United Airlines plane clips the tail of parked Delta aircraft, shaking passengers Video embedded in article. Both aircraft had to be towed back to gates allowing passengers to disembark. Video taken from inside the United flight shows the Newark, N.J.-bound plane slowly approaching the parked aircraft around 7:20 p.m. Friday, with its wing smacking the tail of the Delta plane. |

There are times when it's a good thing you don't have any customers in your shop. Truck trailer tyre smashes through Adelaide butcher shop, leaving estimated $12k damage bill Grant Darwin NT |

Almost a dozen passengers on a flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles were injured when the aircraft’s takeoff was suddenly aborted. Nearly a dozen passengers were injured after a plane’s takeoff was aborted at the eleventh hour due to a technical issue. |

"From our initial investigation, this incident was unrelated to Unifi's operational processes, safety procedures and policies," the company said. So, how did this happen? |

Yeah..."From our initial investigation, this incident was unrelated to Unifi's operational processes, safety procedures and policies," the company said. So, how did this happen? Either they aren't sufficient to be effective (given the rarity of such incidences, not very likely), or they weren't being followed. Or there was confusion- eg they were following the requirements for an engine at idle, not for one providing thrust, or following those for a smaller engine type. Grant Darwin NT |

Interesting What about those of us who wear photocromatic specs? |

I was OK with distance vision for a long time, but eventually needed glasses for that too. And I like to wear dark glasses when necessary to eliminate glare from bright sun on wet roads - all too common in UK summers. So I had a chat with my optometrist. I asked about photocromatic, but he advised me that that the modern ones (at least his company's) are triggered by UV light - and that modern cars have UV filtering in their window glass. So photocromatic is a non-starter for that usage. On his advice, I opted for polarised glasses with the same prescription as my normal ones - and they're absolutely fine, with the extra benefit of cutting down, specifically, on reflection glare. It'll be interesting to see how plod argues that one in court. (reminds me - I must go out and wash my car windows before tomorrow's trip) |

tis more interesting. Many LCD displays are polarized, so if you wear polarized specs you may be looking at a black display. |

I don't tend to wear sunglasses indoors, where my main screens are. But you raise an interesting point. QR codes on phone screens for outdoor events? Or travel tickets? Self-service outdoor ticket machines? My local rail station has just one touchscreen ticket machine to serve both platforms - in the car park, with no shade, and facing due south. And last time I used a QR-coded ticket on my phone, they were having a ticket inspection blitz - and the inspector and I had to squat down in the shade of a handy stone wall before his device could read my device. |

My point was many vehicles now use glass displays and not steam gauges. |

My point was many vehicles now use glass displays and not steam gauges.Yes, mine does, for one. And I've been driving it this week, while wearing my polarised glasses, and the LCD touchscreen (for many car controls - from radio to satnav) has remained readable at all times. I think that my car's manufacturer has twigged that the polarisation orientation has to be compatible with the orientation chosen by the spectacle manufacturer for anti-glare. That wasn't true for a car I bought from them 20 years ago - then, the main displays were analog, but one supplementary display - showing the clock, and some warning messages - was the wrong orientation. So if it beeped, you couldn't see what was wrong. |

Another successful Darwin Award winner. Shocking footage shows moment handcuffed suspect steals cop car before fatal crash. The lesson of this story is, don't drive with handcuffs on. ;-) |
