Pakistan Airlines plane crash: At least two of the 98 on board survive as A320 plunges into crowded Karachi suburb.

A jetliner carrying 98 people crashed yesterday in a crowded neighbourhood near the airport in Pakistan's port city of Karachi after an apparent engine failure during landing.
Officials said there were two survivors from the plane but also found at least 57 bodies in the wreckage.
It was unknown how many people on the ground were hurt as the Pakistan International Airlines jet, an Airbus A320, plowed into an alley and destroyed at least five houses.
The pilot of the Pakistani International Airlines Flight 8303 was heard transmitting a mayday to the tower shortly before the crash of the Airbus A320, which was flying from Lahore to Karachi.

PIA A320 PK 8303

There is a lot of discussion about this particular accident on various aviation forums.

After about 5 days, it is fairly clear what happened, but not Why ?

It is certainly a very bizarre accident.

The approach was too high, too fast, and the landing gear was almost certainly UP when Both Engines were scraped along the runway for a few thousand metres or yards.

The engines both failed due to the damage, while the aircraft was in the circuit for a second approach.

Lol... Woman scolds mom for letting kids drive toy car without a license
“These kids are driving all over the place!” the woman complains in the footage posted on TikTok....

“They’re playing. That’s what the park is for,” the woman shooting the video responds.

light-plane crash at Yarram
The 17-year-old piloting the plane only suffered minor scratches.
The pilot's grandfather, aged in his 70s, was flown to the Alfred Hospital in a serious condition.
His injuries were sustained after he unbuckled his seatbelt and fell from the cockpit.

Interim Accident Report (PDF)
Yeah, that just boggles the mind.
That sort of behaviour by the cockpit flight crew shows that it wasn't just a one off event- it would have been going on for some time & a sign of serious work culture issues there.
If you ever need to need to fly in Pakistan, put PIA at the bottom of your list.

It certainly looks like a systemic issue :-(
What confuses me is they had the undercarriage down, then retracted it before the skid-and-go. That crew had really lost awareness of what was going on with the plane :-( (Isn't part of the pre-landing checklist "check three greens", with response "three greens"?)
There was a bit of sloppiness in some of the controller's communications, but that is no excuse for the pilot-flying not just announcing a go-around when he (should have) realised that they were too high/fast.

Pakistan International Airlines grounds 150 pilots over "bogus" licenses after deadly crash

PIA spokesman Abdullah Hafeez Khan told AFP that a government probe last year had found about 150 of its 434 pilots were carrying "either bogus or suspicious licences".

You mean they continued to let them fly for months after they knew they had fake licenses?

That's not just the odd one, that's a third of their pilots. Forgery on an industrial scale coupled with corporate greed and blindness.
The whole management structure of that company should be standing up and not only doing the Japanese "Apology of Honour", but following up with the other Japanese "act of honour".
One has to ask how many ex-PIA "pilots" with similar licences are now employed by other airlines having got a decent number hours with a national carrier, and how other airlines check the validity of an applicants licence.

One has to wonder if Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines and the rest of the third world airline have any better then PIA.
