Authorities said there is no indication the vehicles were racing, but the Ford Mustang was speeding.

Investigators are looking for surveillance video and were interviewing witnesses to determine what happened moments before the vehicles collided, Hettema said.

Early estimates show the Ford’s speeds were in excess of 80 mph, he said. Speeds may have been higher at impact.

Speed limit there is 35, so over double.

I'm sure the commander at that base has some explaining to do. And every other base commander will be checking perimeter security.

In the UK, I think most - if not all - airbases have deliberately weakened sections of fencing: not weak enough to let casual trespassers wander through, but weak enough for a fully-laden fire tender to crash through without waiting for a keyholder. Usually they are in remote parts of the perimeter, far away from any sensitive equipment, so initially I was more worried that the car could crash through the gate and run into a fighter plane in one sentence.

But then I read

The driver eventually left State Route 198, smashed through a gate at the base and hit the FA-18E Super Hornet parked about 7 miles inside the base, Ashliman said.

Not much base standing orders can do about that.

Gates/Barriers were weakened at British Military Bases in the late 70's or early 80's following a couple of accidents. One on wet cobbles and the other on ice where serious injuries occurred.
To counter this a high security installations a second barrier was installed, effectively re-creating the medieval killing zone.

Edit] This system was also employed at Afsouth HQ Naples, with a US Marines manned machine guns covering the area.

Here the local Marine Annex in Yermo, has barriers in place behind the chain link fencing, at unused gates it's actually much tougher, but then sometimes the base works on vehicles like the M1 tank.

Malibu, California: Driver Escapes From Dangling SUV on Cliff, Then Gets Hit by Bus, Police Say
At 4:30 pm, Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff's Station responded to a vehicle accident on Malibu Canyon Road, 1/2 mile south of the tunnel. The male adult driver lost control of his vehicle, nearly going over the side. The driver became disoriented and exited the vehicle and was struck by a passing tour bus. Fortunately for the man, he was conscious and breathing on our arrival and was treated by the fast response of our partners at the Los Angeles County Fire Department and California Highway Patrol. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

This is another reminder of the need to drive safely through the canyons of our beautiful area and to use extreme caution at the scene of a traffic collision. The accident is being investigated by the CHP.

That "7 miles inside the base" can be misleading. NAS Lemoore is huge, with many square miles of farmland surrounding the Operations/Flightline area and separating it from the Admin/Housing area of the base. The OPS area is about 7 miles from the Main Gate, but it is accessed via roads that do NOT go through the Main Gate. It is a separately fenced and secured area.

The way local news is reporting this episode, I can't tell whether there was time to raise the Security/Crash barriers at the Ops Gates before the speeding car came through. I do know that once it got onto Ops, it was chased by both Base Security and the CHP helicopter, but the CHP helo was first on the scene when the car hit the aircraft.

That's bad news :-( I had deliveries in that region back in 2003 & had a farm to deliver to. The "road" was atrocious. However when we got to the crossing, had my crewmate drive the truck while I got out & scanned the line & did the same on our exit. Thought something would have been done about that since. Looks like I was wrong.

Got plenty of jibes afterwards but my answer shut them up. "I like breathing".

There's 3 unmanned crossing in my village , never been a accident at either of those crossings, accdents happen at the crossing by Melton station where the main road crosses the track and that has got lights and sposed to be getting barriers fitted aswell , that's inbetween the unmanned crossings , 2 of them one side of the station and 1 the other.

Modern drivers take drivers education from the school of hard knocks. It will teach you the lessons, but at a price and you do have to listen to the teacher.

Southern Railway said lorries hit the bridge roughly twice every month, causing cancellations and severe delays.
...
The situation is so serious at Tulse Hill that Network Rail has now assigned response staff to monitor the bridge on location at peak times every week.

It has also installed a large steel protection beam, the large "low bridge" banner and CCTV.
I'd think dispatching some backhoes to lower the road might be a better response.

That would mean getting out of the climate controlled cab and doing work with a tape measure. Can't get our hands dirty now can we? :) And besides there isn't any place to enter the height into the sat nav anyway!

We have a low height underpass down town here, that gets hit several times a year. The city looked into the backhoe option, but it would include lowering a water main and a storm sewer, plus changing the drainage for several blocks around. Not a small job. The railroad, of course, is not too willing to pay for any of this, the charter they got in 1857 limits their liability. The railroad has installed sacrificial barriers on each side, and that is what gets hit.
