The entire data center (where our servers are) had to be shut down. That crisis is now over and we're carefully bringing our servers back up. See details here.

Thank you for the updates. The best news is that no one was injured. The machines will be back when they are good and ready.

Work is available now, just not much, or very often.

If you've got further questions, I'd suggest the Number Crunching forum. This one is for project news.

I echo the sentiment that I'm glad nobody was hurt.

It would be nice to know that there is a backup of the database somewhere.

Glad no one was hurt...equipment can be repaired/replaced. Time is relative. Patients is a virtue. I'm sure things will be back up and running shortly.

^

That is some insanity! Yes, good no one hurt in the fire.

Did they have an automatic CO2 system that put out the fire? I hope you get to the root cause and all....

Ouch!

And this, children, is why we make backups and snapshots frequently and regularly!

Glad to see it was just a server and didn't spread to people.

Whoever's server that is though, they must be a bit miffed!

WOW!! I love the smell of burning electronics in the morning!

Did we all over tax the server or was there an outside influence (Men in Black ;) .)

I used to make backups of a UNIX box called ONYX in 1981-1985. I made incremental backups on a tape unit of 10 MB while the system disk was 20 MB so I had to use two tapes and the Berkeley UNIX commands "dump" and "restore". Hards disk, then called "Winchester" broke very easily.
