Rare black leopard spotted in Africa for first time in century: 'It's such a mythical thing An ultra-rare black leopard — with a silky-looking, shiny coat — was spotted in Africa for the first time in more than 100 years, and the wildlife photographer who captured the elusive big cat credits the sighting simply to dumb luck. |

Rare black leopard spotted in Africa for first time in century: 'It's such a mythical thing Dumb luck, well that's better than no luck at all, I saw that mentioned on the TV news, a beautiful cat, though a house cat is a lot safer. Australia Is Deadly Serious About Killing Millions of Cats Feral felines are driving the country’s native species to extinction. Now a massive culling is underway to preserve what’s left of the wild. |

PetitionI'm sorry to all the cat lovers out there, but here if it doesn't have a collar with an attached bell on it then it cops a lump of lead in the head instead.Australia Is Deadly Serious About Killing Millions of Cats I (and very many others here) value our native wildlife way over that of an introduced natural killer that they have no defence against. Cheers. |

Thank you for illustrating my point. Leaving this kind of deliberately inflamatory rhetoric aside, I think it is distressing to see so much hatred getting in the way of much more humane solutions such as Trap-Neuter-Releases or even more effective Trap-Vasectomy-Hysterectomy-releases. I agree that time is of the essence and concede that TNR and TVHR alone aren't sufficient in the short term if an aussie fauna ''entirely made up of cats and cockroaches" is to be avoided, but this man-made problem won't be solved by sophistery, shaky science and added layers of cruelty - which will only contribute to fuelling unproductive, endless downward-spiralling cycles of violence and suffering for all involved...TNR is cost-effective and a more ethical & efficient way of lowering feral cat populations. Cheers.Australia Is Deadly Serious About Killing Millions of Cats "Even scientists supporting the cull balked at the bowhunters’ methods. ... Killing cats to save endangered species was a simple — if sad — calculation in the abstract. But killing a single cat, and watching it struggle against the assault, seemed like a spectacle of human cruelty." - NYT... and distract from the real biodiversity and environmental issues : “The focus on killing cats runs the risk of distracting attention away from other threats to biodiversity, most prominent of which is widespread, ongoing habitat loss, which has been largely overlooked in the Threatened Species Strategy. The culling target is a highly visible symbol of a broader campaign around feral cat research and management in Australia, rather than a direct indicator of conservation action and success. We are concerned that progress toward the 2 million target could be misinterpreted as progress toward conserving threatened species, when the link between the two is not clear.†https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/australia-cats/Just another long-term general interest vs short-term special interests case to be added to the "Is intelligence a factor of survival ?" debate, I guess. Slightly off topic but still has cats.... There's a reason why my cat doesn't need two-factor authentication ... As they say, there is a fine balancing act between adequate security and easy user experience. My cat has it easy: he was chipped at the rescue centre when we acquired him, and now he just wanders in and out of the house via a cat-flap that unlocks only when it detects his unique code. ... |

A newly discovered species of cat has been discovered on Corsica, the Cat Fox according to CNN. Wildlife rangers from France's National Hunting and Wildlife Office have located 16 of the golden striped 'cat-foxes' in remote areas of the French island of Corsica. (CNN)There may be a fascinating new species of a fox-like cat, or a cat-like fox, prowling the island of Corsica and yep, it's already cranky and hates your guts. Savoir-Faire is everywhere!
