I'm going to be upgrading my PCs soon and I'm a little uncertain which way to go. I've been at the 'bleeding edge' a few times, but certainly not in the last 15+ years or so...anyone remember the NexGen 90?! I do! 400MHz P2s running on a Soyo 440BX, a 16 Meg Riva TNT, a pair of Diamond Voodoo 2s and a huge 19" monitor? That was me!

I currently have two PCs, both Intel Core i5 2400s, which are quite 'nippy' given they're 2nd Gen i5s and we are now at 6th Gen. I'm seriously considering getting a pair of 'bundles' (i5 6600k, Gigabyte Z170SLI board and 16 Gig DDR4), as the price I've been offered them, works out at £50 each, more than an Intel i5 4690k, Asus Z79-P with 16 Gig of DDR3. I've read so many tests on Skylake, that I'm almost blue. I know that the i5 4690k has quite a reputation for 'grunt', so is this price that I've been given too good to be true? Is there a hidden cost in going for a Skylake base? The dealer is reputable, indeed, I've dealt with them and others, for 20 years or so, so I have no real worries there. I suppose I'm having a bit of a problem in that the price differential is so, relatively small.

At the other end of the scale, I could be really 'tight' and just upgrade the i5 2400s to i5 3570ks or even 3770ks, with the 8GB R9 300 series that I'm looking at! Actually, just changing the CPUs to 3770ks, would cost between a third and a half of the i5 Skylake package.

What are your priorities for upgrading the PCs? Are you looking for more oomph? Faster crunching? Better gaming? Longevity between the next upgrade cycle?

You probably want all of those things, but if you have to prioritize them in order, what would the list look like?

I think she meant £50, each, more than the alternative option. Not that she's getting both for £50.

Because as it reads now, it's just buy X at £50 each, (which is) more than Y. Y would then be £45 each. ;-)

I think getting DDR4 for only £50 seems like a good deal. I haven't heard anything that would shy me away from Skylake yet.

i would consider the i5-2400 to be a top tier processor and therefore not in need of an upgrade

Just to confirm, the price I've been given is for a Skylake i5 6600k, Gigabyte Z170SLI and 16GB of DDR4 and only £50 more than an i5 4690k, Asus Z79-P with 16 GB of DDR3. That's £100 total for both PCs! Either I've got more 'clout' with that company as an old (as in long-standing) customer or there is a big catch. The bottom line is, in Imperial Units, £450 against £400.

recently SOLD 2x Voodoo2 12MB with SLI 4 a $100+shipping...so maybe u should also put urz @ eBAY? :D
still selling some 2x Voodoo2 8MB on eBAY...& some other vintage SB32/64... ;)

also, when I upgrade I get the FASTEST proc 4 the board...& then I think about new MBO & another computer... ;)

I looked up the numbers and they are 212.113 AUD / 100 GBP. And 954.509 AUD / 450 GBP. Nice prices.
