Message 1789291 - Posted: 21 May 2016, 16:22:53 UTC - in response to Message 1789283.

Gary was right about that milk container being an "ultra-pasteurized" heat sealed product. I asked someone in the dairy section at the grocery this morning, and he said it's actually a shelf-stable product, meaning it doesn't even need to be refrigerated! The 08-06 on the label in my picture references the recommended best-by or sell-by date, and the Aug25 16 is basically the expiration date.

It tastes ok to me, but man is this weird.

Does it say 'refrigerate after opening'?
Or does it not require refrigeration even once you crack the seal?

Meow?

Here's a picture of the other side. Interestingly to me, the ingredients are just milk and D3. That heat seal process must be like canning vegetables and jams, but it's done with a plastic bottle.

And that label is going to get an overhaul soon, the print size requirement for Calories per serving is going to be much bigger according to the LA Times, among other key parts of that label, about time really.

Seems like a good idea.

I remember way back before nutrition labels, and even UPC codes! ;~)

what does a 2-bdr-igloo go for on Baffin Island?

Two fur-seals, and a case of beer if it gets cold enough....

I'm trying to think back to the first time I saw a nutrition label or bar code. I feel like the first bar code I saw was on a box of crackers or maybe bread or ice cream. I'm pretty sure it was something basic like that, but not all grocery stores had bar code readers at first, either.

Having ordered some wine from an Italian firm, a mix of red and white wines from Langhe but also from Sicily, I received also a "kitchen robot" with eight installed programs for cooking. I shall have to read the F***** manual just as any for any PC or printer.

I think you can buy it here, too, now. Not absolutely sure, but I think I've
seen it.

Edit: I just googled and found that it is available here in the USA.

Yes, that milk I bought can supposedly be left unrefrigerated for three months, and that just amazes me, but I guess I've lived a sheltered life. ;~)

If I needed to buy milk, I'd be buying it in a box, but then I'd be buying powdered milk, I just need to add water.

That's actually a very smart way to do it. I think most of us have had instant chocolate milk, but I've never tried instant regular milk.

As one who uses very little milk I tend to keep a jar of dried milk for the odd times I need some. It can take a bit of trial and error to find one that suits your taste as there is quite a range of milky flavours out there.

Thanks.

Staters sells a large box for $16.99, sorry I can't remember how many ounces it is, but it's big, it's non fat of course, plus it tastes good chilled.

I've got a can of chocolate milk substitute(Honeyville Farms), good for up to a year after being opened, unopened it will last for years, of course before drinking you have to stir the stuff prior to pouring, but it tastes great, so who cares.

I haven't tried the boxed, liquid milk, but I can tell you that dried milk
(just add water) tastes awful, imho. But I suppose one could grow used to it.

Instant chocolate milk is supposed to be added to milk, not to water. I have
seen instant hot chocolate that is added to water. That's okay but not great.

This is what I have http://shop.honeyville.com/chocolate-milk-substitute.html, I bought one can just to try the stuff, tastes just fine, this just needs to be stirred before being poured.
