We've also made small changes to our science code to improve the Gaussian fitting routines. This means version 8 results are not compatible with version 7. So if you use a version of SETI@home you got from another site, or if you compile your own version, you'll need to get or build a version 8 application. I'm sure link will be made available in the Number Crunching forum.

I've started a thread in Number Crunching - for information only - where information and download links can be consolidated while the updated third-party apps dribble out.

I'm assuming that if I need the build, or if it's available to me, I'll get a notification, so I'll wait till that happens. Thanks.

Hi. Too bad Mac users still penalized for not being able to "show graphics" Thought it was to be a screen saver.

Hi. Too bad Mac users still penalized for not being able to "show graphics" Thought it was to be a screen saver.

The screen saver just slows down data processing, and gives eye candy in return.

personally myself I don't use the screen saver & many others don't also.

It's only eye candy as Steve in the post above mentions, If your using the Graphics then that's not much, but a little less power to number crunching.

Bill, the Mac CPU work units show the graphics.

Been running them for the last week or 2.

Switched over the Main and the ones here have it as well.

Not the GPU but then there aren't any GPU for anyone right now...

http://boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout/setigraphics_8.00_x86_64-apple-darwin does download the graphics application for version 8 on the Mac.

I checked your cache though, you are still running the v7.07 (avx) and v7.01 (sse3) CPU applications, which do not have the graphics. The version 8 graphics application does not work with the version 7 science applications, only with the version 8 science applications.

You can check in the BOINC data directory if you have the graphics application. If you do, it'll be used with the version 8 CPU science application.

These are very bad news anyway.

I got a Nvidia Tesla K40c just for grinding SETI.
Its working since last year.

You wont really tell me to waste 4,800 Euro for nothing????

Since 1999 i am grinding for SETI.
Now what?

Nice start for 2016....

That's a lot of negativity for someone with so much money to spend on Teslas. IMO you should sell that and get some cognitive behavioural therapy.

It is not permanent!!

Just wait a few days and the GPU app will be released.

Remember SETI@Home has never promised work 24/7.

In the meantime perhaps find another project that can use your GPU.

That's not very nice. This person has been working since 1999. There's no need to be rude even if you don't like his comment.

Well that's your opinion. He attacked me as application developer. Now I wash my hands of the entire project forever. Thankyou to those that supported my work over the years. These jerks made me realise I don;t want to help these people at all.

Jason,

I hope you do know that a lot of folks really appreciate all the untold years you have been a very big contributor in making SETI@home so successful. Without your efforts to this cause, the silent majority of us crunchers would not be anywhere as productive as we are.

This goes for a core of wonderful folks that are too many to list here but contribute a great deal to the success of this project.

Just my opinion, and I'll admit that I never get around to thanking you and the others for your time and efforts in this cause.

Jason, before you go, fork the code so that there can be a table of user numbers that will never get another work unit assigned to any of their computers. That table can be at 3rd party site so it is across all projects.

Thanks for all the hard work you do getting the dozens of variations of hardware combinations debugged and operating. I know Eric doesn't have the resources to do this alone.

My collection of Dell Win XPs have been cranking out what they can since 2001, and slowly but surely have "contributed".

But.....I freely admit I have no clue what some of you are talking about sometimes, especially when it causes me to wonder if the upgrade will cause my "antique" PCs to have a stroke. But....since being clueless doesn't seem to get in the way of helping with the data-crunching so far, I'll keep my amateur setup plugged-in, in spite of my wife's objections that my old tankers are using so much electricity!! :-)

I imagine I'll upgrade to version 8 sometime in the future....after I see something that I can understand that says it's OK to do so on Dell Win XP platform(s).

Happy New Year!!!

regards,

Well, you tellin me to get cognitive behavioural therapy, because of my loyality to SETI-Project that many years?

Because of try to supporting it with better, more useful Hardware?

Okay....

And by the way: i never attacked you in any way.

Just a suggestion: before you release a Version, which is only for CPU, so just wait a bit, until you can support the other computing components out there.
that's it. nothing more, nothing less.

I think everyone needs to take a step back and take a break..

The decision to release CPU v8 was probably made a level far above anybody here.

We have no way of know how or why. (and at this point it's mute so lets just drop it.)

All this sniping at each other isn't doing ANYONE any good.

I'm sure the volunteer developers are doing what they can, but they are just that. VOLUNTEERs and it's the holiday season (time to spend with family and friends)

Be happy that it there is work and whenever they get the chance, they will work on getting us those apps, till then everyone needs to chill.

The last thing anyone needs is constant complaints flooding the threads.

As the old saying goes "A watched cake never rises"
