I just downloaded the latest version but I don't know whether or not it is installed. I double clicked on every icon I could find. How can I tell if it installed?

The latest version of what?

If BOINC, the latest recommended version for Windows is 7.4.42
You can find a start option in Start->All Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager.

The icon it uses looks like this:
