I reckon that this truck driver has a bit to explain (more so for the town that it happened in) as he certainly didn't give way. Two people hospitalised after bus crashes into houses at Safety Beach on Mornington Peninsula. |

Some accidents beggar belief. Approx. 2 decades ago, used to deliver to numerous drops in London. 1 of them happened to be a golf club literally a couple of 100 feet away from that school. Looking at the 1st & 3rd photos in the report, checked via Google maps to refresh memory. How in hell did that Land Rover not sustain much damage? Condolences to the families |

Some accidents beggar belief. The Telegraph says the Land Rover was travelling from the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club down Camp Road, which has a 20 mph speed limit. |

Well, looking at Google Maps, the closest I could get to what it looked like at the time I delivered to the area (2005) was Aug 2009. That very same year (2005) I hit a car in Knightsbridge at 28mph. It took out my radiator & came to a stop pretty quick. Bear in mind I was driving a 7.5 ton truck. Since 2009, the school has had numerous renovations. Looking at Aug 2022, there is a metal pedestrian railing in front of a metal gate, with 4 sections of metal fencing to the left with wood fencing from the right of the gate.. Also, the road curves to the right slightly. IMO, the only way the land rover could travel that distance after going through that metal was speed. |

Remote Driving Controversial In UK, But It’s Already Here The automotive industry is rushing towards autonomous vehicles as a futuristic ideal. They haven’t got the autonomous part sorted just yet. However, as part of this push, the technology to drive vehicles remotely via video link has become mature. |

I believe I've already mentioned this in previous posts, but it's worth mentioning again. insufficient training in public transport. As this report shows, WHY bother having signalling on railways when drivers "expect" things to go their way? Over twice the speed limit through a junction The original driver had joined the company in 2020 and was on their 22nd run on this route. A number of causal factors were also identified. The report noted: ‘The driver did not react appropriately to the junction indicator at P468 signal. Thankfully, most of my journeys by train are Peterborough - London & return, very rarely are they further North to South. :-) Edited to clarify last sentence. |

Route learning is vital - not just learning the usual, expected, route, but the many diversions that may arise even during a "normal" trip. I get the impression that some TOCs are reducing the number of trips and tests to save money and get more drivers in the cab (there's a bit of a driver shortage on some lines). I've just read the report: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/report-062023-train-overspeeding-at-spital-junction?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=govuk-notifications-topic&utm_source=8ac77fa1-6796-4524-b961-7926e553d6d6&utm_content=daily It's not a nice cosy one, but it out in some unexpected directions. While there are only four recommendations the last one is an interesting one: 4 The intent of this recommendation is to minimise the risks from falling. This has long been a gripe of mine - too little low-level luggage capacity which "encourages" people to pile their luggage on seats and tables, or put large cases and bags up on the racks; such cases are hard to get up there, even harder to get down safely in the inevitable rush to get off the train at one's stop (or to get something out of them mid journey). All this is in an effort to get as many seat in as possible, but at the risk of people being injured during the normal operation of the train, never mind incidents like this overspeed through pointwork. Route learning is vital - not just learning the usual, expected, route, "snip"Absolutely. It's been 40 years at least since I was last on the front of a train, & in that time technology has moved forward to the point that I would not know where to begin if put in front of one now. Regardless of technology, one thing that hasn't changed is crossovers/points/junctions. At Peterborough, there are 7 tracks with 1&2 being for non stop through trains, 3-5 for other passenger services, 6-7 for freight. Admitting, one can get caught out. For example, can recall one particular day on westbound Circle line heading to Baker Street when got the junction indicator to Platform 3 (Met Main through road to points North). Easily rectified, called signal box, gave train number, road corrected. It was in training & again on road training(route), when crossing at a semi controlled junction, regardless of whether or not one is a slow/fast train, crossing multiple platforms is at a set speed or lower. At Peterborough, you are only going over the points & not actually crossing tracks when on the downward straight through road via platform 1. |

Vermont flooding leaves section of train tracks suspended in mid-air “We cover a lot of disaster on @weatherchannel, but we’ve never seen this — railroad tracks suspended 100+ feet in the air after the earth beneath them washed away in Ludlow, VT,” tweeted Justin Michaels, a national correspondent with The Weather Channel. |
