Is the automotive industry no longer conducting test drives on public roads, but instead only on test tracks, controlled artificial environments, and simulations? Because it's cheaper?

Autopilot is there to help you drive- it isn't there to do it all for you.
The discussion isn't about autopilot, it is about a different software, FSD. Full Self Driving. Or vehicles that don't even have driver controls.

How fast do you have to go, to do this much damage to a tree.

Depends on the mass of the car... to name the second ingredient of kinetic energy: mass and velocity.

It seems an "Aston Martin DBX SUV" is capable to provide plenty of both.

The main North-South Freeway in California may be closed this Saturday so the military can fire live ammunition over it. The closure would impact about 80,000 travelers and likely cause a gridlock from Dana Point in the north to past Del Mar in the south.

And the type of tree.

Considering the damage to both- i'd say well over 100km/h. 130km/h easily.

Would a cybertruck[*] have gone straight through??...

Ouch!
Martin

* Note: The cybertruck would have survived. However, assuming there is no impact absorbing crumple zone, the remains of the occupants would have to be cleaned off the insides of the vehicle.

Florida man accused of going 124 mph, tells troopers he ‘had to use the bathroom’
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, at about 3 a.m. Sunday, troopers spotted a Toyota Camry and a motorcycle stopped side-by-side at a traffic light near Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers. Troopers say the pair suddenly started to accelerate before the Midpoint Bridge, and they were accused of racing across the span at extreme speeds.

The Camry was clocked at 124 mph, while the motorcycle hit more than 140 mph.

Troopers later stopped the Camry near Country Club Boulevard and Veterans Parkway in Cape Coral. Inside were a male driver, identified as David Stone, 24, and a female passenger.

When asked why he was driving so fast, Stone told troopers he “had to use the bathroom.” FHP noted he had passed several gas stations before being pulled over.

OceanGate Titan submersibles' catastrophic implosion crushed its computers into twisted mass of metal and electronics — investigators find signs of thermal damage, too
See photos embedded In linked article.

The final report from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regarding the implosion of the OceanGate Titan submersible in 2023 has now been published (h/t Scott Manley on YouTube). Earlier this week, we were surprised to see the tragic Titan submersible’s $62 SanDisk memory card found undamaged at the wreckage site. However, Docket #60 (PDF) of the final report shows that the computer equipment was far more severely damaged in the implosion. Specifically, the onboard trio of Nuvo-5000LP series fan-less PCs, for example, are almost unrecognizable in a “Large Electronic and Metal Mass.”

Cargo plane slides off runway in Hong Kong killing two airport staff.

Two Hong Kong airport staff were killed after a cargo plane landing from Dubai skidded off the runway, crashing into their patrol vehicle and pushing it into the sea, local officials said.

The Boeing 747 involved in the deadliest airport incident in the financial hub in more than 25 years also fell into the water on Monday, but all four crew members on board escaped.

The security guards were not breathing when rescued from the water, with one confirmed dead at the scene and another later in hospital, the city’s airport operator said.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, which took place around 3:50am Hong Kong time (5:50am AEST).

Flight EK9788 was operated by Turkish freight carrier ACT Airlines on behalf of Emirates, said the Dubai-based airline. In a statement it added that the crew were safe and that there had been no cargo on board.

Investigators are looking into runway conditions, the weather and the aircraft and aircrew as part of their examinations, said Steven Yiu, executive director of airport operations at Airport Authority Hong Kong.

Man Ka-chai , a safety investigator with Hong Kong's Air Accident Investigation Authority, confirmed that the air traffic control had directed the flight to land at the airport’s north runway, but had not received any messages requesting help from the pilot......

A United Airlines pilot was injured and forced to make an emergency landing after a mystery object smashed the windshield of a Boeing 737 at 36,000 feet.

A United Airlines pilot was injured and forced to make an emergency landing after a mystery object smashed the windshield of a Boeing 737 at 36,000 feet.

Photos circulating online reportedly show the pilot’s arms bleeding and bruised, with injuries consistent with glass cuts.

Broken glass also coated the dashboard and cockpit. Other photos show what appear to be scorch marks at the point of impact.

United Flight 1093 from Denver to Los Angeles had to make an emergency landing in Salt Lake City on Thursday.

Some online observers suggested that the strike might have been the result of space debris or even a meteor hitting the jet.

The Federal Aviation Administration placed the probability of space debris causing serious injury to a commercial airline passenger at one-trillion-to-one in a 2023 report.

Experts said the windshield crack could be explained by an electrical malfunction, but the scorch marks and the broken glass indicate the plane was likely hit by something.

Birds, hail, and other objects tend to collide with planes at lower altitudes.

What makes this reported incident different is that the Boeing 737 MAX 8 was at cruising altitude — far above those concerns........

Thermal damage is not really a surprise as from a kid inflating their bike tyres knows that compressing air makes it hot. The air inside OceanGate went from 1 atmosphere to somewhere north of 400 atmospheres in a small fraction of a second so would be instantly very hot. Unusually Scott didn't bring this out very clearly.

The previous catastrophic crash of ACT Airlines was a 747 cargo flight on behalf of Turkish Airlines on Jan 16 2017 in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan); the crew of four and 35 people on the ground died.

This small airline with a fleet of just four old 747 has a remarkable accident history: three hull losses in just 15 years (another A300 freighter crash landed in Bagram/Afghanistan on Mar 1 2010, damaged beyond repair).

A Diesel engine compresses air with a compression ratio typically between 16:1 and 24:1 whereby air temperature rises up to 700 to 900 °C (1300-1650F).

China recently operated large floating spy balloons above the U.S.

In Russia's war in Ukraine all kinds of novel drone tech is developed each month.... war speeding up tech evolution.

What's the maximum flight altitude of today's military drone tech? Small enough to not be detected on military radars... and small enough to just damage a 737 without destroying it.

A probability of one-million-to-one. People frequently win the lottery jackpot. But one-trillion-to-one?

The New York Times says a weather balloon is now the most likely suspect, with California-based weather balloon company, WindBorne Systems, said one of its balloons may have been involved.
