How bad is the use of mobile phones in vehicles? Probably a lot worse than you might think.
Documentary captures young drivers using phones, taking selfies behind the wheel.
It's actually got me interested in seeing the full documentary.
"We told them we were going to put cameras in their cars and observe their behaviour, and just to act the way they normally did."
...
Five young people from diverse backgrounds agreed to be filmed. None believed they had a problem or did anything wrong.
In the documentary, all of them are seen repeatedly looking down, texting, and even taking selfies while driving.

I'm amazed there aren't more minor crashes, let alone much more serious ones, than there already are.

I have noticed my commute getting longer and longer as more and more drivers are head down and don't go when the car in front of them does. Miss a light cycle and boom, a ripple.

A semi-truck driver, who apparently made a wrong turn, drove his 18-wheeler nearly three miles down the famous beachside boardwalk that runs from Atlantic City to Ventnor City.

Dick Emery, there's a name from the past.
I'd forgotten the Vicar and all those teeth.

Traffic control on highway E18 between Stockholm and Enköping yesterday.

It is the military exercise Aurora 17 which is in progress in the county and which causes traffic congestion.

Why the news clamp down?
1) You don't have a first amendment. 2)They don't want the perp to bask? 3) General panic?

Something else to worry about

Its about time they brought in a proper punishment for serious offences like that, and I mean compulsory jail time not only for the driver but also the transport manager. Put it in the same sort of category as Drink Driving or Dangerous Driving.

Any firm that suggested anything like that to me would be looking for another driver and expecting a knock at the door.

Agreed but to add to that, make the fines to the companies that do, a stiff one.

I can't recall if I posted a link about this in the past (pretty sure I did), but a police force actually took one of the tractor units fitted with one of those devices onto a closed section of motorway for a test & was accompaned by a police chase car. The unit had cameras inside & it got to 108kph while the speedo registered much less. It also reduced the unit's braking power.

108kph might not look fast but what would the case be if it had a trailer attached with a full load?

My thoughts after seeing that film was SCARY!

Too many interlinked electronics in the modern trucks, you upset one and it can alter how others work.

In the old days when you pressed a pedal it was connected to whatever it worked not a bunch of electronics.

Seize the tractor, the trailer and the load. Let them see if they can buy insurance for that. Won't take more that a couple and it will be all over, except for individual operators. For the driver drink driving penalties.
