That's both a scary number and a scary fraction of bridges that are in a poor state of repair. A very sad reflection on the state of the USA's infrastructure

Will be interesting to see what the investigation reveals as the causes(s).
As it failed in winter, i could well believe existing cracking was exacerbated by water in those cracks. Freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw over a few years would well and truly accelerate the propagation of any existing cracks.

A bit more about that bridge collapse in Pittsburgh.

Officials: Bridge not bad enough to close after inspection.

Obviously they were wrong and more frightening is that there are 5 other bridges around there of the same age and construction type still in use. I wonder how they rate ATM.

This has been all over various cable news stations today...
NJ road rage incident ends in horrific crash as driver loses control, veers off road and flips over

DASH CAM VIDEO

As summarized by YouTube user Racerwong.Shooterwong, who observed the incident while traveling on the same road and posted the brief dashcam footage online, “Accord and Raptor decided to road rage each other. Accord lost.”

Obviously, the yacht builders (located upstream from the bridge) did their planning well.

Surely this issue should have been known about a long time before now!

Why were they offered the construction contract, and why on earth did they accept it?

would have thought that was obvious, money. It's reported that the yacht is costing in the region of $500million.

no brainer really ;-)

Paid when it hits the water, not when it reaches the ocean. And until the owner gets it out, charge a dock fee!

This is what the Germans do to unsafe bridges. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-europe-60280834

Because the price of the yacht includes the costs of the partial dismantling & re-assembly of the bridge.

Time & time again, people in 4WDs think that just because they're in a 4WD that the laws of physics don't apply to them.

Only 32 month ban? - should have been loss for life and a spell doing community service, say 1000 hours when he is released.

Racing while drunk
A man who crashed his car into a lorry while racing with friends has been jailed for 16 months.
Declan Webster had his ex-partner and a three-year-old child in the car when the crash happened on 8 August 2020.
Only 16 months?!?! Should have been 16 years IMHO for such an incredibly dangerous act of stupidity. And the other idiots should have got 5years as a minimum, not just a few months.
