Really feeling violated. Someone broke into my home while I was out at lunch. Made a mess of everything searching for valuables. They did get my camera bag with a few grand worth of cameras and lenses. The rest is little stuff. Waiting fo room mate to get home. See what they took from her. They like to do that stuff during the day. I had it happen twice in a two week week period many years ago. Yes, very creepy feeling. I'm very sorry it happened to you. ![]() |

I need a voodoo doll of the traffic god .... have some frustrations to work out .... Just spent about 2 hours pushing a lawnmower around my yard, murdering fallen leaves and tall grass. Also watched my kitties playing tug-of-war with an old sock. Put my irrigation hoses away until spring, then raked all the fallen mulberry leaves onto the block patio and mulched them with the lawnmower. Still feeling energetic, I mowed about 2/3 of my back lawn (which had not been mowed since early September). Only stopped because the collection bin was full. Get the rest done next weekend, unless it rains..... Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

FAA: Think Twice about “Drone Registration†Firms November 16 – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) wants unmanned aircraft owners to know that there's no need to work with a “drone registration†company to help them file an application for a registration number. Owners should wait until additional details about the forthcoming drone registration system are announced later this month before paying anyone to do the work for them. The Task Force assigned to provide FAA Administrator Michael Huerta with recommendations on the registration process is still days away from delivering this information. But at least one company is already offering to help people register their drones for a fee. Speaking to the Task Force two weeks ago, Administrator Huerta told the group to provide guidance on a streamlined unmanned aircraft registration process that will be simple and easy to complete, and which types of UAS would need to be registered and which would not. The Task Force agreed and is working on recommendations for a system that is similar to registering any newly purchased product with its manufacturer as well as a minimum weight for unmanned aircraft that must be registered. Drone owners should visit FAA.gov for official updates on the unmanned aircraft registry. ![]() |

Has any one gotten this in their mail? I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley this past December with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I got two job offers, one from SETI to work on high performance signal processing and the other from industry. One does not simply walk away from SETI, so I had the pleasure of joining the Berkeley SETI Research Center (BSRC) team this past June. I received a warm welcome and was promptly sent to West Virginia to help install a new SETI system at the Green Bank Telescope. There was a steep learning curve, but I was fascinated by BSRC's work and couldn't wait to actually understand what was going on. As it turns out, our group is looking to expand its computing power, providing the ability to look at more star systems with habitable planets, expand the involvement of volunteers and acquire larger volumes of data; in short, broaden the search and increase our chances of intercepting a signal. Now I'm working on setting up new servers, network hardware, and signal-processing systems at Green Bank. We're hoping to get data flowing and recording soon, and make it available for the interested public. From the 19th-century idea of drawing a giant Pythagorean triangle in the Siberian tundra to signal extraterrestrials, to our current collection of servers storing and analyzing data, it is not hard to see how much progress has already been made. Funding from the Breakthrough Initiatives is spawning new projects that would not have been otherwise possible. SETI@home is planning to work with Breakthrough Listen to collect and distribute data from the Green Bank and Parkes telescopes. However, in order to sustain the whole SETI@home effort we could still use support from our devoted SETI@home contributors. Recently, I spent a day at the Bay Area Science Festival talking to kids and their adults. I was fascinated by just how stoked kids are about SETI. Some came with prepared questions and showed incredible curiosity and intelligence. The BSRC team is hoping to inspire kids to pursue science careers and I think searching for life beyond Earth is a great way to get them interested and involved. I hope you continue your support for this fascinating endeavor, and keep your eyes on the stars! Happy Holidays, Zuhra Abdurashidova for the Berkeley SETI Research Center team ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

“Major Ian Hay, back in the "War to End War," described the structure of military organizations: Regardless of T.O., all military bureaucracies consist of a Surprise Party Department, a Practical Joke Department, and a Fairy Godmother Department. The first two process most matters as the third is very small; the Fairy Godmother Department is one “elderly female GS-5 clerk usually out on sick leave. But when she is at her desk, she sometimes puts down her knitting and picks a name passing across her desk and does something nice†![]() ![]() |

So where in that organisation chart did the "Fire Breathing Dragons" reside? (My mother was a self confessed member of that group, being capable of reducing three star generals to tears (at best) without saying a word, or moving more than an eye brow. As for lesser ranks, they were....) Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

I am feeling so much better lately? I have more pep for the first time in ten years, and I can get more done in an hour now than I could in a week last month? But, why am I up? I seem to be able to go on only four or five hours sleep per night? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
