Mine started doing this as well when I put the 1070ti in yesterday. But everything seems to run fine in spite of the warning. All three cards run the special app ok it seems. I’ve had to put the 1070ti on a riser, which is less than ideal but I didn’t feel like busting a piece of my case out last night. Lol

Nice comparison of what using non-stock apps will do for you on Macs...

Stock Mac Pro 6,1 ~ 26k RAC Looks like this computer might settle in around 30k if ran 24/7

Also, the current GPU Apps on the SETI Server were compiled with a 'Feature' that shouldn't be in a GPU App. The New versions at Beta and Crunchers Anonymous don't include that 'feature' and appear to solve the problem some were having with the ATI & nVidia Apps. I recommend anyone running the OpenCL ATI & NV Apps switch to the versions at Crunchers Anonymous. Along with a better working GPU App, you get to use a much faster CPU App. It's a shame SETI thinks they must have a 'ScreenSaver' in the CPU App, the Apps without the 'saver' are much faster.

I fixed the Pre-Fermi error on my real Mac. While swapping out the GPUs I decided to remove the bottom half of the Gigabyte GPU which contains the BackPlate. Now I can run the 1050 Ti in the bottom slot and that satisfied BOINC that none of the cards were Pre-Fermi cards. The 'New' Mac seems impossible to 'fix', too many GPUs I guess. So Far, I still can't run 4 GPUs on the real Mac, and the 'New' Mac will run up to 5 before it chokes. If you try it with 6 it will also fail to Boot. The only problem is the switch slows down the tasks quite a bit. It really slows down the 750 Ti. For now I have the 750 Ti in the machine with the 950s and 960 on the switch. I'm not too sure about this, it's much faster using 2 different machines, but it does run much cooler with the cards spread out. I'm about to get another 'New' Mac running, I might go back to two machines.

I've a little more experience with the 'BOINC Pre-Fermi Bug' which helps explain what you see with these two Macs;
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=8466835
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=8460900
Even though BOINC isn't listing those machines as having a Pre-Fermi GPU, they both have at least One GT 120 and a GTX 680, https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=6510692755
One of My machines is showing the Error with a GTX 960.

The way it is responding is the named GPU will Not run an OpenCL task and if the next task in line is an OpenCL task BOINC will NOT use the GPU until the next task in line is a CUDA task. This means while the other GPUs are working OpenCL tasks the named GPU will sit there idle until all the OpenCL tasks are finished. Only then will BOINC assign the named GPU a CUDA task. For Me that means while the 950s are running APs the 960 sits there idle.
For the Two 680 machines, it means while the 120 is running an AP the 680 sits idle for hours until the 120 Errors out on the AP, https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=8460900&state=6. Seems the 120s Always Error out on the APs after a couple of hours. Since the Server has decided the 680s run CUDA tasks much faster than the 120 runs OpenCL tasks, it is only sending CUDA MBv8 tasks to the host. That means the 120 has absolutely Nothing to run except the occasional AP...which Errors out. So, the only thing the GT 120 is doing is preventing the 680s from running OpenCL tasks, and trashing Every AP it touches.
What a waste.

I've suggested the Owner remove the GT 120s from his machines a few times, without any reply. I've given up on that.
Seems the Pre-Fermi GPUs also fail to run the Current MBv8 OpenCL App in Lion, https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=8444890&state=6. My tests show the Pre-Fermi GPUs run the Current CUDA 42 App in Lion just fine, meaning if you have a Pre-Fermi GPU in Lion you should install the CUDA Driver so the Server will send the CUDA App which does work with those GPUs in Lion. There is a list of CUDA Drivers for the Older Systems in the Driver Links.txt for the CUDA 42 package, CUDA 4.2 App. For Lion you would use Driver http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-cuda-5.5.47-driver.html, which works nicely for my GTS 250 & 8800 GT in Lion. I've also mentioned that a few times. There isn't any reason to keep running a GPU that trashes EVERY task it touches.

In other news, I'm still working at getting Sierra to work on one of my 'Other' Macs. If I ever get something that will run a Pascal 1060 working, I plan on running Two 1060s and Three 1050s on one of the Hacks. Unfortunately, I'm not having much Luck with the Bootloader needed to install Sierra. The older Bootloader works fine up to Yosemite though, and Yosemite will run the Maxwell GPUs just fine.

Message 1931618 - Posted: 23 Apr 2018, 22:16:48 UTC - in response to Message 1930984.

Hmmmm, so, you ran the App for a couple of Months on a Hackintosh and only got a single Error. That sounds like a Very good App to Me. It's a shame it's so much slower than the CUDA Special Apps.

I'm still working on the problem mentioned a while ago;
I've been in a battle with the last version of the Special App that works in OSX Yosemite and False overflows on a GTX 750 Ti. It seems a slightly older CUDA driver may have fixed it. Strange it only happens with the 750 Ti, the GTX 9 series doesn't have the problem.
After some thought I remembered this problem from a couple of Years ago when I was running the 750 Ti in Yosemite on my Real Mac. The way I remember it , it didn't stop until I Upgraded to El Capitan and started using the CUDA 8 driver. Seems there is the Same problem with the 750 Ti in Yosemite on the Hackintoshes, the older driver just slowed it down a little. The best I can determine, it only happens when using 3 or more GPUs. If you just use One or Two GPUs the 750 Ti doesn't give the Overflows. It's possible that's why the Max number of GPUs changed from 5 with Mavericks to 3 with Yosemite, but, even with just 3 GPUs the first Maxwell GPUs still give problems. The second version of Maxwell cards don't seem to have this problem.

The obvious solution would be the same as with the Real Mac a couple of Years ago, just Upgrade from Yosemite with the 7.5 driver to El Capitan with the CUDA 8 driver. Unfortunately I'm having the same problem as a number of other Hackintoshes with El Capitan. If you are lucky enough to have your USB chip work with the El Capitan USB driver, you still might Not be able to have the nVidia WebDriver load. That's where I'm at right now, I have ONE out of 3 Boards that has a Working USB in El Capitan, but the nVidia Driver refuses to load. Seems a Large number of people are having this problem with their Hackintoshes with the Newer Bootloader needed for El Capitan and above. If it works, you are one of the Lucky ones. So for now, it appears I'm stuck at Yosemite using the older Special App with the 7.5 driver. But... I DO have 4 GPUs working on my Mac/Hack. It's just that one of them isn't happy, looks as though I need One more 9 series card to replace the 750 Ti.

TBar,

Believe me, this was NO complaint... I just wanted to post the Error Report for information and study. I think the App works well.

I'm on El Capitan, 10.11.6 with the Security Update/Patch... (15G19009) I only have two 750TI SC cards; you state that three or more exhibited this problem for you... Why I'm seeing this with just two cards, then, is a puzzle.

Under Preferences ---> CUDA, my CUDA Driver is 8.0.71 and reflects the Web Driver as: "GPU Driver Version: 10.11.14 (346.03.15f12)" I don't know where else to go from here. With the true age of my Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P MOBO and Quad Core Extreme X9650 CPU being approx 9 years old, I don't want to change Hackintosh System Preferences to a "newer" 5,1 Profile... (Though, I could if I chose to...) Current System Profile is "MacPro 3,1 - Early 2008", I think it's best to keep my system at this Profile level.

Also, I can't tell from the StdErr Report which of the two GPUs exhibited the Error. The oldest of the two cards I bought from Zalster quite some time ago. Earlier this year, this GPU, (still primary and connected to my monitor via HDMI), exhibited Video Pipeline issues. I contacted EVGA for assistance and information, as I was seeing great pixelation issues if the monitor had been turned off for several hours and then turned back on. EVGA said it was normal wear and tear and the Video Pipeline was corrupting the Desktop Image(s). I asked if the card was still capable of Number Crunching, and I was told "yes" further being told that the Number Crunching/CUDA side of the card would be unaffected for awhile longer. I was told to move the card to the secondary PCIe Slot on the MOBO and move the newer 750TI SC card into the Primary PCIe Slot. I did, and the newer card is running the monitor without issue. If the older card is the one with the Error, perhaps it's just time to pull the card out altogether.

I look forward to hearing back from you. :-)

Why I'm seeing this with just two cards, then, is a puzzle....
Let's see;
Running Hacked OS on Unsupported Hardware = check
Running Graphics driver in Unsupported OS on Unsupported Hardware = check
Running OpenCL App designed for an Intel iGPU on nVidia GPU in Unsupported OS = check
The question should be, "Why is this even working?"
The fact that you are only seeing ONE error in months is basically a Miracle. Have you looked at other machines that are running Supported Apps on Supported OSes in Supported Hardware and observed how often some of them are receiving Errors? I'd suggest you keep Exactly what you are currently running, many people are having Much less success. You do understand that Apple went to great lengths to make sure exactly what you are doing Won't Work aren't you?

Right now I have TWO motherboards that will work with El Capitan, both have the exact same problem with the nVidia driver using any version of Clover I've tried so far. You can get the NV driver to load, but, both the Driver Manager AND CUDA can't detect any GPUs. Which of course means BOINC can't use the Cards. There isn't any problem with the ATI Cards though, and the NV driver works fine in Yosemite using Chimera. If you ask Apple why they don't use nVidia GPUs they will quickly tell you because their Drivers don't Work. Well, they sorta work with supported OSes on Supported Hardware, but even then there are those that say they don't quite work correctly on their Mac Pro. I think NV needs to invest a little more resources into the Platform if they ever want Apple to use them again.

So, which version of Clover are you using? What settings are you using in config.plist? I've tried a large number of the suggestions at TonyMac, none have worked so far.

My Clover is OLD!!! I haven't changed it since March of 2016 when I got 10.11.3 running. My Clover is Version 3320. I believe for the video, the config.plist has the checkbox marked for nv_drv=1 and SIP is "0x3" in RTVariables. All else is stock with the config.plist. (I ONLY view the config.plist through Clover Configurator.)

The Alternate NVIDIA Web Drivers seem to have always Updated after completing an OS Update without any hassle for me. I left the CUDA Driver alone for quite awhile, until you mentioned to me that it should be Updated. I can't remember what Version it was that I was on at the time, nor what you recommended I go to when I first Updated the OS to 10.11.4. Whatever Version it was on, it stayed until the recent Upgrade to 10.11.6 and the Security Patch Update. After successfully Updating to 15G19009, I Updated CUDA to 8.0.71.

[EDIT:]

Oh, and SMBIOS is set for "MacPro 3,1 Early 2008" with appropriate Serial # and UUID. I've had VERY LITTLE trouble with this system.

The GA-EP45-UD3P MOBO is on BIOS Ver FD from 2009. When the Mac Drive failed a couple of months ago, I had my local computer place go through the system with a fine toothed comb. The BIOS/CMOS Battery got changed, the system was stress tested, cleaned of all dust, new PSU, (per my request), new Hot Swap Bay, and finally a new SATA Hard Drive to replace the failed Mac Drive. I was QUITE LUCKY that they could Clone the system and data to the new drive and all just picked up and worked right away.

I submitted the defective drive to WD for warranty RMA replacement. They actually Upgraded me from the defective 1TB to a 2TB Drive. (I still haven't opened the anti-static bag on the new drive yet.)

Well, the Cheap Chinese Knockoff 970 arrived today, and appears to be a complete failure. From the ad it appeared to be a rejected 970 chip with severely reduced clockrates, I was hoping for maybe 950 performance. As it turned out, CUDA says it a Compute Code 2.1 card with 4 compute units. Even the old CUDA42 App wouldn't work with it though. OpenCL worked, about as well as my HD6850, but then I decided to open FireFox while it was running the OpenCL App, it crashed the system The card hasn't worked for over 5 minutes since even when using the Linux install USB stick. I think it's dead...the fans seem to work well though. Perhaps I can use the fans on another GPU, the Fake 970 appears useless though.

Fortunately, while I was waiting on the slow boat from China, I managed to get El Capitan working on two different machines and as expected the problems with the 750 Ti cards disappeared with the CUDA 8.0 driver. So, I guess I really don't need another 9 series card to replace the 750 Ti in the 4 GPU machine. The 750 Ti is working fine in that machine as well as the other machine running 3 GPUs. For me the ticket is Clover 3998. Any higher version produces USB Kernel Panics at boot on My machines and any lower versions won't load the nVidia driver. El Capitan seems to be working fine with 3998 as the bootloader on those machines.

Along the way I found the change with OpenCL in 10.11.4 gives the ATI cards a nice speedup over previous Systems. Anyone running ATI/AMD GPUs should Upgrade to at least 10.11.6 El Capitan if possible. Unfortunately the 10.11.4 update breaks nVidia OpenCL pretty badly, even the AstroPulse App is much slower after 10.11.3. I fear one more OpenCL "Upgrade" will totally break OpenCL on nVidia GPUs. I suppose it's a good thing the CUDA Special App work so well up to Sierra, hopefully once Apple gets finished screwing around with High Sierra the Special App will work there also. One can only hope ;-)

Yeah I’m
itching to add a thunderbolt external enclosure on my Mac Pro 6,1, but the special app has to work on High Sierra and above. Guess 11.14 will be out for developers next month, I’ll give that a try and see if it fixes the boinc issues I had in 11.13.x.

Have you tried the Special App with the latest version of HS? One of these point updates might fix it, it's always possible. Along with breaking new items, some times an "Update" will fix what they broke previously...some times. The best I can determine, the problem happens when 'something' doesn't stop when it's supposed to and gives the error on App shutdown. In Yosemite the problem started with the change to the zi3u Pulsefind kernel. zi3t2b works in Yosemite while zi3u & zi3v don't. zi3v works in El Capitan & Sierra while nothing works in the early HS. I also found there is an Apple "Firmware.scap" in the EFI partition on every GPT formatted drive. So, if you install HS on a separate drive, the other drives will still have the Firmware.scap from the older systems installed on that drive, as far as I can tell. I might try installing HS on it's own separate SSD soon and see how it works.

Yeah that is what has been holding me back, the utter pain it was to revert back to Sierra. I need to do just that though, install HS on a seperate drive and just plug my old one back in if the issue is still there. I always have plans to do things, the time to do them is always the issue. lol

This isn't good. I managed to get 13.3 on my Mac Pro 3,1 but BOINC can't find the GPUs. I tried BOINC 6.34, 7.86, and 7.10.2. Same problem with each one, even though the System and nVidia drive manager find the 2 NV & 1 ATI card just fine. Then I ran the THREE gigabytes of 'Updates' to get it to 13.4 without any improvement. Hmmm, 13.3 was around 5.2 GB, then to go to 13.4 took another 3 GBs. Sounds as though quite a bit was replaced. I suppose I can try the latest Combo update and see if that helps. Usually if the GPUs are listed in the Drive Manager they are found by BOINC.... I dunno.
At least the Combo is only 2.5 GBs, https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1959?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US Unfortunately it looks as though that ONE GB Security Update comes after the Combo though.

Well, looks like OpenCL’s days are numbered on MacOS. Maybe we can get some Metal 2 love eventually. I suspect we have a year or two before they remove support completely.

well, all those "removes overhead of older technology" sound good... with one single question: will be that "Metal" cross-platform? Will same API be available on Windows and Linux?

Right now the Standard is Vulkan on the other Platforms. Based on recent developments, Vulkan can run on Top of Metal in macOS, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MoltenVK. So it would appear if your SETI Apps supported Vulkan, they will also work on the newer macOSes. When are you going to support Vulkan in your SETI Apps?

BTW, is there any work being done to allow your AKv8 code to be compiled on the newer versions of GCC? Right now the newest version of Ubuntu that can compile Apps from the AKv8 folder is 15.04, and it just went EndOfLife, (similar to SOL). Now to compile Apps with 15.04 you have to change the Repository addresses to be able to install the Development packages. There are just a few Errors when trying to use Ubuntu 16.04 to compile, if those were fixed it would make compiling in Linux much easier.

Well as TBar mentioned, Vulcan can techincally run on top of Metal. I’m not sure how much work has been done making that actually work however. Metal itself is strictly MacOS/iOS however.
