The big unanswered question is does the driver still have a contractor job with Google?
The real question is does his supervisor still have a job!

All for a few second of internet fame, or maybe they just don't want their children any more and want to throw them away the same way as they throw away an empty crisp bag.
In some respects I can understand the unaccompanied youngsters, but the adults are just beyond the pale.

I wouldn't blame your normal (but getting rarer by the day dumb cell phone) though I've seen many turned into brainless zombies by those so called "smart" phones.

I'll just stick to my landline with answering machine and ADSL connection. ;-)

Message 2124042 - Posted: 15 Aug 2023, 10:18:09 UTC - in response to Message 2124041.

A few years ago someone of intelligence less than that of an amoeba came up with the "bright idea" that road markings encouraged all classes of road user to behave in a more cautious manner, particularly in built-up areas. I can't recall the details, but it sounds as those involved in laying out the roads in that Rotherham estate were closely related to the aforementioned person - and sadly the ill-founded theory has been shown to be sadly lacking.
At the other extreme are the marking on a junction in Torbay: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c16e46ed25ko (I do like the comments from a number of users that this now resembled a water feature or a kiddies playground.)

Who thought no signs or road markings was a good idea.

To my eyes, that looks like a fantastic scam by the Developers to avoid costs and so enbiggen their greedy profits...

And consequences be damned...

I wonder if you might be remembering the Dutch experiment, 20 years ago:

Why no road rules rule

The cautious conclusion seemed to be "it works in Holland, with the Dutch psyche and the Dutch relationships between drivers and other drivers, between drivers and cyclists, and generally between road users and other road users."

But it didn't work in England then, and it would appear not to work in England now.

Shame there's no pictures/illustrations with that article...

We have some of those 'Dutch' ideas being implemented 'over yonder' for a central village area and the connecting roads. That should work well for the 'village street' of shops and venues.

However... An isolated housing estate with a road layout arbitrarily woven around the housing plots, with no thoughts for how that layout is to be used, is an expected recipe for disaster... That is a very different environment...

My suspicions and experience are that minimizing costs drove the decisions, rather than any useful thought, design, and consideration...

All in our overly greedy world...

It couldn't have been that airworthy, but then again it was Russian.

North America's Only Airworthy MiG-23 Crashes In Michigan.

Thankfully there were no injuries.

Cheers.

... Let's guess?...

Most of the junctions get painted into being mini-roundabouts?

With added cobbles/rumble-strips for good measure to deter speeding??...

Will there be any follow-up to follow?...

Stay safe folks!

"Very disappointing":

AI cameras catch 297 drivers in three days in Cornwall
wrote:

... It detected 590 seatbelt and 45 mobile phone offences across various roads in both Devon and Cornwall.

Last year there were 48 road deaths and 738 serious injuries on roads in the two counties...

... "The early results from our latest deployment show that there is also a problem with mobile phone use behind the wheel, which is both dangerous and illegal."...

The Darwin effect is not taking effect quickly enough?

Amazing for still no seatbelts and playing with mobiles in this day and age of years of seatbelts and years of hands-free systems...

Too many are dangerously 'unaware'?

Having just come back from the Lake District, one is forced to ask "How many of them were holiday makers" lulled into a false sense of security that they are perfectly safe because they are on holiday (as one knows one is immune from having a collision while on holiday).

1 person dies after plane crashes into building in St. Lucie County, FL
Deputies and St. Lucie County Fire District crews arrived on private property in the 20000 block of Southern Star Drive, south of Orange Avenue. They found two people in a four-seat Piper plane.

“One was transported to a local hospital and the other passed away on scene due to his injuries,” Mascara said.

He said the plane went through the roof of a large storage-type building on the property.

Expensive
Extremely so.

Looking at it, the road appears straight and level? Any very gusty storms at the time?
Otherwise, WTF happened?

Looking at some stills from the video it shows the whole rig has been dramatically rearranged, so that's a high probability, along with having to really hit the brakes at the same time.
