They said that in Australia.

Are you saying that the combined intelligence of the US cannot also find a way to become a normal moral society.

Good luck with the 2nd Amendment.

Yep, the right to randomly shoot people with highly efficient weapons will remain.

"Randomly shoot people"? Are you a transplant from the British Isles? I would expect that kind of comment from across the Atlantic, not from a fellow countryman.

Law abiding citizens do not randomly shoot people.

The bad guys with illegally owned guns randomly shoot people. And, suffice to say, the gun doesn't do the shooting either, the trigger person does.

Understanding that the initial post can also apply to that poster.

Why don't you understand that? Or do you deny. If so... Why?

I do understand as my many posts objecting to some of your inane statements demonstrate.

Since when is banning guns going to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and idiots that go on shooting sprees? Do you think they will "obey" the law?

This argument is illogical (sorry) because it fails to account for the ban on full automatic weapons. Restated:

"Since when is banning automatic weapons going to keep them out of the hands of criminals and idiots that go on shooting sprees? Do you think they will "obey" the law?"

Why is this not just as valid?

I see the usual rhetoric but not much throwing around any concrete ideas of what to do to fix this problem... if you want to. Of course I support the right of a free, law-abiding people to defend themselves, and this problem has nothing to do with that. Within the framework of the Constitution I see several possibilities, in increasing severity:

1) Do nothing. Everything is just fine. Doesn't affect me. It happens, get over it. Etc.

2) Reinterpretation of the second amendments "well-ordered militia" clause to actually mean something. In its current interpretation it is completely ignored ie if the second said "Being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." or even "The right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." this would make no difference to its application in practice at all. There are actually solid constitutionally sound reasons for doing this: first, the wording of the constitution was very carefully decided and its authors were not ones to waste words by having unnecessary verbiage present. The second reason is that James Madison's original wording was: "A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, being the best security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; but no person religiously scrupulous shall be compelled to bear arms." This makes it much clearer that the Second only applied to a militia.

So by doing this, one would have to be a member of the state militia in order to own/use firearms. This could enable detailed background checks, training requirements, recurring mental health assessments, and revocation of the right for reasons such as propensity to violence, threatening or harassing social media postings, failing mental health assessment, etc. And this would satisfy the "states' rights" advocates because each state could determine the qualifications to be militia members... including none at all.

3) "Strict constructionist weaponry" as I mentioned before: the Founders only knew of and used firearms that could fire one shot and then needed manual intervention. Redefine anything that fires as fast as one can pull the trigger as a weapon of offense and war, not of defense and not subject to constitutional protection (as was done with full-autos!) While no one would be expected to go back to the days of ramrods and biting the top off powder bags, bolt/lever/single/pump-action and single-shot firearms are excellent for self-defense, hunting, target shooting, utility (ie putting down wounded animals) etc.... not so good for gang warfare or shooting up schools.

4) Repeal the second amendment. As noted above, the amendment was most likely created in 1789 to enable state militias because the United States did not have a standing army at all until 1791 (the Continental Army of the Revolution had been dissolved) and it did not become significant until the War of 1812. It is constitutionally arguable that the Second is obsolete. Then, again, it becomes a "states' rights" issue and individual states can decide, and will at least have the option to restrict or not however they choose is optimal.

These are just ideas for discussion so please do. :^p

#1 - Despite the above, SCOTUS has affirmed that the 2nd Amendment is about Individual Rights.

Yes, and I think incorrectly and influenced by politics. The interpretation has also gone the other way; it did in 1876. Not likely these days but again this is only one of several possible ideas.

#2 - The Republican Party controls 2/3 of the States.

Yes, and those would be the least restrictive. This is the "Will of The People"... those who disagreed could either move elsewhere or vote in a different state government.

Worse. 70% of the American people do not want a ban on handguns.

If you re-read what I wrote, there was nothing in there about banning all handguns.

Doesn't matter what foreign countries believe. Only what is believed inside the USA.

I don't know where this little snipe comes from, but I don't think it's very civil. This is a discussion board, and I am discussing, by proposing ideas, of how to possibly resolve a problem, and nothing more. If this is somehow objectionable, I trust you will heed your own advice and refrain from commentary in the North Korea thread; after all you are a foreigner so it doesn't matter what you believe... correct? :^p

Do you have any ideas of how this problem may be resolved?

Who do want to ban?

Geez, I can't think of anything more relevant. Let's try a car analogy... I've been told that works with these difficult technical concepts.

Vision test requirements for driver's licenses are implemented during Obama era.
Auto-negation of anything that happened during that era means they are overturned by the president.
Blind driver runs down 29 people, 17 of whom die.
The president then stresses the need for vision testing... those same requirements that he already cancelled.

"TOTAL IRRELEVANCE."

Uh huh.

I was just looking for the Stats outside of the US, I found this tweet from
Jeff Greenfield, Verified account, @greenfield64
30 Years political analyst, ABC, CNN, CBS;

In the rest of the world, there have been 18 school shootings in the last twenty years. In the U.S., there have been 18 school shootings since January 1--35 days.

You want to know the truth?

Here it is: http://dailycaller.com/2018/02/15/fact-check-18-school-shootings-2018/
