Sad to hear, but as you say these things happen.
My mothers oldest brother was in the RAF during the war, survived only to be killed in 1964 by a RTA just outside Christchurch NZ.
My 4th sister's husband's father served in Korea during that war only to be killed in a RTA over a decade later.
I've always pre-planned journeys & any that are long ones, schedule suitable breaks.
The times I've been trolled by family, colleagues & even online for taking breaks are unbelievable.
That still P's me off today.
However, my response every time is: I'm still here breathing & in one piece.

I often wonder how many RTAs are caused by one or other party falling asleep (long or micro) and waking up (or not) to find their vehicle imbedded another vehicle or the scenery. I congratulate you on your planning, and actually taking regular breaks.

Thanks. What I consider much worse & dangerous is those who drive on another's tacho.
The times I atempted to get that fact through to people was to no avail...
...until the day came when I arrived back in the yard alone.with several loads undelivered.
Could not get this numpty to stop doing it & he often threatened me to watch my p&q's.
Arrived at drop & police were waiting.
OH HAPPY DAY. :-)
Shame I didn't have the tune on my phone.

Plane catches fire during landing at Miami International Airport

..The plane’s landing gear malfunctioned and fell off during the landing, officials said...
That's not the sort of thing that you want to hear.

Cheers.

Don't have your vehicle seized by the police in New York, it may end up under a bulldozer

Sadly another one of those flying fan thingies has fallen out of the sky. :-(

Sadly those flying egg whisks are all too often not very good at flying and end up whisking their occupants to another celestial plane.

Totaled Tesla goes up in flames three weeks after crash
Metro Fire of Sacramento said the call was their first Tesla fire, and reported no injuries as a result of the conflagration.

Crews arrived to our first Tesla fire. It was involved in an accident 3 wks ago, and was parked in a wrecking yard. Crews knocked the fire down but it kept reigniting/off-gassing in the battery compartment. Crews created a pit, placed the car inside, and filled the pit with water http://pic.twitter.com/Lz5b5770lO

Toyota Recalls Electric Car Over Faulty Wheel That May Detach
Toyota is recalling 2,700 bZ4X crossover vehicles globally for wheel bolts that could become loose, in a major setback for the Japanese automaker’s ambitions to roll out electric cars.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday the cause is still under investigation, but the whole wheel could come off, risking a crash.

“Until the remedy is available, no one should drive these vehicles,” the company said in a statement.

Among the vehicles subject to the latest recall, about 2,200 were destined for Europe, 270 for North America, 112 for Japan, and 60 for the rest of Asia, according to Toyota. They were produced between March and June.

Totally understand & agree.
However, I doubt if we will ever see "authorities" chasing down & fining "rogue" cyclists.
You know, the ones who ride on pavements or jump red lights.

'Multiple' fatalities, at least 50 injured after Amtrak train derails.

An Amtrak train has derailed after hitting a "truck that was obstructing a public crossing" in Mendon, Missouri, according to Amtrak.

There are "multiple" fatalities and more than 50 people have been injured, according to officials.

Eight passenger cars and two locomotives, which is where the engines are, derailed at about 12:42 p.m. local time, Amtrak said....

Part of the BNSF Marcline subdivision
https://www.curtlundgren.com/la_plata.jpg

IIRC Amtrak is authorized 70MPH on that track.

The crossing was so low traffic, gravel road, it only has cross bucks to mark it. The question becomes why was the truck stopped blocking the track? Unfortunately the person who can answer that expired.
I'm sure NTSB will get the event recorders and the forward facing camera. A long report will be written. They why will only be speculation.
I'll bet a couple of long repeated suggested improvements will be trotted out again.

Condolences to the families affected, wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.

These lines from the article:
The court was told Richards, who was “visibly intoxicated”, admitted he’d had two drinks earlier that day.

and
Defence agent Matthew Nicholson said his client was a team leader for a “major financial institution in Edinburgh”.

Make me think - Two drinks = A bottle of gin & a bottle of champagne, that's two drinks isn't it?

Exactly my thought. However, I was thinking Whisky & Champers.
That's DD10 on his license for the next decade & high insurance premiums, but being a banker, doubt very much he cares about the cost.
He'll find it difficult to crash a bus seat for the next 14 months. :-)
