Hi.

Both my Macs received the new v8.0 apps this morning.

All the tasks on the PowerPC machine are erroring immediately.

<core_client_version>6.12.35</core_client_version>

The tasks appear to be running OK on the Intel machine, but it's too early to say anything about validation.

Hi Nigel,

Best repost this information in this thread as that's where all the version 8 developers are gathering. (As long as they didn't slam the door shut behind them)

Having chatted with one of the version 8 developers, I have forwarded this thread to the developers for the Mac. Hope to hear from one of them soon.

Thanks, Jord. That's now done. I posted here originally because I thought it might get lost in the chatter on the other thread.

It may help to have it posted in two places. I do hope it doesn't get snowed under, because you posted it right after a mega post of mine. :-(

It didn't get snowed under. :)

Eric Korpela in "New app?" wrote:
I'm doing command line compiles through autoconf for the PPC version. I had two executables available, one statically linked to fftw, one dynamically linked. I thought I had picked the right one. I had even used "otools -L" to show the dynamic library list, but I apparently got the wrong one anyway. I'll fix it as soon as I can.

The other developer doesn't agree, though:
It is no longer possible to build PowerPC applications using current versions of the Mac development tools. They would have to be built with very old Mac development tools on an older Mac with a very old version of OS X.

I don't think it makes sense to offer SETI@home 8 for PowerPC Macs.

Which version of OS X are you running on that PPC?

Hi Jord.

Yes. Apparently Xcode's support for PowerPC processors stopped with version 4.0. The current version's 7.2.

My PPC machine's a G5 and runs Mac OS X 10.5.8, the last system version it can run. It's also limited to BOINC 6.12.35, of course. But it's still crunching tasks for Einstein@home, MilkyWay@home, and until yesterday, SETI@home and usually returns the results within a day or two of receiving the tasks. It's very rare for either machine's results to be marked invalid.

Whether or not it makes sense to offer SETI@home 8 for PowerPC Macs is of course a matter of perspective. :) The effort required to produce the app versus the loss of those machines to the project.

Message 1754523 - Posted: 7 Jan 2016, 9:24:11 UTC

Hello,

Just downloaded this today. I keep getting this error in the event log:

Thu Jan 7 01:18:08 2016 | SETI@home | [error] No app version found for app setiathome_v8 platform x86_64-apple-darwin ver 802 class ; discarding 03au15bd.32158.466999.12.39.237_0

I have a Mac. Why am I getting this error and how do I fix it? Also, since I am new to this, is there anything I can do to help tasks that are in process? My BOINC Manager reads "No work available to process."

I just want to make sure this is working! Thanks for your help! :)

Your task list shows you have 135 tasks in progress, all of them Seti@Home version 8, all of them downloaded today, none of them with errors. So I guess it was a patience thing. :)

Hi Jord.

My task list shows that my G5 is currently processing four 8.02 tasks without error. But in fact it's been getting the same error as Catherine's machine (except for "powerpc" in the platform name), it's downloaded an app numbered 8.01, and those four tasks were "discarded" immediately upon receipt. (A fifth task has met the same fate while I've been posting this.)

Can you do a project reset?
Then check which application Seti sends you? Please post the messages in an answer here.

I've also reset the project on the MacBook Pro (Intel), but that BOINC client's preoccupied with a couple of Einstein@home tasks at the moment and hasn't done anything other than clear the project folder:

Thanks, forwarded up the pipe. But it being 6.53am Los Angeles time, we still have to wait at least 2 hours for someone to get into the office, drink coffee, etc. Set NNT again. :)

Oh, and others are reporting ALL Macs are now seeing this.
At least it also showed a BOINC bug: discarding work without telling the server about it...

For PPCs version 8.03 is out. Do another project reset and then set Allow new tasks.

Yes. Thanks Jord. I did that about an hour and a half ago. The PPC machine received v8.03 and a task, which is about 5% processed as I write. No apparent problems so far.

My Intel machine currently has a full buffer and hasn't fetched the new SETI@home app or any tasks, but I'll report back when I have any news on that front.

Hi Guys,
I had the same issue on my Mac (intel + NVIDIA Macbook Pro) with seti@home version 8.02.

At this time, crunching process is working well with version 8.03.

Cheers,
Georges
