Ah, Prohibition, Al Capone and his band with the Tommy guns? I'd think from the 1940's through the 1950's just about everyone had seen enough blood albeit a lot of it Japanese, German and Korean so that might be a lull period.
Yes that's true. But I assume that Al Capone and his band killed competitors in their business and cops who were after them, not accidently children, women, and bystanders. I guess on today's holiday weekends in the U.S. like July 4th, there were a lot of people shooting at each other for trivial reasons (maybe drunk, drugged, ...), even though they didn't know each other the day before. This kind of violence is senseless, inexplicable. I shouldn't give advice, but one good thing I often witness in US politics is to decide things differently in different states which in Europe are controlled by the central government. One size fits all doesn't always work. I assume, that's the case for gun laws.

Don't mess with Texas pickup truck owners or you might end up like this...
SAPD: Man tracks down his stolen vehicle, shoots suspect dead
Police say two people were inside the stolen vehicle: a man in the driver's seat and a woman in the passengers seat. The owner attempted to order the suspected thieves out at gunpoint.

That’s when the suspected thief in the driver's seat shot the owner, investigators said.

According to SAPD (San Antonio Police), the owner returned fire, killing the other man and critically injuring the woman.

Certainly a case of self-defense, is what we have,” McManus said. “We would prefer that they call the police before taking that into your own hands, but he did what he felt he needed to do.

And then there's those guns that go off by themselves.

As soon as I saw this I thought "Sig Sauer". I am at a loss why any professional org. ie militaries, police, security continue to use these things. Our dopey military just replaced all its sidearms with the P320, disregarding there have been over a hundred of these "spontaneous firing incidents", so expect a few stories like this from Canada until they waste more taxpayer money replacing them.

Four people shot outside hospital in Columbus; four people detained
“We believe the suspects in the first vehicle opened their door and started shooting toward the victim’s vehicle,” Daughtry said. “Four people in the second vehicle were injured, and we believe they were struck by gunfire.”

75-year-old woman shoots at home intruders in Oakland
Officers said two armed men forced their way into a home and began searching. The elderly resident was the only one at the home when the intruders broke in.

Fearing for her safety, the 75-year-old woman pulled out her .357 Magnum and fired one round toward the suspects, police said. The suspects returned fire at the woman and fled the scene.

The police here in State of Brandenburg, Germany replaced all Soviet Makarovs with SigSauer P228 in 1990. They still use many of them today as service guns. They have been giving out HK SPF9 guns for a number of years now, but there is no replacement program. Today only HK and Walther guns are procured for German police forces, except "BKA" (table: previously issued types; currently issued ones). The German military always used service guns from Walther (P38, P1, P8). But half of the German federal states used SigSauer guns for their police forces in the past two decades. Which ones? The northern states and the Federal police. No southern German state ever procured any SigSauer police gun. Today only the Federal Criminal Office "BKA"; the German FBI still orders SigSauer guns (P229). SigSauer company is based in Eckernförde, Schleswig-Holstein (far north, near the Danish border) while Heckler&Koch (HK) is based in Oberndorf, Baden-Württemberg (deep in the southwest). Walther was founded in Zella-Mehlis, Thuringia (centuries old tradition of weapon manufacturing) but today is also based in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg. Who decides on weapon procurements for police authorities? Weapons experts, experienced police gunners? Or lobbyists and politicians?

The gun nutters in Connecticut, but millions more are.

US judge rejects challenge to Connecticut assault weapons ban.

A federal judge on Thursday rejected a gun rights group's challenge to an assault weapons ban the state of Connecticut adopted after a gunman in 2012 killed 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) filed a lawsuit in September, arguing the 2013 ban violated the right to bear arms under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment, citing a major U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that expanded gun rights.

That decision, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, was issued by the court's 6-3 conservative majority and held the Second Amendment protects a person's right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense.

The decision also announced a new test to assess the legality of gun restrictions, saying they must be "consistent with this nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation." NAGR said Connecticut's law failed to meet that standard.

But U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven in a 74-page ruling rejected those claims, saying the group failed to establish that assault weapons and large capacity magazines are commonly bought and used for self-defense.

Arterton, an appointee of former Democratic President Bill Clinton, cited "persuasive" evidence by the state that assault weapons are instead more often sought out for their militaristic characteristics and are often used in crimes and mass shootings...
