chance to cool down & try heating the memory modules. No effect, let the memory modules cool down & try heating the CPU. Grant Darwin NT |

Greetings, Uptime: 35 days and 6 - 10 hours Event.: BSoD I just got a USB mobile DVD writer yesterday and connected it to the PC. Window$ recognized the new drive. I installed the included software. No problem. Just after 10pm Central last night, BAM! Another BSoD. Upon reboot, the POST told me that a "New CPU was installed" and I needed to go into Setup, which is not the case. I'm at a loss. Either this motherboard does not like optical drives or there is something else wrong with the board. ASUS diagnostics comes up blank. CPU diagnostics comes up blank. SFC comes up blank. DLGDIAG for the HDD comes up blank. Virus scan comes up blank. MalwareBytes comes up blank. MalwareBytes rootkit scan comes up blank. Memtest86 comes up blank. EVERYTHING comes up blank! I can find no abnormalities. :( Keep on BOINCing... :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Or for not much more money, you can get an external USB optical drive, and only connect it up (to any computer) when you need to use it. Then it certainly won't be causing problems the rest of the time. |

My opinion? Unless there is something really special about that optical drive, I'd just replace it. Last time I bought one at Microcenter late last year, they were like $20 for a bulk (non-retail boxed) LG DVD writer. It would be a cheap test, and possibly eliminate your issue. Be sure to install a new SATA cable (you should grab one when you get the new drive while you're shopping if it doesn't come with one) just for good measure. That's what I would do in your position, as it isn't an expensive or time consuming job.

Greetings, I do believe I have this BSoD thing figured out. :) Before I rebuilt this PC I was having problems with the optical drive. It would work, then not, then it would, then not. I thought it was because I had it on the same SATA block as my 2 HDDs. I switched it to another SATA block which was powered by a different driver. I went from Intel to Marvel. That seemed to work better, but there were still issues of Windows not seeing the drive now and then. So, after the rebuild, the new motherboard only has one SATA block powered by an Intel driver. I never once thought about the optical drive until yesterday. Saturday night, 3/26, I had another BSoD. Yesterday I went to check drivers on a DVD and Windows didn't see the drive. I swapped the cable for it with a different one that runs to an expansion card. Windows then saw the drive. Last night there was another BSoD. I ran Memtest86 all night which of course found no problems... again. I booted into Windows and checked to see if Windows could see the optical drive... and it cannot. So, unless someone has any ideas why this is happening, it looks like I'm in the market for a new optical drive. The DVD that came with the drive has something on it pertaining to a firmware update. BUT! If I cannot trust the drive to work properly, what's to say that if I get it seen by Windows again and try the update, that it won't crap out in the middle and really screw me up? Besides, there is something wrong mechanical wise when trying to open the tray. It clunks a few times and quits trying to open. Try it again and sometimes it'll open then, sometimes it will require a third try. I believe I should just get a new drive. Any thoughts? :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Greetings, So, I have removed the dust from the innards of this PC. I also removed the liquid cooling system. I cleaned the goop from the CPU, pulled it, inspected the "pins" and the socket, found no abnormalities and reinstalled the CPU. I installed the OEM heat sink and fan with a dab of Arctic Silver. Upon booting, the "A new CPU has been installed" message was still there, but I assume that was because I removed the CPU and reinstalled it. I have backed off on the number of cores used to 4 in BOINC. With the OEM fan, idle is somewhat warmer and BOINC running full bore was way too hot for my comfort. With BOINC running on 4 cores the temps are high 50s and mid 60s. With the liquid cooler and running 8 cores I was seeing low to mid to high 50s as the dust accumulated. I will now reboot to see if the "new CPU" message has gone away. Oh yeah, this PC seems to boot faster since swapping the cooling systems. :) Be back in a few... Keep on BOINCing...! :) [edit]The message has gone away and this PC is fully operational in about 1 minute. I am SOOO impressed. It looks like I will be looking for a liquid cooler that has a much lighter cooler pump. We'll have to wait to see if the BSoDs have gone the way of the Dodo as well. If you wanted to share the host ID to aid in troubleshooting that would be helpful. You can leave you settings to hidden & the information is displayed anonymously. As seen here. Without knowing the host information there are some basic things that would help pinpointing your issue. What is the version of the video driver you are using? Is this host only running tasks on the GPU or is the CPU being used as well? If the host is also running CPU tasks. Is BOINC set to suspend CPU tasks when the computer is in use or only GPU tasks? Are you using any thermal monitoring software? SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours |

Greetings, Ok, this is starting to really peeve me off! :( I had another BSoD last night and this time it's back to the original when my RAM went south. This is what I got: 032116-131321-01.dmp 3/20/2016 9:13:11 PM KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR 0x0000007a fffff6fb`80000000 ffffffff`c000000e 00000002`14d77880 fffff700`00000050 ntoskrnl.exe ntoskrnl.exe+74ec0 NT Kernel & System Microsoft® Windows® Operating System Microsoft Corporation 6.1.7601.18741 (win7sp1_gdr.150202-1526) x64 ntoskrnl.exe+74ec0 C:\Windows\Minidump\032116-131321-01.dmp 8 15 7601 368,296 3/21/2016 3:08:47 AM I just love my Grub loader! :) It has 2 options to run memtest86 so I ran it over night. RAM comes up clean, no errors reported. I ran System File Checker. Nothing reported there. I ran my Western Digital HDD diagnostics in extended mode. No problems there. I ran an Intel CPU diagnostics and found nothing. I have googled this to no extent. One thing that keeps popping up, though, is that the POST tells me that "A new CPU has been installed". Not so! It is the same CPU that I got when I rebuilt this machine. I have also googled the CPU thing and found an instance on Windows Seven Forums where a guy is having the same problem. He says that he found a bent pin on the CPU and fixed that, to no avail. These new fangled CPUs do not have "pins" per se. I also found when a guy in Russia? I think says that it is caused by the CPU socket used by ASUS. His fix was to remove it and replace it with a socket from an MSI MB. Yeah right, like I have the expertise to do such a thing. :| Oh yes, I have run MalwareBytes and a root kit scanner to no avail. And my AV reports nothing. I have checked for a BIOS update and mine is current. One thing that strikes me as really odd is that these BSoDs happen just after 9PM Central time in the U.S. The BSoD a few days ago happen after the PC had an up time of just over 30 days. This one was just over 3. Because the POST keeps telling me there's a new CPU, I tend to lean in that direction for a possible solution. I just haven't a clue what to do next. Thank you for listening and if you have any ideas, no matter how far fetched, I would be all ears to hear them and most appreciative. Keep on BOINCing...! :) [edit]Upon further googling I have found other possible causes one of which IS the motherboard socket. The other is that my CPU cooler pump may be too heavy for this new board and could be causing a minor "pin" separation. I will look into this, besides, it's just about time for another dust clean out. ;) Wish me luck! :)[/edit] CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? Things you ought to keep up to date are motherboard (chipset) drivers and those are normally still found through the manufacturer of the motherboard or the chipset manufacturer. Unless I actually have an issue that a new driver version specifically addresses, I personally don't bother with updating drivers. Once I've got a system running & stable, that's it. If I get new hardware, (or new software that requires a later driver than I've got) then i'll install it's drivers & check for later ones & what issues they address. I've updated my video drivers once or twice- because i got newer hardware that required them. If it isn't broken, don't fix it IMHO. Grant Darwin NT |

Simple, you don't have to. Those drivers from 2005 and 2006 in the list, they are last versions of drivers for hardware that that version of Windows supports. Think about things still available in the BIOS, such as a floppy drive, the COM and LPT ports, USB 1.1 drivers etc. Especially for the USB ports, a USB 3.0 port supports USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 as well, so it still needs drivers for that, which haven't been updated until their last update when the switch to the newer USB happened. And as for COM ports, LPT ports, a floppy drive, these are usually still available in the BIOS, even if they are no longer available on the backside of the motherboard. There may be connectors still on the motherboard itself. Things you ought to keep up to date are motherboard (chipset) drivers and those are normally still found through the manufacturer of the motherboard or the chipset manufacturer. But even these can consist of a grouping of older drivers. Don't stare yourself blind on the dates. A lot of your Windows 7 file dates are of 2007, there may even be things way way older still used under Windows 7 (I for one have an application uninstaller with date 1998 in my C:\Windows\ folder). |

Greetings, It's a wonder that I stumbled onto this thread about a BSoD that I have had just a couple days ago. My last BSoD event was caused by my RAM going south. This event, I have no clue. I did some googling this morning and found that I could start a command prompt in admin mode and run 'driverquery.exe' which gives a list of drivers with some info such as dates. I was flabbergasted when I saw the list, to say the least. I knew about the hardware drivers that are installed when building a new system etc. and as far as I know mine are up-to-date. I have no idea what to do about this huge list: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. have seen, through doing a quick scan of the dates, a driver dating back to 2005. How is that even remotely possible? And, how do I go about doing any updating of ALL THESE drivers? Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) [edit]By the way, my BSoD was also a 'CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATION 0x000000f4' event. I looked in the event log afterwards and could find no errors at the time of the BSoD. Go figure... :|[/edit] CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS?
