2 dead, 7 hospitalized after dump truck crashes into TRE train, officials say
A dump truck crashed into a passenger train in far east Fort Worth on Saturday, killing two people in the truck and sending seven people on the train to the hospital, officials said.

About 30 other people on the train were treated and released at the scene, MedStar spokesman Matt Zavadsky said.

The crash happened shortly after noon near the 12700 block of Calloway Cemetery Road, near Trinity Boulevard and North Collins Street. The dump truck was driving over the railroad crossing when a westbound Trinity Railway Express (TRE) train was passing through, DART spokesman Mark Ball said.

The truck dump truck was badly damaged in the crash and appeared to be burned. The TRE train – which runs from downtown Fort Worth to Dallas and makes several stops along the way – was damaged on its side, where several glass windows on the train were busted.

A shot from inside the descending car of the ascending car on the Cairngorm Mountain Railway.

This railway is the UK's highest railway, largest track gauge (2m) current scheduled passenger carrying railway (if one ignores the very short demonstration of Brunel's broad gauge in the Didcot railway museum), is rare in that it has both bends and a tunnel (most funicular railways have neither) and has some of the most spectacular views going as it climbs for 2km up to the Ptarmigan Restaurant near the summit of the Cairngorm. (And is a lot more comfortable than trying to battle the steady 60mph "breeze" that was blowing people off their feet on the day I went up)

Can this really be true?

East Coast Azuma trains thwarted by northern track

"The electro-diesel trains can only run on diesel, travelling much more slowly than their promised speed."

And they don't even mention the pollution...

Quite probable - They skimped on doing the "signalling comparability" tests, assuming that everything North of York was the same as "sarf of the Thames". We've seen this before with other manufacturers, and I dare say we will see it again....

The Azuma trains cause electromagnetic interference to older signals and points in the north of England.

That sentence worries me. Why is there enough electromagnetic interference from a new train to affect other devices. https://www.conformance.co.uk/adirectives/doku.php?id=emc
If it is affecting the signalling system one has to ask what else it could it interfere with?
Possibly equipment with no link to the railways.

You couldn't make it up. "The new trains are being assembled at Hitachi's plant in Newton Aycliffe in County Durham."

Which is, er, north of York. Will the brand-new trains have to be dragged to York by a Thunderbird, before they can be powered up?

Talking of thunderbirds, I was taken to London last month behind an EWS class 90, instead of the usual LNER class 91 (actually, in front of it - they operate in 'push' mode on the 'up' run). Maybe the rest of Virgin's fleet were still in the paint shop?

They have an on-board diesel engine for use on non-electrified lines, so they should be able to chug south until they can put the pantograph up and then zoom along at full chat.

You're lucky, last time I had a Thunderbird on the ECML it was a Class 67.

Sounds like some of the issues plaguing QR (Queensland Rail) New Generation rollout.

They went for the cheapest bidder, naturally.
And when they put some of the new trains in to service they found issues with the door & braking control, driver's sightlines & air-conditioning (and several other dozen minor issues).
Public transport has been required to be equally accessible for those with disabilities as for those without since 1993, the current standards were set in 2002. Unfortunately the toilets for the disabled are too small to meet the legal requirements for access, and apparently some of those in wheel chairs can't even get to the toilets as the corridor space from the disabled seating area to the toilets is too narrow for some wheel chairs to pass through.

Although the best example of the right hand and left hand not having a clue about the other was when a new line was brought in to service. Having a new line requires more trains, and they require more staff to operate. Unfortunately, they didn't employ or train up any more drivers, so they didn't have enough staff to run the extra services.

On 21 October (2016) a substantial interruption of service occurred involving the cancellation without notice of 167 services (12% of the scheduled services for the day) due to compulsory rest periods required for the train crew.
On 25 December 2016 another substantial service cancellation event occurred due to a lack of available traincrew to operate the services. On that day 261 services, or 36% of scheduled services did not operate. The underlying reason for the cancellations was a lack of available drivers to operate services.

We had one of those too, in May this year.

On the other side of the Pennines, the electrification of the line from Manchester to Preston via Bolton wasn't complete on time. But they brought in the new electric timetable (new trains, more trains, faster trains, shorter headway) anyway - and didn't have enough standby diesel trains and diesel-trained drivers to operate the schedule. They're still running to an emergency timetable today. [As I type, teletext is showing "Cancellations on Northern between Bolton and Preston due to shortage of train crew."]

Germany rolls out world’s first hydrogen powered train.

Hydrogen trains are equipped with fuel cells that produce electricity through a combination of hydrogen and oxygen, a process that leaves steam and water as the only emissions.

Excess energy is stored in ion lithium batteries on board the train. The Coradia iLint trains can run for around 1000 kilometres on a single tank of hydrogen, similar to the range of diesel trains.
Cheers.

West to East the trip from California to New York can take as little as 4+ hours if the Jetstream is blowing hard. This distance is just less than 3000 miles or about 5000 kilometers for youse commies.

OK you have seen this sort of picture before from me.

This is the Chesterton IN railcam on Riley's Railhouse and this the the Capitol Ltd Amtrak 29 yesterday

However yesterday was a little different, this is my picture from the lounge car

I took the picture from here

And this was the front one of the P42's that carried me to Chicago. Up close at Chicago Union Station

Today I move on again, wonder if you can guess where and what train.

Will be interesting to see the result of this investigation.
The deliberate derailment of the driverless locomotive with seven wagons near the wharf area avoided a crash through a city intersection.
When it came to a halt, part of the train crashed through a steel fence, injuring two pedestrians who were treated for minor injuries.
Transport safety investigators are being flown in from interstate to try to piece together exactly what happened.

TasRail lost control of the train near Railton, about 20 kilometres out of Devonport, but the company said it was unsure how the incident occurred.
TasRail said the train was being operated using on-site remote control technology.

Tasmania's train derailment clean up begins, mayor grateful no lives lost.
