Message 1865861 - Posted: 6 May 2017, 12:32:54 UTC - in response to Message 1852618.

"HMS Belfast is one of only three remaining vessels from the bombardment fleet which supported the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. The other vessels are the destroyer USS Laffey, part of the historic ships grouped at Patriots Point, South Carolina, and the dreadnought battleship USS Texas at San Jacinto, Texas."

Be nice to visit the other 2 :-)

Another ship still afloat that was in the English channel supporting D-day is Tribal Class destroyer HMCS Haida
Well worth a visit. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g154990-d607747-r459758840-HMCS_Haida_National_Historic_Site-Hamilton_Ontario.html

Speaking of D-Day.

Swedish volunteer paratrooper Gösta Wollin was one of the very first to drop over Normandy, some minutes before it was actually D-Day.

If you drive a car in Sweden, you might get to Bodö via Silvervägen, ie from Arjeplog in Norrbotten.
Then, you pass only thirty meters from the WWII Allied base, Sepals III, that was a collaboration between the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), the Norwegian exile forces and the Swedish intelligence service (C agency).
OSS is now of course CIA:)
One of the most well-preserved WWII US bases in Sweden: Sepals II.

For more than 70 years, bombs have lain on the murky floor of the ice-cool waters of Loch Striven in Argyll.
Two of the estimated 200 bombs dropped on the loch in Argyll are to be brought back out of the water this July in time to mark the 75th anniversary of the infamous wartime mission they were built for - the ambitious Dam Busters raid of the Second World War.

A different generation

"I suppose it's a generational thing. Personally, I don't think there was anything brave about it. We were just doing a job. We didn't expect any recognition."

As we're only a few days away from 11/11.

CWGC

It's amazing what info one picks up every day, wasn't aware they had one in the US.

"Its smallest is at Ocracoke Island, off North Carolina, U.S., which is the final resting place of only four British sailors, whose bodies were recovered after their ship was sunk by a German submarine in May 1942."
