This is a follow up to a previous thread: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=78526

Referencing this computer: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7830684

I definitely appreciate the help I got in the original thread. I was able to get the K6-2+ to successfully complete a work unit under Windows 7. Since then, I've ditched Windows 7 and gone with Windows 2000 SP4 (much more usable on the old system - posting from it now, in fact). I have two questions/problems.

First, I managed to get one of the remaining version 7 work units, but the progress is stuck at 0.0% even after 13+ hours of run time. I'm using the exact same app_info, executable, and dll that I did under Windows 7 (see previous thread). The elapsed time continues to run but interestingly, if I exit and restart BOINC, the time starts back at 00:00.
stderr.txt shows:
setiathome_v7 7.00 DevC++/MinGW/g++ 4.5.2
libboinc: 7.1.0

Work Unit Info:
...............
WU true angle range is : 0.107183
Optimal function choices:

I don't recall if the previous unit that processed successfully was a vlar, but I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.

Second question is if there is any way to get the version 8 app to process on the 586 architecture? I tried modifying app_info to use the version 8 app with the older dll to no avail. It outputs the following error:
<core_client_version>6.6.38</core_client_version>

Have you tried libfftw3f-3-3-4_x86.dll with the SETI@home v8 app?
I don't know if that is the same one you tried with the v7 app before using libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll. If it is then it may not work either.

The counter reverting back to 00:00 would likely be as there was no checkpoint created due to lack of progress. Do any of the files in the slot folder have a later timestamp than stderr.txt?

Cool idea, I have an old AMD Barton sitting in the closet from 2003. But my $40 kindle may outperform it @ 1.9watts ;)

Sometimes it's just fun to fire up some old stuff and see how it works.
The last time I fired up my old PIII-S 1.4GHz system I cranked out some work I compared it to my old Pentium M notebook using stock apps.
The PIII-S consumed 2.33 times as much power than the Pentium M.
The PIII-S completed work 2.52 times slower than the Pentium M.
Those tests were back with SETI@home v6 or maybe even v5.

Now I pretty much don't play with anything older than the Pentium M notebook. I've upgraded its memory and overclocked from its stock 1.5GHz to 2.37GHz. While both were running a single CPU task. I compared the run times of the old Pentium M vs my Celeron J1900 system, running 2.41GHz. I found the old Pentium M had lower task run times. However the J1900 has 4 cores & an iGPU. So it can complete much more work per day for even less power compared to the old Pentium M.

So I now have the version 7 work unit making progress! I dug out a spare hard drive, installed Windows XP, copied my data folder over, and we're up and running! It must be some Windows 2000 issue not letting things run right. Estimated time to completion: 137 hrs :).

I'll revisit the version 8 issue when the time comes that I can't get any more version 7 work.

since that machine hasn't returned enough work to have a good estimate yet it may take more or less time.
I had a Pentium III 850MHz running & I think it took about 80 hours to do an AP. I have a feeling the server may not even allow your K6 to download AP work, but it would be a good laugh to see how long it would take.

The app is hang in 'Optimal function choice' routine
Read my posts here:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=75617&postid=1571978#1571978

My words: "It happens in 30-40% at start/restart of tasks on my K6-2+ but only when it is booted in Windows 2000
When the same system runs in Windows 98 it never happens
The BOINC and SETI@home files are the same (same BOINC Program and Data directories used, same tasks continue to run)"
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=75617&postid=1575843#1575843

Second question is if there is any way to get the version 8 app to process on the 586 architecture? I tried modifying app_info to use the version 8 app with the older dll to no avail

I didn't try SETI@home v8 on that computer:
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=3412467

But looking in the Lunatics_Win32_v0.44_setup.exe (which have the stock SETI@home v8 CPU app inside)

From setiathome_8.00.aistub
<app_info>
    <app>
        <name>setiathome_v8</name>
    </app>
    <file_info>
        <name>setiathome_8.00_windows_intelx86.exe</name>
        <executable/>
    </file_info>
    <file_info>
        <name>libfftw3f-3-3-4_x86.dll</name>
        <executable/>
    </file_info>

So try yet another copy of the old DLL (libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll) renamed to:
libfftw3f-3-3-4_x86.dll

In fact I will suggest to have 3 files (all are the same file, only names different)
libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll
libfftw3f-3-3_upx.dll
libfftw3f-3-3-4_x86.dll

(in case the DLL file try to open/call itself by its original filename (I had this happen with other DLLs (it was for some game I think?)))

Completed! =)

Only about 1900 years before the K6-2+ matches what my i7/280x system has done to date!

Now, about that version 8!

BB, OT a little here, but I'd really like to know how you got your posted app_info to show on the site nested? Every time I do that it left justifies, so I'd like to know the trick to keep the formatting when I may post mine, or advise others how to do it so if they ask.

When you see something like that - no need to ask.
Just press [Quote] under the post and see the code.

Edit:
Oops - I didn't see the first sentence from msattler
