I just moved over to openSUSE Leap 42.1. I installed BOINC client and manager from YAST. When I start Boinc Manager, it says "Connecting to localhost" in the bottom right of the screen, but after a few minutes it then says "Disconnected". I stopped the openSUSE firewall and tried Advanced->Select Computer->OK (without entering anything for Host name), but get the error: "The BOINC client has exited unexpectedly 3 times within the last 3 minutes. Would you like to restart again?" If I say "Yes", it goes back to Connecting to Localhost, then repeats without ever connecting. I've seen others with this problem, but never a solution. Anyone have any ideas? I've been running BOINC for over 10 years and would hate to have to quit now.

I am also having the same issue with BOINC in OpenSUSE Leap 42.1....and am hitting the same dead ends. No luck as yet - I've also tried user permissions.
I used to run BOINC after logging root into its own gui session, however LEAP no longer seems to let root run its own GUI session.

Forest T - I've managed to narrow this issue down to the GUI BOINC Manager V7.2.42(x64). BOINC can still run from the "Terminal - Super User mode" bash shell. My solution is somewhat inelegant after too many years relying on a GUI - you may find a more streamlined process elsewhere.
Start the terminal up, and issue the command 'boinc'.
If BOINC processes are running, you'll start getting status messages - and the SUSE system monitor (ksysguard) will show setiathome tasks running.
If not, start a second Terminal and use the boinccmd tool (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Boinccmd_tool) to attach back to the project (--project_attach http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ account_key). You can get your account key from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/weak_auth.php
After that, use the commands in the control operations section.
[Status messages will appear in the first window].

I guess the OpenSUSE LEAP BOINC Manager will get updated at some time....and third-party BOINC Managers might connect to the host where this one doesn't.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the delay in getting back. I've also had some luck opening Dolphin in superuser mode and clicking on /usr/bin/boinc-manager to open it as root. I then have a GUI running, but I'd prefer not to have unnecessary root processes running. You also have to remember to do it when you logon, or else you get nothing. Thanks again.
